Biography of Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover 1724-1792

In or before 1716 William Lygon and [his mother] Margaret Cocks Countess Hardwicke were married.

On 16 May 1719 [his father] Philip Yorke 1st Earl of Hardwicke (age 28) and [his mother] Margaret Cocks Countess Hardwicke were married.

On 24 Jun 1724 Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover was born to Philip Yorke 1st Earl of Hardwicke (age 33) and Margaret Cocks Countess Hardwicke.

On 25 Apr 1741 Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover (age 16) was commissioned Ensign of the 2nd Regiment of Foot Guards.

On 25 Apr 1743 Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover (age 18) was promoted Lieutenant of the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards.

Battle of Fontenoy

On 11 May 1745 the allied army commanded by William Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Cumberland (age 24) was defeated by a French army at the Battle of Fontenay.

George Cholmondeley (age 20), George Keppel 3rd Earl Albermarle (age 21), Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover (age 20) and John Waldegrave 3rd Earl Waldegrave (age 27) fought.

Henry Ponsonby (age 60), James Dillon and Robert Douglas were killed.

George Sackville aka Germain 1st Viscount Sackville (age 29) led the charge of the Duke of Cumberland's infantry leading his regiment so deep into the French lines that when he was wounded and captured he was taken to the tent of Louis XV.

Louis 6th Duke of Gramont (age 55) was killed. His son Antoine 7th Duke Gramont (age 23) succeeded 7th Duke Gramont.

Around 1747 Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover (age 22) was appointed Aide-de-Camp to William Augustus Hanover 1st Duke Cumberland (age 25).

On 01 Nov 1749 Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover (age 25) was appointed Aide-de-Camp to King George II of Great Britain and Ireland (age 66).

In 1754 [his father] Philip Yorke 1st Earl of Hardwicke (age 63) was created 1st Earl Hardwicke, 1st Viscount Royston. [his mother] Margaret Cocks Countess Hardwicke by marriage Countess Hardwicke.

On 18 Mar 1755 Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover (age 30) was appointed Colonel of the 9th Regiment of Foot Guards.

In 1761 [his mother] Margaret Cocks Countess Hardwicke died.

On 06 Mar 1764 [his father] Philip Yorke 1st Earl of Hardwicke (age 73) died. His son [his brother] Philip Yorke 2nd Earl of Hardwicke (age 43) succeeded 2nd Earl Hardwicke, 2nd Viscount Royston. Jemima Campbell 2nd Marchioness Grey (age 40) by marriage Countess Hardwicke.

In 1777 Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover (age 52) was appointed General.

In 1783 Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover (age 58) and Christiana Charlotte Margaret Henrik (age 62) were married. He the son of Philip Yorke 1st Earl of Hardwicke and Margaret Cocks Countess Hardwicke.

The King has been pleased to grant the Dignity of a Baron of the Kingdom of Great Britain to the Right Honourable Sir Joseph Yorke (age 64), Knight of the Bath, and General of His Majesty's Forces, and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten, by the Name, Stile and Title of Lord Dover, Baron of the Town and Port of Dover, in the County of Kent.

The King has also been pleased to grant the Dignity of a Baron of the Kingdom of Great Britain to the Right Honourable Sir James Harris (age 42), Knight of the Bath, His Majesty's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the States General of the United Provinces, and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten, by the Name, Stile and Title of Lord Malmesbury, Baron of Malmesbury, in the County of Wilts.

The King has been pleased to appoint Charles Whitworth (age 36), Esq; to be His Majesty's Envoy Extradinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Court of Petersburgh.

The King has also been pleased to appoint Robert Liston, Esq; to be His Majesty's Envoy Extraordinary to the Court of Stockholm.

The King has also been pleased to appoint Daniel Hailes, Esq; to be His Majesty's Envoy Extraordinary to the Court of Warsaw.

The King has been pleased to approve of Thomas Gavino, Esq; to be Consul for the States General of the United Provinces at Gibraltar.

On 02 Dec 1792 Joseph Yorke 1st Baron Dover (age 68) died without issue. Baron Dover extinct. He was buried at St Andrew's Church, Wimpole [Map].
