Biography of Martha Spencer 1659-1726

Before 1659 [her father] Richard Spencer (age 54) and [her mother] Martha Briggs were married.

In 1659 Martha Spencer was born to Richard Spencer (age 54) and Martha Briggs.

On 10 Oct 1668 [her father] Richard Spencer (age 63) died.

On or after 10 Oct 1668 [her step-father] John Stonhouse 2nd Baronet (age 29) and [her mother] Martha Briggs were married. The license was dated 10 Oct 1668.

Evelyn's Diary. 27 Nov 1679. I went to see [her step-father] Sir John Stonehouse (age 40), with whom I was treating a marriage between my son (age 59) and his daughter-in-law (age 20) [Note. Means step-daughter. Martha Spencer (age 20) was the daughter of [her mother] Martha Briggs who re-married John Stonhouse 2nd Baronet (age 40) after her first husband [her father] Richard Spencer died in 1668].

Evelyn's Diary. 30 Dec 1679. I went to meet [her step-father] Sir John Stonehouse (age 40), and give him a particular of the settlement on my son (age 59), who now made his addresses to the young lady (age 20) his daughter-in-law [Note. Step-daughter], daughter of [her mother] Lady Stonehouse.

Evelyn's Diary. 19 Feb 1680. The writings for the settling jointure and other contracts of marriage of my son (age 59) were finished and sealed. The lady (age 21) was to bring £5,000, in consideration of a settlement of £500 a year present maintenance, which was likewise to be her jointure, and £500 a year after mine and my [her future mother-in-law] wife's (age 45) decease. But, with God's blessing, it will be at the least £1,000 a year more in a few years. I pray God make him worthy of it, and a comfort to his excellent mother (age 45), who deserves much from him!

Evelyn's Diary. 21 Feb 1680. Shrove-Tuesday. My [her future husband] son (age 25) was married to Mrs. Martha Spencer (age 21), daughter to my [her mother] Lady Stonehouse by a former gentleman, at St. Andrew's [Map], Holborn, by our Vicar, borrowing the church of Dr. Stillingfleet (age 44), Dean of St. Paul's, the present incumbent. We afterward dined at a house in Holborn; and, after the solemnity and dancing was done, they were bedded at [her step-father] Sir John Stonehouse's (age 41) lodgings in Bow Street, Convent Garden.

On 24 Feb 1680 John The Younger Evelyn (age 25) and Martha Spencer (age 21) were married. He the son of John Evelyn (age 59) and Mary Browne (age 45).

Evelyn's Diary. 16 Mar 1680. To London, to receive £3,000 of my daughter-in-law's (age 21) portion, which was paid in gold.

On 01 Mar 1682 [her son] John Evelyn 1st Baronet was born to [her husband] John The Younger Evelyn (age 27) and Martha Spencer (age 23) at Sayes Court, Deptford [Map]. He was baptised on 02 Mar 1682.

On 14 Mar 1685 [her sister-in-law] Mary Evelyn (age 20) died of smallpox.

Before 27 Aug 1685 Unknown Tippett and [her sister-in-law] Elizabeth Evelyn (age 17) were married. She the daughter of John Evelyn (age 64) and Mary Browne (age 50).

On 27 Aug 1685 [her sister-in-law] Elizabeth Evelyn (age 17) died of smallpox.

On or before 27 Apr 1693 William Draper and [her sister-in-law] Susannah Evelyn (age 24) were married in St Ethedreda's Chapel Ely House by Archbishop Thomas Tenison (age 56). She the daughter of John Evelyn (age 72) and Mary Browne (age 58).

In 1699 [her husband] John The Younger Evelyn (age 43) died.

On 18 Sep 1705 [her son] John Evelyn 1st Baronet (age 23) and [her daughter-in-law] Anne Boscawen Lady Evelyn (age 30) were married. They had six sons and three daughters.

On 06 Aug 1713 [her son] John Evelyn 1st Baronet (age 31) was created 1st Baronet Evelyn of Wotton in Surrey. [her daughter-in-law] Anne Boscawen Lady Evelyn (age 38) by marriage Lady Evelyn of Wotton in Surrey.

In 1726 Martha Spencer (age 67) died.
