Biography of Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford 1721-1803

On 13th March 1712 [his father] John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 17) and [his mother] Evelyn Pierrepont Baroness Gower (age 21) were married. She by marriage Baroness Gower. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Evelyn Pierrepont 1st Duke Kingston upon Hull (age 57) and [his grandmother] Mary Fielding Countess Kingston upon Hull. They were fourth cousins.

On 4th August 1721 Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford was born to John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 26) and Evelyn Pierrepont Baroness Gower (age 30).

In 1727 [his mother] Evelyn Pierrepont Baroness Gower (age 36) died.

On 31st October 1733 [his father] John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 39) and [his step-mother] Penelope Stonhouse Baroness Gower (age 28) were married. She by marriage Baroness Gower.

On 16th May 1736 [his father] John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 41) and [his step-mother] Mary Tufton Countess Gower were married. She by marriage Baroness Gower. She the daughter of Thomas Tufton 6th Earl of Thanet and Catherine Cavendish Countess Isle Thanet. They were fourth cousins.

In 1744 Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 22) and Elizabeth Fazakerley were married. He the son of John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 49) and Evelyn Pierrepont Baroness Gower.

In 1746 [his wife] Elizabeth Fazakerley died of smallpox.

In 1748 Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 26) and Louisa Egerton Countess Gower (age 24) were married. She the daughter of Scroop Egerton 1st Duke Bridgewater and Rachel Russell Duchess Bridgewater (age 41). He the son of John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 53) and Evelyn Pierrepont Baroness Gower. They were fifth cousins.

On 26th February 1748 [his brother-in-law] John Egerton 2nd Duke Bridgewater (age 20) died unmarried. His brother [his brother-in-law] Francis (age 11) succeeded 3rd Duke Bridgewater, 6th Earl Bridgewater, 7th Viscount Brackley, 7th Baron Ellesmere.

On 25th December 1754 [his father] John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower (age 60) died. His son Granville (age 33) succeeded 2nd Earl Gower, 3rd Baron Gower, 7th Baronet Gower of Stittenham in Yorkshire. [his wife] Louisa Egerton Countess Gower (age 31) by marriage Countess Gower.

On 9th January 1758 [his son] George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland was born to Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 36) and [his wife] Louisa Egerton Countess Gower (age 34).

In 1761 [his daughter] Anne Leveson-Gower was born to Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 39) and [his wife] Louisa Egerton Countess Gower (age 37).

On 14th May 1761 [his wife] Louisa Egerton Countess Gower (age 38) died.

In 1768 Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 46) and Susanna Stewart Marchioness Stafford were married. She by marriage Countess Gower. She the daughter of Alexander Stewart 6th Earl Galloway (age 74) and Catherine Cochrane Countess Galloway (age 59). He the son of John Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Gower and Evelyn Pierrepont Baroness Gower.

On 13th April 1769 [his daughter] Georgiana Augusta Leveson-Gower was born to Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 47) and [his wife] Susanna Stewart Marchioness Stafford.

On 22nd March 1770 [his son-in-law] Frederick Howard 5th Earl Carlisle (age 21) and [his daughter] Margaret Caroline Leveson-Gower Countess Carlisle were married. She by marriage Countess Carlisle. She the daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 48) and [his former wife] Louisa Egerton Countess Gower. He the son of Henry Howard 4th Earl Carlisle and Isabella Byron Countess Carlisle (age 48). They were fourth cousin once removed.

In 1771 Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 49) was appointed 590th Knight of the Garter by King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 32).

Before February 1771 [his daughter] Charlotte Sophia Leveson-Gower Duchess Beaufort was born to Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 49) and [his wife] Susanna Stewart Marchioness Stafford.

On or before 15th September 1772 [his daughter] Susanna Leveson-Gower Countess Harrowby Lincolnshire was born to Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 51) and [his wife] Susanna Stewart Marchioness Stafford. She was baptised at Trentham, Staffordshire.

On 24th September 1773 [his father-in-law] Alexander Stewart 6th Earl Galloway (age 79) died. His son [his brother-in-law] John (age 37) succeeded 7th Earl Galloway, 6th Baronet Stewart of Corsewall, 5th Baronet Stewart of Burray in Orkney. Anne Dashwood Countess Galloway (age 30) by marriage Countess Galloway.

On 12th October 1773 [his son] Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Earl Granville was born to Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 52) and [his wife] Susanna Stewart Marchioness Stafford.

On 5th February 1784 [his son-in-law] Archbishop Edward Venables-Vernon-Harcourt (age 26) and [his daughter] Anne Leveson-Gower (age 23) were married. She the daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 62) and [his former wife] Louisa Egerton Countess Gower.

On 4th September 1785 [his son] George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland (age 27) and [his daughter-in-law] Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland (age 20) were married. He by marriage Earl Sutherland. She the daughter of William Sutherland 18th Earl Sutherland. On 16th May 1791 [his son-in-law] Henry Charles Somerset 6th Duke Beaufort (age 24) and [his daughter] Charlotte Sophia Leveson-Gower Duchess Beaufort (age 20) were married at St Mary at Lambeth Church, Surrey [Map]. He the son of Henry Somerset 5th Duke Beaufort (age 46) and Elizabeth Boscawen Duchess Beaufort (age 43). They were half fourth cousin once removed.

In 1795 [his son-in-law] Dudley Ryder 1st Earl of Harrowby (age 32) and [his daughter] Susanna Leveson-Gower Countess Harrowby Lincolnshire (age 22) were married. She the daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 73) and [his wife] Susanna Stewart Marchioness Stafford.

On 30th January 1797 [his son-in-law] William Eliot 2nd Earl St Germans (age 29) and [his daughter] Georgiana Augusta Leveson-Gower (age 27) were married at Trentham, Staffordshire. She the daughter of Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 75) and [his wife] Susanna Stewart Marchioness Stafford.

On 26th October 1803 Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Marquess Stafford (age 82) died. His son [his son] George (age 45) succeeded 2nd Marquess Stafford, 3rd Earl Gower, 4th Baron Gower, 8th Baronet Gower of Stittenham in Yorkshire. In 1805 [his former wife] Susanna Stewart Marchioness Stafford died.
