Paternal Family Tree: Carey

Maternal Family Tree: Rachel Jones 1680

On 14th April 1653 [his father] Henry Carey 4th Viscount Falkland (age 19) and [his mother] Rachel Hungerford Viscountess Falkland (age 18) were married at Black Bourton, Bampton. She by marriage Viscountess Falkland.

On 16th February 1656 Anthony Carey 5th Viscount Falkland was born to Henry Carey 4th Viscount Falkland (age 22) and Rachel Hungerford Viscountess Falkland (age 21) at Farleigh Hungerford Castle [Map].

On 2nd April 1663 [his father] Henry Carey 4th Viscount Falkland (age 29) died. He was buried at St Michael & All Angels Church, Great Tew [Map]. His son Anthony (age 7) succeeded 5th Viscount Falkland.

In 1664 [his step-father] James Hayes (age 27) and [his mother] Rachel Hungerford Viscountess Falkland (age 29) were married.

In 1669 Thomas Otway (age 16) entered Christ Church College, Oxford University where he first learned to love books througth his aquaintence with Anthony Carey 5th Viscount Falkland (age 12).

John Evelyn's Diary. 17th June 1683. I dined at the Earl of Sunderland's (age 41) with the Earls of Bath (age 54), Castlehaven (age 66), Lords Viscount Falconberg (age 56), Falkland (age 27), Bishop of London, the Grand Master of Malta, brother to the Duke de Vendôme (a young wild spark), and Mr. Dryden (age 51), the poet. After evening prayer, I walked in the park with my Lord Clarendon, where we fell into discourse of the Bishop of Salisbury (Dr. Seth Ward), his subtlety, etc. Dr. Durell, late Dean of Windsor, being dead, Dr. Turner, one of the Duke's chaplains was made dean.

John Evelyn's Diary. 25th July 1684. I din'd at Lord Falkland's (age 28), Treasurer of the Navy, where after dinner we had rare musiq, there being, amongst others, Sign Pietro Reggio, and Sigr John Battist, both famous, one for his voice, the other for playing on ye harpsicord, few if any in Europe exceeding him. There was also a Frenchman who sung an admirable basse.

John Evelyn's Diary. 7th March 1685. At London she tooke this fatal disease, and the occasion of her being there was this; my Lord Viscount Falkland's (age 29) [his future wife] Lady having ben our neighbour (as he was Treasurer of the Navy), she tooke so greate an affection to my daughter, that when they went back in the autumn to the Citty, nothing would satisfie their incessant importunity but letting her accompany my Lady, and staying sometime with her; it was with ye greatest reluctance I complied. Whilst she was there, my Lord being musical, when I saw my Lady would not part with her till Christmas, I was not unwilling she should improve the opportunity of learning of Signr Pietro, who had an admirable way both of composure and teaching. It was the end of February before I could prevail with my Lady to part with her; but my Lord going into Oxfordshire to stand for Knight of the Shire there, she express'd her wish to come home, being tir'd of ye vain and empty conversation of the towne, ye theatres, the court, and trifling visites wch consum'd so much precious time, and made her sometimes misse of that regular course of piety that gave her ye greatest satisfaction. She was weary of this life, and I think went not thrice to Court all this time, except when her mother or I carried her. She did not affect shewing herselfe, she knew ye Court well, and pass'd one summer in it at Windsor with Lady Tuke one of the Queene's women of the bed chamber (a most virtuous relation of hers); she was not fond of that glittering scene, now become abominably licentious, though there was a designe of Lady Rochester (age 39) and Lady Clarendon to have made her a maid of honour to the Queene as soon as there was a vacancy. But this she did not set her heart upon, nor in deede on any thing so much as the service of God, a quiet and regular life, and how she might improve herselfe in the most necessary accomplishments, and to wch she was ariv'd at so greate a measure. This is y° little history and imperfect character of my deare child, whose piety, virtue, and incomparable endowments deserve a Monument more durable than brasse and marble. Precious is the memorial of the just.

In 1693 Anthony Carey 5th Viscount Falkland (age 36) was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty.

In March 1694 Anthony Carey 5th Viscount Falkland (age 38) was imprisoned on charges of peculation at Tower of London [Map].

Before 24th May 1694 Anthony Carey 5th Viscount Falkland (age 38) and Rebecca Lytton Viscountess Falkland were married. She by marriage Viscountess Falkland.

On 24th May 1694 Anthony Carey 5th Viscount Falkland (age 38) died of smallpox. He was buried at Westminster Abbey [Map]. His second cousin Lucius (age 6) succeeded 6th Viscount Falkland.

John Evelyn's Diary. 30th May 1694. Lord Falkland (deceased), grandson to the learned [his grandfather] Lord Falkland, Secretary of State to King Charles I., and slain in his service, died now of the smallpox. He was a pretty, brisk, understanding, industrious young gentleman; had formerly been faulty, but now much reclaimed; had also the good luck to [his former wife] marry a very great fortune, besides being entitled to a vast sum, his share of the Spanish wreck, taken up at the expense of divers adventurers. From a Scotch Viscount he was made an English Baron, designed Ambassador for Holland; had been Treasurer of the Navy, and advancing extremely in the new Court. All now gone in a moment, and I think the title is extinct. I know not whether the estate devolves to my cousin Carew. It was at my Lord Falkland's, whose lady importuned us to let our daughter be with her some time, so that that dear child took the same infection, which cost her valuable life.

In 1709 [his former wife] Rebecca Lytton Viscountess Falkland died.

[his daughter] Mila Inge Carey was born to Anthony Carey 5th Viscount Falkland.
