On 04 May 1312 King Edward II of England (28) and Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall 1284-1312 (28) were at Newcastle on Tyne Castle where they barely escaped a force led by Thomas Plantagenet 2nd Earl of Leicester 2nd Earl Lancaster 5th Earl Salisbury 4th Earl Lincoln 1278-1322 (34), Henry Percy 1st Baron Percy 1273-1314 (39) and Robert Clifford 1st Baron Clifford 1274-1314 (38). Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall 1284-1312 (28) escaped to Scarborough, King Edward II of England (28) to York.

Grant for life to Thomas Witham (42), from Michaelmas last, for his good service to the king and his father Richard, late duke of York, of 20l. yearly from the fee farm of the town of Scardeburgh and the manor of Walgrave and from 60 acres of land and the issues of the town.

On 25 Jun 1665 Admiral John Lawson 1615-1665 (50) died in Scarborough from wounds received at the Battle of Lowestoft. He was buried at St Dunstan's in the East Parish.
On 03 Dec 1830 Frederick Leighton Painter 1830-1896 was born to Dr Frederic Septimus Leighton 1799-1892 (31) at Scarborough.
On 07 Sep 1887 Edith Sitwell Poet 1887-1964 was born to George Reresby Sitwell 4th Baronet Sitwell 1860-1943 (27) and Ida Emily Augusta Denison Lady Sitwell 1868-1937 (19) in Scarborough.

On 16 Dec 1914 the German Navy bombarded Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby. Around 137 were killed, around 600 injured.

On 01 Dec 1871 George Philip Cecil Arthur Stanhope 7th Earl Chesterfield 1831-1871 (40) died of typhoid unmarried. George Philip Stanhope 8th Earl Chesterfield 1822-1883 (49) succeeded 8th Earl Chesterfield, 8th Baron Stanhope of Shelford in Nottinghamshire. He had been staying at Londesborough Lodge Scarborough with the Prince of Wales (30) who also contracted typhoid but survived.
