Biography of Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey 1630-1701

Around 1624 John Ramsay 1st Earl Holderness (age 44) and [his mother] Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness (age 19) were married. She by marriage Countess Holderness. The difference in their ages was 25 years. She the daughter of [his grandfather] William Cockayne (age 63) and [his grandmother] Mary Morris Countess Dover (age 59).

On 18th April 1627 [his father] Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey (age 19) and [his mother] Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness (age 22) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] William Cockayne and [his grandmother] Mary Morris Countess Dover (age 62). He the son of [his grandfather] Robert Bertie 1st Earl Lindsey (age 44) and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Montagu Countess Lindsey.

On 8th November 1630 Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey was born to [his father] Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey (age 22) and [his mother] Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness (age 25).

In July 1641 [his mother] Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness (age 36) died.

Around 1648 [his father] Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey (age 40) and [his step-mother] Bridget Wray Countess Lindsey (age 21) were married. She by marriage Countess Lindsey. She the daughter of Edward Wray and Elizabeth Norreys 3rd Baroness Norreys Rycote. He the son of [his grandfather] Robert Bertie 1st Earl Lindsey and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Montagu Countess Lindsey. They were second cousins.

In 1651 [his brother-in-law] Thomas Osborne 1st Duke Leeds (age 18) and [his sister] Bridget Bertie Duchess Leeds (age 22) were married. She the daughter of [his father] Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey (age 43) and [his mother] Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness.

In 1654 Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 23) and Mary Massingberd were married. He the son of Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey (age 46) and Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness.

On 6th July 1655 [his brother-in-law] Baptist Noel 3rd Viscount Campden (age 44) and [his sister] Elizabeth Bertie Viscountess Campden (age 15) were married. She by marriage Viscountess Campden. They were second cousin twice removed.

In 1657 [his step-mother] Bridget Wray Countess Lindsey (age 30) died. Her son [his half-brother] James (age 3) succeeded 5th Baron Norreys of Rycote.

Around 1658 [his wife] Mary Massingberd died.

Before 1660 Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 29) and Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey (age 27) were married. He the son of Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey (age 51) and Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness.

On 20th October 1660 [his son] Robert Bertie 1st Duke Ancaster and Kesteven was born to Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 29) and [his wife] Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey (age 28). He married (1) 30th July 1678 Mary Wynn, daughter of Richard Wynn 4th Baronet and Sarah Myddelton, and had issue (2) 1689 Albinia Farington Duchess Ancaster and Kesteven and had issue.

In 1661 [his father] Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey (age 53) was appointed 463rd Knight of the Garter by King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland (age 30).

Around 1663 [his son] Peregrine Bertie was born to Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 32) and [his wife] Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey (age 30).

Around 1664 [his son] Philip Bertie was born to Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 33) and [his wife] Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey (age 31). He married 1711 Elizabeth Brabazon, daughter of William Brabazon 3rd Earl Meath and Elizabeth Lennard 3rd Countess Meath.

Around 1666 [his son] Norris Bertie was born to Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 35) and [his wife] Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey (age 33).

On 25th July 1666 [his father] Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey (age 58) died. His son Robert (age 35) succeeded 3rd Earl Lindsey, 16th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. [his wife] Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey (age 33) by marriage Countess Lindsey.

Before 4th December 1667 Francis Lee 4th Baronet (age 28) and [his future wife] Elizabeth Pope Countess Lindsey were married. She by marriage Lady Lee of Quarrendon in Buckinghamshire. She the daughter of Thomas Pope 2nd Earl Downe and Lucy Dutton Countess Downe. He the son of Francis Henry Lee 2nd Baronet and Anne St John Countess Rochester (age 53). They were half fifth cousin once removed.

Around 1668 [his son] Albemarle Bertie was born to Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 37) and [his wife] Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey (age 35).

In 1669 [his wife] Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey (age 36) died.

On 1st February 1672 [his half-brother] James Bertie 1st Earl of Abingdon (age 18) and [his sister-in-law] Eleanor Lee Countess Abingdon were married at Adderbury, Banbury. She by marriage Baroness Norreys of Rycote. He the son of [his father] Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey and [his step-mother] Bridget Wray Countess Lindsey. They were fifth cousin once removed.

After 1678 [his brother-in-law] Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon (age 45) and [his half-sister] Mary Bertie Countess Carnarvon (age 23) were married. She by marriage Countess Carnarvon. On 30th November 1682 [his half-brother] James Bertie 1st Earl of Abingdon (age 29) was created 1st Earl Abingdon. [his sister-in-law] Eleanor Lee Countess Abingdon by marriage Countess Abingdon.

In 1683 [his sister] Elizabeth Bertie Viscountess Campden (age 43) died.

In 1684 [his son-in-law] Thomas Savage 3rd Earl Rivers (age 56) and [his daughter] Arabella Bertie Countess Rivers were married. She by marriage Countess Rivers. She the daughter of Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 53) and [his former wife] Mary Massingberd. He the son of John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers and Catherine Parker. They were fifth cousins.

In 1689 [his son] Robert Bertie 1st Duke Ancaster and Kesteven (age 28) and [his daughter-in-law] Albinia Farington Duchess Ancaster and Kesteven were married. He the son of Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 58) and [his former wife] Elizabeth Wharton Countess Lindsey.

On 27th August 1691 [his son] Norris Bertie (age 25) died.

On 22nd May 1699 [his half-brother] James Bertie 1st Earl of Abingdon (age 45) died. His son [his nephew] Montagu (age 26) succeeded 2nd Earl Abingdon, 6th Baron Norreys of Rycote.

Around 1700 Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 69) and Elizabeth Pope Countess Lindsey were married. She by marriage Countess Lindsey. She the daughter of Thomas Pope 2nd Earl Downe and Lucy Dutton Countess Downe. He the son of Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey and Martha Cockayne Countess Holderness.

On 9th May 1701 Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 70) died. His son Robert (age 40) succeeded 4th Earl Lindsey, 17th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. [his daughter-in-law] Albinia Farington Duchess Ancaster and Kesteven by marriage Countess Lindsey.

In 1719 [his former wife] Elizabeth Pope Countess Lindsey died.

[his daughter] Arabella Bertie Countess Rivers was born to Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey and Mary Massingberd. She married 1684 her fifth cousin Thomas Savage 3rd Earl Rivers, son of John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers and Catherine Parker.
