Battle of Pinkie Cleugh
On 10 Sep 1547 an English army commanded by Edward Seymour 1st Duke Somerset 1500-1552 (47) defeated a Scottish army commanded by James Hamilton 1st Duke Châtellerault 1516-1575 (31) and Archibald Douglas 6th Earl Angus 1489-1557 (58) at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh at Musselburgh. The English army included John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland 1504-1553 (43), Francis Talbot 5th Earl Shrewsbury, 5th Earl Waterford 1500-1560 (47) and Thomas Wentworth 2nd Baron Wentworth 1525-1584. John Thynne 1515-1580 (32) and Edmund Brydges 2nd Baron Chandos -1573 were knighted.
William Cecil 1st Baron Burghley 1520-1598 (26) accompanied Edward Seymour 1st Duke Somerset 1500-1552 (47).
John Forbes 6th Lord Forbes 1475-1547 (82) was killed
John Thynne 1515-1580 (32) was knighted after the battle.
The Scottish army included John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland 1525-1567 (22) who commanded the Rearguard and Gilbert Kennedy 3rd Earl Cassilis 1515-1558 (32). John Stewart -1547, Robert Douglas 1505-1547 (41), Malcolm Fleming 3rd Lord Fleming 1494-1547 (53), John Livingston -1547, Thomas Hamilton of Priestfield -1547 and Hugh Montgomerie -1547 were killed. John Hay 4th Lord Hay -1556 was captured but soon released.
Trial and Execution of Thomas Seymour
On 16 Jan 1549 Thomas Seymour (40), the King's uncle, was caught trying to break in to the King's apartments at Hampton Court Palace_Richmond_Surrey. He entered the privy garden and awoke one of the King's pet spaniels. In response to the dog's barking, he shot and killed it. He was arrested and taken to the Tower of London, Tower Hill, City of London.
After 16 Jan 1549 William Sharington 1495-1553 (54) was arrested and charged with coining base money, clipping, and other frauds. He confessed and was attainted forfeiting his landed estates and being ejected from his seat in Parliament.
On 18 Jan 1549 agents were sent to interrogate co-conspirators including Elizabeth Tudor 1492-1495. The regency council was sure of her complicity with Thomas, and sought to bully an easy confession from her. She was interrogated for weeks.
On 22 Feb 1549 Thomas Seymour 1st Baron Seymour Sudeley 1508-1549 (40) was charged with thirty-three charges of treason; found guilty.
On 20 Mar 1549 Thomas Seymour 1st Baron Seymour Sudeley 1508-1549 (40) was beheaded at Tower Hill. . He was buried at St Peter ad Vincula Church, Tower of London, Tower Hill, City of London.
In Jul 1549 Kett's Rebellion was a revolt in Norwich, Norfolk in response to the enclosure of land. The revolt was suppressed by Thomas Tresham -1559 who received £272, 19. 6 for his services.
On 19 Jul 1549 Edmund Sheffield 1st Baron Sheffield 1521-1549 (27) was killed at Cathedral Close, Norwich Cathedral during Kett's Rebellion.
