Biography of Elizabeth Grimes Countess Coventry 1670-1724

Around 1670 Elizabeth Grimes Countess Coventry was born to Richard Grimes.

In 1687 John Coventry 4th Baron Coventry (age 33) died. His uncle [her future husband] Thomas Coventry 1st Earl Coventry (age 58) succeeded 5th Baron Coventry.

On 16 Jul 1695 Thomas Coventry 1st Earl Coventry (age 66) and Elizabeth Grimes Countess Coventry (age 25) were married. The difference in their ages was 41 years.

Monument in St Mary the Virgin Church, Elmley [Map]. The Monument was commissioned by his second wife (age 29) but rejected by his son. She was, apparently, somewhat imaginative in describing her provenance to the point that the second Earl (age 37), son of the first Earl's first wife, refused to have the monument erected over his father's remains.

High quality. Monument including a white marble figure elbow reclining on a deep chest in front of a lengthy inscription and under an arch crowned with armorial bearings. Large sub-figures flank the chest and the armorial bearings. Earl's coronet. Signed by William Stanton (age 60). Powdered Wig. Heeled Shoes. Buckled Shoes.

Thomas Coventry 2nd Earl Coventry: Around 1662 he was born to Thomas Coventry 1st Earl Coventry and Winifred Edgecumbe. In 1691 Thomas Coventry 2nd Earl Coventry and Anne Somerset Countess Coventry were married. She the daughter of Henry Somerset 1st Duke Beaufort and Mary Capell Duchess Beaufort. He the son of Thomas Coventry 1st Earl Coventry and Winifred Edgecumbe. In Aug 1710 Thomas Coventry 2nd Earl Coventry died. His son Thomas Coventry 3rd Earl Coventry succeeded 3rd Earl Coventry, 7th Baron Coventry.

Anne Somerset Countess Coventry: On 22 Jul 1673 she was born to Henry Somerset 1st Duke Beaufort and Mary Capell Duchess Beaufort. On 14 Feb 1763 Anne Somerset Countess Coventry died at Snitterfield.

Mary Glanville: she was born to John Glanville. In 1636 Colonel Piers Edgecumbe and she were married at St Dunstan's in the West, Fleet Street.

On 25 Jun 1715 [her former step-son] Gilbert Coventry 4th Earl Coventry (age 47) and Anne Master Countess Coventry (age 23) were married. She by marriage Countess Coventry. The difference in their ages was 23 years. He the son of Thomas Coventry 1st Earl Coventry and Winifred Edgecumbe.

On 27 Oct 1719 [her former step-son] Gilbert Coventry 4th Earl Coventry (age 51) died. His half second cousin once removed William Coventry 5th Earl Coventry (age 43) succeeded 5th Earl Coventry. Baron Coventry extinct.
