On 06 Feb 1499 Ralph Neville 3rd Earl of Westmoreland (age 43) died at Hornby Castle [Map]. His grandson [his father] Ralph Neville 4th Earl of Westmoreland succeeded 4th Earl of Westmoreland three weeks before his first birthday.

Before Dec 1512 [his father] Ralph Neville 4th Earl of Westmoreland (age 14) and [his mother] Katherine Stafford Countess of Westmoreland (age 13) were married. She by marriage Countess of Westmoreland. She the daughter of Edward Stafford 3rd Duke of Buckingham (age 34) and Eleanor Percy Duchess Buckingham. They were fourth cousins. After 27 Jun 1549 [his former wife] Anne Manners Countess of Westmoreland (age 22) died. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Staindrop [Map].

Diary of Edward VI. 16 Feb 1551. Whalley1 was examined for perswading divers nobles of the realme to make the duke of Somerset protectour at the next parleament, and stode to the denial, th'[his former brother-in-law] erl of Rutlande (age 24) affirming it manifestly.

Note 1. Richard Whalley, esquire, of Screaton, co. Nottingham, receiver of Yorkshire. "Feb. xvj. This daie th'erle of Rutlande (age 24) reported unto the counsaill certain ill practices and evil wordes used by mr. Whalley verie seditiouse and of greate importe; whereunto Whalley made deniall. But upon the debateing of the matter betweene them face to face, it appeared that mr. Whalley was culpable, for the whiche he was committed to the Fleete [Map]. Th'erle of Westmorelande (age 26) and baron Hilton were comaunded to repaire into their countreys for the more strength thereof in all events." — "Feb. xviij. Sir Frauncis Leeke was this daie called before the counsaill tooching the witnessing of the matter betweene th'erle of Rutland (age 24) and mr. Whalley, and examined upon ij . questions: First, wheather he reported to mr. Whalley a comunicacion of the lorde admyrall unto th'erle of Rutlande, in a question Wheather th'erle was a Somerset or a Warwicke, or a Lyncolneshire or Nottinghamshire. And the seconde, wheather th'erle of Rutlande, imediatelye after his taike with Whalley, reaported to mr. Leeke that he misliked much Whalley's talk. To the first he utterly denyeth that ther was any such comunicacion tooching my lord admirall. And to the ijde he saithe that, at th'erle's house, the earle asked him of Whalley whan he sawe him, who tolde him he sawe him of late att his house Marie, saith th'erle, he hathe beene here with me, and pratled very muche whiche I like not." — "April ij. Mr. Whalley bounden in M1. li. by recognisaunoe t'appeare from daie to daie, and t'abide suche order as the lordes shall awards. And thereupon discharged out of the Fleete." (Council Book.) He was sent to the Tower among Somerset's friends in the following October.

Around 1552 Henry Neville 5th Earl of Westmoreland (age 27) was appointed Privy Council.

The xxiij day of Aprell, the wyche was sant Jorge day, the Kyng('s) grace, behyng at Westmynster at ys plase, dyd where ys robes of the garter, and the yong yerle of Warwyke beyryng of the kynges sword afor hym thrugh the halle unto the chapell; and ys grase dyd offer, and the resyduw .... evyngsong, and w ... Kynges grace dyd chuysse in the sted of the [earl [Note. Duke!] of Som]ersett the yerle of Westmorland (age 27), and sir Andrew [Dudley,] (age 45) captayne of Gynes, was chosen of the garter the ...

Note. Election of the earl of Westmerland of the garter. In the privy council 10 May 1552. A warrante to the Exchequer to paye unto sir Gilberte Dethicke (age 42) knighte, alias Garter principall kinge at armes, beinge presently to be sente by the kinges majestie to the earle of Westemerlande with the order of the Garter, the some of twentye poundes.

"A comissyon for the said sir Gylberte Dethicke to take upe v. poste horses for himselfe, his servantes, and guide." (MS. Harl. 352, f. 228 b.)

A warrante to sir John Williames to pay unto sir Gilberte Dethicke knight, alias Garter principall kinge at armes, the some of xxj. poundes for schucheones by him sett upp in an°. 4° et 5° of the kinges [and queenes] majesties raigne at Grenewich, at the feaste of the order of the Garter, accordinge to a bill therof included in the same letter." On 01 Oct 1553 Queen Mary I of England and Ireland (age 37) was crowned I Queen of England and Ireland at Westminster Abbey [Map].

John Gage (age 73) bore the queen's train. Edward Dymoke (age 45) attended as the Queen's Champion. James Blount 6th Baron Mountjoy (age 20) and Henry Parker 12th Baron Marshal 11th Baron Morley (age 20) were created Knight of the Bath. Thomas Hastings (age 38) and John Leigh (age 51) were knighted. Thomas Howard 3rd Duke of Norfolk (age 80) and Henry Neville 5th Earl of Westmoreland (age 28) attended.

Henry Machyn's Diary. 05 Oct 1553. The v day of October the Qwuen('s) (age 37) grace rod unto Westmynster chyrche, and ther her grace hard masse of the Holy-gost, and ther wher ij bysshopes; on delevered her the shepter and odur thyng. Her grace rod in her parlement robes, and all the trumpeters blohyng a-for them all; and so, after her grace had hard masse, they whent to the Parlement howsse all to-geyther, and the yerle of Devonshyre (age 26) bare the sworde, and the yerle of Westmorland (age 28) bare the cape of mayntenans.

In or before 1554 Henry Neville 6th and 4th Baron Bergavenny (age 24) and [his former sister-in-law] Frances Manners Baroness Bergavenny (age 23) were married. She by marriage Baroness Bergavenny. She the daughter of Thomas Manners 1st Earl of Rutland and Eleanor Paston Countess Rutland. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 14 May 1555 [his mother] Katherine Stafford Countess of Westmoreland (age 56) died at Holywell, the house of her son-in-law the earl of Rutland (age 28), in the parish of Shoreditch.

Scarborough Castle Rebellion

On 28 Apr 1557 Henry Neville 5th Earl of Westmoreland (age 32) retook Scarborough Castle [Map] and captured the rebels.

On 24 Apr 1549 Ralph Neville 4th Earl of Westmoreland died. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Staindrop. His son Henry Neville 5th Earl of Westmoreland succeeded 5th Earl of Westmoreland. She by marriage Countess of Westmoreland. After 27 Jun 1549 Anne Manners Countess of Westmoreland died. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Staindrop.

Jane Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland: Around 1518 she was born to Roger Cholmley and Catherine Constable. After Jun 1549 Henry Neville 5th Earl of Westmoreland and she were married. She by marriage Countess of Westmoreland. He would later marry her older sister Margaret Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland; an example of Married to Two Siblings. He the son of Ralph Neville 4th Earl of Westmoreland and Katherine Stafford Countess of Westmoreland. In 1558 Jane Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland died. In or after 1558 Henry Neville 5th Earl of Westmoreland and Margaret Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland were married. She by marriage Countess of Westmoreland. She the older sister of his first wife Jane Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland; an example of Married to Two Siblings. He the son of Ralph Neville 4th Earl of Westmoreland and Katherine Stafford Countess of Westmoreland.

On 02 Apr 1570 [his former wife] Margaret Cholmley Countess of Westmoreland (age 62) died.
