Biography of Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester 1606-1680

In Mar 1606 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester was born to Robert Pierrepont 1st Earl Kingston (age 21) and Gertrude Talbot Baroness Pierrepont Holme Pierrepoint (age 25).
In 1624 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 17) educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University.
On 29 Jun 1627 [his father] Robert Pierrepont 1st Earl Kingston (age 42) was created 1st Baron Pierrepont of Holme Pierrepoint. [his mother] Gertrude Talbot Baroness Pierrepont Holme Pierrepoint (age 46) by marriage Baroness Pierrepont of Holme Pierrepoint.
In 1628 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 21) was elected MP Nottinghamshire.
On 25 Jan 1628 [his father] Robert Pierrepont 1st Earl Kingston (age 43) was created 1st Earl Kingston upon Hull, 1st Viscount Newark. [his mother] Gertrude Talbot Baroness Pierrepont Holme Pierrepoint (age 47) by marriage Countess Kingston upon Hull.
Around 1630 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 23) and Cecilia Bayning (age 16) were married. He the son of Robert Pierrepont 1st Earl Kingston (age 45) and Gertrude Talbot Baroness Pierrepont Holme Pierrepoint (age 49).
On 29 Dec 1630 Oliver St John 1st Viscount Grandison (age 71) died. His great nephew William Villiers 2nd Viscount Grandison (age 16) succeeded 2nd Viscount Grandison. [his sister-in-law] Mary Bayning Countess Anglesey (age 7) by marriage Viscountess Grandison.
In 1631 [his daughter] Anne Pierrepont was born to Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 24) and [his wife] Cecilia Bayning (age 17).
On or before 17 Mar 1632 [his son] Robert Pierrepont was born to Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 26) and [his wife] Cecilia Bayning (age 18). He was baptised on 17 Mar 1632. He died an infant.
Around 1635 [his daughter] Grace Pierrepont was born to Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 28) and [his wife] Cecilia Bayning (age 21).
On 19 Sep 1639 [his wife] Cecilia Bayning (age 26) died.
Before 27 Nov 1640 William Villiers 2nd Viscount Grandison (age 26) and [his former sister-in-law] Mary Bayning Countess Anglesey (age 17) were married. She the heiress of a fortune of £180,000.
On 16 Jul 1643 Francis Willoughby 5th Baron Willoughby of Parham launched a night attack on Gainsborough [Map] and captured it and [his father] Robert Pierrepont 1st Earl Kingston (age 58).
On 25 Jul 1643 Robert Pierrepont 1st Earl Kingston Was accidentally shot and killed while a prisoner on board a vessel bound for Hull. His son Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 37) succeeded 2nd Earl Kingston upon Hull, 2nd Viscount Newark, 2nd Baron Pierrepont of Holme Pierrepoint. [his future wife] Catherine Stanley Marchioness Dorchester by marriage Countess Kingston upon Hull.
After 20 Sep 1643 Charles Villiers 2nd Earl Anglesey and [his former sister-in-law] Mary Bayning Countess Anglesey (age 20) were married. She by marriage Countess Anglesey. He a cousin of her first husband. He the son of Christopher Villiers 1st Earl Anglesey and Elizabeth Sheldon Countess Anglesey (age 35).
In 1645 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 38) was appointed Privy Council.
On 25 Mar 1645 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 39) was created 1st Marquess Dorchester. [his future wife] Catherine Stanley Marchioness Dorchester by marriage Marchioness Dorchester.
In 1647 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 40) fined fined £7,467 for delinquency.
In 1649 [his mother] Gertrude Talbot Baroness Pierrepont Holme Pierrepoint (age 68) died. She was buried at the Church of St Edmund, Holme Pierrepoint [Map].

In Sep 1652 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 46) and Catherine Stanley Marchioness Dorchester were married. She the daughter of James Stanley 7th Earl of Derby and Charlotte Thouars Countess Derby (age 52). He the son of Robert Pierrepont 1st Earl Kingston and Gertrude Talbot Baroness Pierrepont Holme Pierrepoint. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
On 27 Feb 1654 William Wentworth 2nd Earl Strafford (age 27) and [his sister-in-law] Henriette Stanley Countess Strafford (age 23) were married. She the daughter of James Stanley 7th Earl of Derby and [his mother-in-law] Charlotte Thouars Countess Derby (age 54). He the son of Thomas Wentworth 1st Earl Strafford and Arabella Holles. They were fourth cousins. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
Evelyn's Diary. 14 Aug 1654. Went by Newark-on-Trent [Map], a brave town and garrison. Next, by Wharton House, belonging to the Lord Chaworth, a handsome seat; then by Home, a noble place belonging to the Marquis of Dorchester (age 48), and passed the famous River Trent, which divides the South from the North of England; and so lay that night at Nottingham [Map].
Before 1655 [his brother-in-law] Charles Stanley 8th Earl of Derby (age 26) and Dorothea Helena Kirkoven Countess Derby (age 24) were married. She by marriage Countess Derby. She the daughter of Jehan Lord of Heenvliet (age 60) and Katherine Wotton Countess Chesterfield (age 45). He the son of James Stanley 7th Earl of Derby and [his mother-in-law] Charlotte Thouars Countess Derby (age 55). He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
In 1658 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 51) was appointed Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.
On 15 Jul 1658 [his son-in-law] John Manners 1st Duke Rutland (age 20) and [his daughter] Anne Pierrepont (age 27) were married. See Lord Ross Divorce. She the daughter of Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 52) and [his former wife] Cecilia Bayning. He the son of John Manners 8th Earl of Rutland (age 54) and Frances Montagu Countess Rutland (age 44). They were second cousins.
In 1663 [his son-in-law] John Manners 1st Duke Rutland (age 24) and [his daughter] Anne Pierrepont (age 32) were separated. He obtained a "separation from bed and board" on the grounds of her adultery. See Lord Ross Divorce. Around this time it appears her father Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 56) offered John Manners 1st Duke Rutland a duel which he declined. See Lord Ross Divorce.
On 05 May 1659 John Murray 1st Marquess Atholl (age 28) and [his sister-in-law] Amelia Stanley Marchioness Atholl (age 26) were married. She the daughter of James Stanley 7th Earl of Derby and [his mother-in-law] Charlotte Thouars Countess Derby (age 59). He the son of John Murray 1st Earl Atholl and Jean Campbell Countess Atholl. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
In 1660 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 53) was appointed Privy Council.
In 1662 William Wentworth 2nd Earl Strafford (age 35) was restored 2nd Earl Strafford, 2nd Viscount Wentworth, 2nd Baron Wentworth, 3rd Baronet Wentworth of Wentworth Woodhouse in Yorkshire. [his sister-in-law] Henriette Stanley Countess Strafford (age 31) by marriage Countess Strafford.
Pepy's Diary. 12 Nov 1666. Lay long in bed, and then up, and Mr. Carcasse brought me near 500 tickets to sign, which I did, and by discourse find him a cunning, confident, shrewd man, but one that I do doubt hath by his discourse of the ill will he hath got with my Lord Marquess of Dorchester (age 60) (with whom he lived), he hath had cunning practices in his time, and would not now spare to use the same to his profit.
Pepy's Diary. 19 Dec 1666. Thence I up to the Lords' House to enquire for Lord Bellasses (age 52); and there hear how at a conference this morning between the two Houses about the business of the Canary Company, my Lord Buckingham (age 38) leaning rudely over my Lord Marquis Dorchester, my Lord Dorchester (age 60) removed his elbow. Duke of Buckingham asked him whether he was uneasy; Dorchester replied, yes, and that he durst not do this were he any where else: Buckingham replied, yes he would, and that he was a better man than himself; Dorchester answered that he lyed. With this Buckingham struck off his hat, and took him by his periwigg, and pulled it aside, and held him. My Lord Chamberlain (age 64) and others interposed, and, upon coming into the House, the Lords did order them both to the Tower, whither they are to go this afternoon.
Evelyn's Diary. 11 May 1667. To London; dined with the Duke of Newcastle (age 74), and sat discoursing with her Grace (age 44) in her bedchamber after dinner, till my Lord Marquis of Dorchester (age 61), with other company came in, when I went away.
In 1672 [his former sister-in-law] Mary Bayning Countess Anglesey (age 49) died.
On 21 Dec 1672 [his brother-in-law] Charles Stanley 8th Earl of Derby (age 44) died. His son William Stanley 9th Earl of Derby (age 17) succeeded 9th Earl Derby, 3rd Baron Strange Knockin.
On 07 Feb 1676 John Murray 1st Marquess Atholl (age 44) was created 1st Marquess Atholl. [his sister-in-law] Amelia Stanley Marchioness Atholl (age 43) by marriage Marchioness Atholl.
On 08 Dec 1680 Henry Pierrepont 1st Marquess Dorchester (age 74) died. He was buried at Holme Pierrepoint, Nottinghamshire [Map]. Marquess Dorchester extinct. His great nephew Robert Pierrepont 3rd Earl Kingston (age 20) succeeded 3rd Earl Kingston upon Hull, 3rd Viscount Newark, 3rd Baron Pierrepont of Holme Pierrepoint.
