Double Royal Wedding

On 19 May 1359, or thereabouts, a double-royal wedding celebration took place at Reading Abbey, Berkshire [Map] whereby two children of King Edward III of England (age 46) were married:

[his future father-in-law] John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster (age 19) and Blanche Duchess of Lancaster (age 17) were married. She by marriage Countess Richmond. She the daughter of Henry of Grosmont 1st Duke Lancaster (age 49) and Isabel Beaumont Duchess Lancaster (age 39). He the son of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault Queen Consort England (age 44). They were half second cousin once removed. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Henry III of England.

[his father] John Hastings 2nd Earl Pembroke (age 11) and Margaret Plantagenet Countess of Pembroke (age 12) were married. At the time John Hastings 2nd Earl Pembroke was a ward of King Edward III of England who would enjoy the benefit of the substantial revenue of the Earldom of Pembroke until John came of age nine years later in 1368. She died two or so years later probably of plague. She the daughter of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault Queen Consort England. He the son of [his grandfather] Laurence Hastings 1st Earl Pembroke and [his grandmother] Agnes Mortimer Countess of Pembroke (age 42). They were half fourth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King John of England.

In Jul 1368 [his father] John Hastings 2nd Earl Pembroke (age 20) and [his mother] Anne Manny Countess Pembroke were married. She by marriage Countess Pembroke. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Walter Manny 1st Baron Manny (age 58) and [his grandmother] Margaret Plantagenet 2nd Countess Norfolk. He the son of [his grandfather] Laurence Hastings 1st Earl Pembroke and [his grandmother] Agnes Mortimer Countess of Pembroke. They were half fourth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King John of England. She a great granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

In Oct 1372 John Hastings 3rd Earl Pembroke was born to John Hastings 2nd Earl Pembroke (age 25) and Anne Manny Countess Pembroke. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward I of England.

On 16 Apr 1375 [his father] John Hastings 2nd Earl Pembroke (age 27) died. He was buried at Hereford [Map]. His son John Hastings 3rd Earl Pembroke (age 2) succeeded 3rd Earl Pembroke, 5th Baron Hastings, 16th Baron Bergavenny Feudal Creation.

On 24 Jun 1380 John Hastings 3rd Earl Pembroke (age 7) and Elizabeth Lancaster Duchess Exeter (age 17) were married at Kenilworth Castle [Map]. She by marriage Countess Pembroke. She the daughter of John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster (age 40) and Blanche Duchess of Lancaster. He the son of John Hastings 2nd Earl Pembroke and Anne Manny Countess Pembroke. They were half third cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward I of England. She a granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

After 24 Jun 1380 John Hastings 3rd Earl Pembroke (age 7) and Elizabeth Lancaster Duchess Exeter (age 17) marriage annulled since she had become pregnant by John Holland 1st Duke Exeter (age 28) whom she subsequently married. It isn't clear whether John Holland was punished; he was half-brother to King Richard II of England (age 13) through their mother Joan "Fair Maid of Kent" Princess Wales (age 51).

On 05 Feb 1381 [his former brother-in-law] King Henry IV of England (age 13) and Mary Bohun (age 13) were married at Arundel Castle [Map]. She the daughter of Humphrey Bohun 7th Earl Hereford 6th Earl Essex 2nd Earl of Northampton and Joan Fitzalan Countess Essex, Hereford and Northampton (age 34). He the son of [his former father-in-law] John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster (age 40) and Blanche Duchess of Lancaster. They were second cousins. He a grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.

Peasants' Revolt

On 14 Jun 1381 the mob gained access to the Tower of London [Map] capturing Joan "Fair Maid of Kent" Princess Wales (age 52), the future [his former brother-in-law] King Henry IV of England (age 14), Joan Holland Duchess York (age 1) and Archbishop Simon Sudbury (age 65).

Archbishop Simon Sudbury was beheaded at Tower Hill [Map]. He was buried at Canterbury Cathedral [Map].

Lord Treasurer Robert Hales (age 56), who had only been appointed on the 1st February 1381, was beheaded at Tower Hill [Map].

In 1384 [his mother] Anne Manny Countess Pembroke died. Her son John Hastings 3rd Earl Pembroke (age 11) succeeded 3rd Baron Manny.

On 24 Jun 1386 John Holland 1st Duke Exeter (age 34) and [his former wife] Elizabeth Lancaster Duchess Exeter (age 23) were married at Plymouth, Devon [Map]. She the daughter of [his former father-in-law] John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster (age 46) and Blanche Duchess of Lancaster. He the son of Thomas Holland 1st Earl Kent and Joan "Fair Maid of Kent" Princess Wales. They were half second cousin once removed. He a great grandson of King Edward I of England. She a granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 02 Feb 1387 King John I of Portugal (age 35) and [his former sister-in-law] Philippa of Lancaster Queen Consort Portugal (age 26) were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Portugal. She the daughter of [his former father-in-law] John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster (age 46) and Blanche Duchess of Lancaster. He the son of Peter I King Portugal and Inês Castro. They were half fourth cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England. She a granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Battle of Radcot Bridge

On 19 Dec 1387 an army of the Lords Appellant led by the future [his former brother-in-law] King Henry IV of England (age 20) prevented the forces of King Richard II of England (age 20) commanded by Robert de Vere 1st Duke Ireland (age 25) from crossing the bridge [Map] over the River Thames at Radcot in Oxfordshire. When Thomas of Woodstock 1st Duke of Gloucester (age 32) arrived with further Lord Appellant's men the King's men were encircled. The King's men attempted to force the crossing of the bridge at which time the only casualties occurred including Thomas Molyneux (age 49) who was killed by Thomas Mortimer (age 37). Around 800 men drowned in the marshes whilst trying to escape. Robert de Vere 1st Duke Ireland narrowly escaped to France.

He the son of John Hastings 2nd Earl Pembroke and Anne Manny Countess Pembroke. They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward I of England. She a great granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Before 17 Sep 1388 Henry III King Castile (age 8) and [his former sister-in-law] Catherine of Lancaster Queen Consort Castile (age 15) were married at Palencia Cathedral [Map]. She by marriage Queen Consort Castile. She the daughter of [his former father-in-law] John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster (age 48) and Constance of Castile Duchess of Lancaster (age 34). He the son of John I King Castile (age 30) and Eleanor Barcelona Queen Consort Castile. They were half second cousins. She a granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 07 Oct 1388 [his brother-in-law] Roger Mortimer 4th Earl March 6th Earl Ulster (age 14) and Eleanor Holland Countess March and Ulster (age 17) were married. She by marriage Countess March, Countess Ulster. She the daughter of Thomas Holland 2nd Earl Kent (age 38) and Alice Fitzalan Countess Kent (age 38). He the son of Edmund Mortimer 3rd Earl March, Earl Ulster and Philippa Plantagenet Countess March 5th Countess Ulster. They were second cousin once removed. Christmas Court

On 30 Dec 1389 John Hastings 3rd Earl Pembroke (age 17) was killed in a tournament during the Christmas Court at Woodstock Palace, Oxfordshire [Map]. He was struck in the groin by the lance of Sir John Des. Earl Pembroke and Baron Manny extinct.

John Hastings 6th Baron Hastings (age 61) de jure 6th Baron Hastings. His claim was contested by Reginald Grey 3rd Baron Grey Ruthyn (age 27) who was the son of Elizabeth Hastings Baroness Grey Ruthyn daughter of John Hastings 13th Baron Bergavenny 1st Baron Hastings his case being that he was of the full blood whereas John Hastings 6th Baron Hastings was of the half-blood ie Reginald Grey 3rd Baron Grey Ruthyn, like John Hastings 3rd Earl Pembroke, was descended from John Hastings 13th Baron Bergavenny 1st Baron Hastings and Isabel Valence Baroness Bergavenny Baroness Hastings, whereas John Hastings 6th Baron Hastings was descended from John Hastings 13th Baron Bergavenny 1st Baron Hastings and Isabel Despencer Baroness Hastings and Bergavenny.

After 30 Dec 1389 Richard Fitzalan 9th Earl of Surrey 11th Earl of Arundel (age 43) and [his former wife] Philippa Mortimer Countess Pembroke, Arundel and Surrey (age 14) were married. She by marriage Countess Arundel Sussex, Countess Surrey. The difference in their ages was 29 years. She the daughter of Edmund Mortimer 3rd Earl March, Earl Ulster and Philippa Plantagenet Countess March 5th Countess Ulster. He the son of Richard Fitzalan 10th Earl of Arundel 8th Earl of Surrey and Eleanor Plantagenet Countess Arundel and Surrey. They were first cousin twice removed. On 26 Sep 1400 [his former wife] Philippa Mortimer Countess Pembroke, Arundel and Surrey (age 24) died.

On 24 Nov 1426 [his former wife] Elizabeth Lancaster Duchess Exeter (age 63) died. She was buried at St Mary's Church, Burford [Map].
