The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy

The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. Originally penned in Latin by the monk William of Jumièges shortly before 1060 and later expanded at the behest of William the Conqueror, the work chronicles the deeds, politics, battles, and leadership of the Norman dukes, especially William’s own claim to the English throne. In 1316 [his grandfather] Simon Montagu 1st Baron Montagu (age 66) died. His son [his father] William (age 41) succeeded 2nd Baron Montagu. [his mother] Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu (age 41) by marriage Baroness Montagu.

On 18th October 1319 [his father] William Montagu 2nd Baron Montagu (age 44) died at Gascony [Map]. His son [his brother] William (age 18) succeeded 3rd Baron Montagu.

Around 1320 [his brother] William Montagu 1st Earl Salisbury (age 19) and [his sister-in-law] Catherine Grandison Countess of Salisbury (age 16) were married. She by marriage Baroness Montagu.

Before 8th June 1322 Thomas Furnival 1st Baron Furnivall (age 62) and [his mother] Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu (age 47) were married. She by marriage Baroness Furnivall.

In 1333 [his brother] Bishop Simon Montagu was appointed Bishop of Worcester.

In 1337 [his brother] Bishop Simon Montagu was appointed Bishop of Ely.

Before 29th August 1338 Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu and Alice Plantagenet (age 14) were married. She the daughter of Thomas of Brotherton 1st Earl Norfolk (deceased) and Alice Hales Countess Norfolk.

She a great granddaughter of King Edward I of England. She married before 1361 Walter Ufford, son of Robert Ufford 1st Earl Suffolk and Margaret Norwich Countess Suffolk.

In 1345 [his brother] Bishop Simon Montagu died.

In August 1345 [his mother] Elizabeth Montfort Baroness Furnivall Baroness Montagu (age 70) died. She was buried at Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford [Map].

Battle of Crécy

On 26th August 1346 the army of King Edward III of England (age 33) defeated the French army at the Battle of Crécy. The English army was commanded by King Edward III of England, his son Edward "Black Prince" (age 16), Thomas Beauchamp 11th Earl Warwick (age 33), William Bohun 1st Earl of Northampton (age 36) and John Beauchamp 1st Baron Beauchamp Warwick (age 30).

Louis Chatillon II Count Blois I Count Chatillon was killed. His son Louis succeeded III Count Blois.

On 20th November 1348 Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu was created 1st Baron Montagu by writ of summons.

On 2nd February 1349 [his daughter] Joan Montagu Countess Suffolk was born to Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu and [his wife] Alice Plantagenet (age 25). She a great granddaughter of King Edward I of England. She married before 12th June 1376 William Ufford 2nd Earl Suffolk, son of Robert Ufford 1st Earl Suffolk and Margaret Norwich Countess Suffolk, and had issue.

On 11th June 1349 [his brother] William Montagu 1st Earl Salisbury (age 48) died. His son [his nephew] William (age 20) succeeded 2nd Earl Salisbury, 4th Baron Montagu. Joan "Fair Maid of Kent" Princess Wales (age 20) by marriage Countess Salisbury.

After 1352 Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu and Joan Unknown were married.

Before 30th January 1352 [his wife] Alice Plantagenet (age 28) died at Bungay, Suffolk. She had been assaulted by her husband Edward Montagu 1st Baron Montagu for which he was indicted.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness.
