On 28 Oct 1613 George St Paul Baronet St Paul 1562-1613 (51) died. He was buried at St Lawrence's Church Snarford. Monument to George St Paul Baronet St Paul 1562-1613 (51) and Frances Wray Countess Warwick -1634. Elizabethan Recumbent. A base supporting the reclining figures of the deceased with composite Pillars supporting an entablature and armorial termination. In the base is a central semi-circular niche containing a carving of the deceased's daughter, flanked by niches containing mourning putti. Above on the lower step is a figure of Frances in full mourning dress with formal Ruff and hat, reclining on a cushion holding a prayer book. On the upper step he reclines in plate armour with a sword. The figures are contained in a semi-circular headed Recess with roses in the archivolt and on the back wall is an inscribed rectangular panel with scrolls and memento mori. The Pillars to either side support a frieze and entablature from which rise flaming urns and at the angles, and at the centre is a raised achievement of arms flanked by scrolled shields and obelisks. Possibly sculpted by Cornelius Cure Sculptor -1607.

On 03 Sep 1634 Edward Coke Lord Chief Justice 1552-1634 (82) died. Monument in Church of St Mary the Virgin Tittleshall. Simple sarcophagus on pedestal with lying effigy. Pair of flanking Tuscan columns supporting a full entablature with putti on frieze and broken segmental pediment. Carved and painted achievement in and above tympanum flanked by four reclining figures of the Virtues on pediment extrados.

Above. Quarterly of eight: Coke, Crispin, Folkard, Sparham, Nerford, Yarmouth, Knightley and Pawe. The crest is broken. Farrer says it was: On a chapeau Azure, turned up Ermine, an ostrich Argent, holding in its mouth a horseshoe Or. The motto reads Prudens qui Patiens.

The effigy was carved by John Hargrave, the rest of the memorial was made by Nicholas Stone Sculptor 1587-1647 (47).

Below the effigy are three shields. Left Coke implaling Paston. His first wife Bridget Paston -1598. Middle Coke. Right Coke impaling Cecil; his second wife Elizabeth Cecil Countess Berkshire 1596-1672 (38).

John Evelyn's Diary 15 February 1649. 15 Feb 1649. I went to see the collection of one Trean, a rich merchant, who had some good pictures, especially a rare perspective of Stenwyck; from thence, to other virtuosos.

The painter, La Neve has an Andromeda, but I think it a copy after Vandyke (49) from Titian, for the original is in France. Webb, at the Exchange, has some rare things in miniature, of Breughel's, also Putti, in twelve squares, that were plundered from Sir James Palmer (64).

At Du Bois, we saw two tables of Putti, that were gotten, I know not how, out of the Castle of St. Angelo, by old Petit, thought to be Titian's; he had some good heads of Palma, and one of Stenwyck. Bellcar showed us an excellent copy of his Majesty's Sleeping Venus and the Satyr, with other figures; for now they had plundered, sold, and dispersed a world of rare paintings of the King's, and his loyal subjects. After all, Sir William Ducy showed me some excellent things in miniature, and in oil of Holbein's; Sir Thomas More's head, and a whole-length figure of Edward VI., which were certainly his Majesty's; also a picture of Queen Elizabeth; the Lady Isabella Thynne (25); a rare painting of Rothenhamer, being a Susanna; and a Magdalen, of Quintin, the blacksmith; also a Henry VIII., of Holbein; and Francis I., rare indeed, but of whose hand I know not.

John Evelyn's Diary 07 September 1649. 07 Sep 1649. Went with my wife (14) and dear Cousin to St. Germains, and kissed the Queen-Mother's (39) hand; dined with my Lord Keeper and Lord Hatton (44). Divers of the great men of France came to see the King (19). The next day, came the Prince of Condé (27). Returning to Paris, we went to see the President Maison's palace, built castle-wise, of a milk-white fine freestone; the house not vast, but well contrived, especially the staircase, and the ornaments of Putti, about it. It is environed in a dry moat, the offices under ground, the gardens very excellent with extraordinary long walks, set with elms, and a noble prospect toward the forest, and on the Seine toward Paris. Take it altogether, the meadows, walks, river, forest, corn-ground, and vineyards, I hardly saw anything in Italy to exceed it. The iron gates are very magnificent. He has pulled down a whole village to make room for his pleasure about it.

John Evelyn's Diary 21 June 1650. 21 Jun 1650. I went to see the Samaritan, or pump, at the end of the Pont Neuf, which, though to appearance promising no great matter, is, besides the machine, furnished with innumerable rarities both of art and nature; especially the costly grotto, where are the fairest corals, growing out of the very rock, that I have seen; also great pieces of crystals, amethysts, gold in the mine, and other metals and marcasites, with two great conchas, which the owner told us cost him 200 crowns at Amsterdam. He showed us many landscapes and prospects, very rarely painted in miniature, some with the pen and crayon; divers antiquities and relievos of Rome; above all, that of the inside of the amphitheater of Titus, incomparably drawn by Monsieur St. Clere himself; two boys and three skeletons, molded by Fiamingo; a book of statues, with the pen made for Henry IV., rarely executed, and by which one may discover many errors in the taille-douce of Perrier, who has added divers conceits of his own that are not in the originals. He has likewise an infinite collection of taille-douces, richly bound in morocco.

He led us into a stately chamber furnished to have entertained a prince, with pictures of the greatest masters, especially a Venus of Perino del Vaga; the Putti carved in the chimney-piece by the Fleming; the vases of porcelain, and many designed by Raphael; some paintings of Poussin, and Fioravanti; antiques in brass; the looking-glass and stands rarely carved. In a word, all was great, choice, and magnificent, and not to be passed by as I had often done, without the least suspicion that there were such rare things to be seen in that place. At a future visit, he showed a new grotto and a bathing place, hewn through the battlements of the arches of Pont Neuf into a wide vault at the intercolumniation, so that the coaches and horses thundered over our heads.

Around 1663 Peter Lely Painter 1618-1680 (44). Portrait of Eleanor Needham Baroness Byron 1627-1664 (36) depicted as Saint Catherine of Alexandria in a guise probably intended to flatter Charles II's Queen, Catherine of Braganza (24). Accordingly she carries the martyr's palm branch and leans upon a wheel. The sitter looks to two putti in the upper left, one of whom holds a wreath of bay leaves above her head. She is wearing a copper-red dress with a richly decorated blue mantle about her arms.

On 31 Mar 1682 John Freschville 1st Baron Frescheville 1607-1682 (74) died. The last of the male line of Freschville. He was buried in Church of St John the Baptist Staveley where his third wife Anna Charlotte De Vic -1717 commissioned a monument. Sarcophagus with seated putti.

After 19 Jan 1686. Church of St Michael and All Angels Edenham. Monument to Richard Bertie 1635-1686. Large swagged and scrolled cartouche surmounted by an urn and cornucupia and bearing two scrolled inscription panels, a shield of arms with palms supported by two putti.[Source: BLB].

After 1713. St Andrew's Church Denton. Monument to Richard Welby -1713. Sculpted by Thomas Green of Camberwell 1659-1730. The fully wigged standing life sized figure of the deceased stands in an arched surround flanked by fluted Pilasters with acanthus scrolls and broken segmental pediment contaning a cherub and putti leaning down from heaven holding a metal coronet, surmounted by an achievement. Beneath is he inscription panel and to either side putti holding memento mori, and mourning, one with tears.

Monument to Robert Bertie 1st Duke Ancaster and Kesteven 1660-1723 sculpted by Peter Scheemakers 1691-1781 and Henry Cheere 1st Baronet 1703-1781. A Classical Period with Corinthian Capitals supporting open dentilated pediment with garland, urns and putti. Before the Aedicule a rounded Pedestal supports a marble image of the deceased attired as a Roman General.

After 01 Jan 1741. Church of St Michael and All Angels Edenham. Monument to Peregrine Bertie 2nd Duke Ancaster and Kesteven 1686-1741. Flat Obelisk before which stands life sized carving of the deceased leaning on an Urn, in Roman dress, a putto holding a medallion of the Duchess Jane Brownlow Duchess Ancaster and Kesteven -1736. Sculpted by Louis Francois Roubiliac Sculptor 1702-1762.

On 14 May 1751 Mary Churchill Duchess Montagu 1689-1751 (61) died. Monument in St Edmund's Church Warkton. Sculpted by Louis Francois Roubiliac Sculptor 1702-1762 (48). Erected by her Daughter, Lady Mary Montagu. The monument is adorned with figures representing the three fates of Clotho, Atropos and Lachesis, arranged to show the cutting of Mary's life thread, and Lachesis' dismay at it being cut short. Three putti also figure on the monument, one of whom holds the spindle from which the thread was cut.

On 10 Jul 1759 Catherine Blount Freeman 1737-1759 (22) died of a malignant fever. She was buried at St Andrew's Church Wimpole. Armorial Yorke differencede with a crescent to indicate son of the current holder; her husband Charles Yorke 1722-1770 (36) with an inescutcheon of Freeman Arms quartered with unknown arms two lions passant guardant with a bordure engrailed.

Stylised sarcophagus in white veined marble, bearing a white inscription panel; above is an urn in brown marble against a grey background standing on a base of three steps around which are grouped three putti: two garlanding the urn while the third stands by in dejection with reversed torch; in front of the steps is a portrait medallion and at the base of the sarcophagus is an achievement of arms; signed 'JAMES STUART (46), INVT. PR. SCHEEMAKERS (68), SCULP. MDCCLXI'.

On 25 Jun 1766 Elizabeth Lygon 1742-1766 (24) died of consumption. She was buried at St Andrew's Church Wimpole. White marble inscription scroll flanked by putti beneath a shaped cornice enriched with torches and an urn, and with apron framing a cartouche of arms

On 17 Sep 1766 Lieutenant-General Bennett Noel 1715-1766 (51) died. He was buried at the Church of St Peter and St Paul Exton. After 07 Apr 1784 Elizabeth Adams 1715-1784 (69) was buried with her husband.

Monument sculpted by Joseph Nollekens 1737-1823 (29). A reclining female figure with a cornucopia, on a sarcophagus backed by an obelisk with medallions and putti.

On 02 Jun 1800 Jane Dutton 1753-1800 (46) died at Bath. Monument in Church of St Mary the Virgin Tittleshall sculpted by Joseph Nollekens 1737-1823 (62). Flat obelisk background. Pedestal with inscription and supporting the carving which is centred around a broken column with standing figure of woman leaning on it in front of opened book. Angel on cloud above and putto below holding up a flaming heart.
