Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton

On 17 Mar 1328 Robert the Bruce signed the Treaty of Edinburgh-Northampton bringing to an end the First Scottish War of Independence. The English Parliament signed at Northampton on 03 May 1328. The terms of the Treaty included:
Scotland to pay England £100,000 sterling,
The Kingdom of Scotland as fully independent,
Robert the Bruce, and his heirs and successors, as the rightful rulers of Scotland, and
The border between Scotland and England as that recognised under the reign of Alexander III (1249–1286).
The Treaty lasted four years only being regarded by the English nobility as humiliating; the work of Edward's mother Isabella Capet Queen Consort England and Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March rather than King Edward}. Two years afterKing Edward commenced his personal reign he commenced the Second War of Scottish Independence commenced in Aug 1332.

Battle of Northampton

On 10 Jul 1460 the Yorkist army led by the future Edward IV King England and including Richard "Kingmaker" Neville 16th Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury, George Neville Archbishop York, William Neville 1st Earl Kent, Edmund Grey 1st Earl Kent, Edward Brooke 6th Baron Cobham and John Scrope 5th Baron Scrope Bolton defeated the Lancastrian army at the Battle of Northampton. Henry VI King England, II King France was captured. Humphrey Stafford 1st Duke Buckingham, John Talbot 2nd Earl Shrewsbury, 2nd Earl Waterford, Thomas Percy 1st Baron Egremont and John Beaumont 1st Viscount Beaumont were killed. Thomas Tresham fought. William Beaumont 2nd Viscount Beaumont and William Norreys were knighted. Thomas "Bastard of Exeter" Holland was executed following the battle. .

On Oct 1509 Richard Empson convicted at Northampton.

On 18 Jul 1553 Thomas Tresham proclaimed as queen Mary Tudor I Queen England and Ireland and accompanied her to London at Northampton.

After 1751. Monument to Mary Churchill 2nd Duchess Montagu in St Edmund's Church. Sculpted by Louis-François Roubiliac 1702-1762. Erected by her Daughter, Lady Mary Montagu. The monument is adorned with figures representing the three fates of Clotho, Atropos and Lachesis, arranged to show the cutting of Mary’s life thread, and Lachesis’ dismay at it being cut short. Three putti also figure on the monument, one of whom holds the spindle from which the thread was cut.

After 1775. Monument to Mary Montagu Duchess Montagu in St Edmund's Church. Sculpted by Peter Mathias Van Gelder. Mary’s monument is more decorative that her parent’s, and is Rococo in style. The composition of the monument centres around an ornate funerary urn, which stands upon a pedestal containing an inscription to Mary. To the right sits a grief stricken woman, inconsolable over the loss of an aristocrat considered a great benefactor to the poor and needy. In her left arm she cradles a baby, and a second, tearful child sits at her feet. To the right of the woman is that of an older woman draped in a shawl, who gently caresses the hand of the first babe. To the left of the urn, an angel comforts the mourners, pointing to heaven.
