Before 1538 [her father] Thomas Audley 1st Baron Audley Walden (age 49) and Christina or Margaret Barnardiston (age 47) were married.

Wriothesley's Chronicle 1538. 22 Apr 1538. This yeare, the morrowe after Easter dale, being the twentie towe daie of Aprill, Sir [her father] Thomas Awdeley (age 50), knight, Lord Chauncelor of Englande, was married to my Ladie [her mother] Elizabeth Graie,a sister to the [her uncle] Lord Marques of Dorsett (age 21) now living, and daughter to the old [her grandfather] Lord Marques late deceased.

Note. Thomas Audley 1st Baron Audley Walden and were married. She by marriage Baroness Audley Walden in Essex. She the daughter of Thomas Grey 2nd Marquess Dorset and [her grandmother] Margaret Wotton Marchioness Dorset. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Note a. Elizabeth Grey, eldest daughter of Thomas fifth Marquis of Dorset, and sister of Henry, who succeeded to the title in 1530.

In 1540 Margaret Audley Duchess Norfolk was born to Thomas Audley 1st Baron Audley Walden (age 52) and Elizabeth Grey Baroness Audley.

On 30 Apr 1544 [her father] Thomas Audley 1st Baron Audley Walden (age 56) died. He was buried at Saffron Walden, Essex [Map]. Baron Audley Walden in Essex extinct.

Before 22 Aug 1553 Henry Dudley (age 22) and Margaret Audley Duchess Norfolk (age 13) were married. He the son of John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland (age 49) and Jane Guildford Duchess Northumberland (age 44). They were third cousin once removed.

Trial and Execution of Lady Jane Grey's Supporters

On 22 Aug 1553 [her father-in-law] John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland (age 49) was beheaded at Tower Hill [Map]. Duke Northumberland, Earl Warwick and Viscount Lisle forfeit. [her brother-in-law] John Dudley 2nd Earl Warwick (age 26), his son, was also attainted, with the Earldom of Warwick forfeit.

Thomas Palmer and John Gates (age 49) were hanged, drawn and quartered.

On 21 Oct 1554 [her brother-in-law] John Dudley 2nd Earl Warwick (age 27) died at Penshurst Place, Kent [Map].

On 26 Dec 1554 [her brother-in-law] Ambrose Dudley 3rd Earl Warwick (age 24) was created 1st Baron Lisle. Elizabeth Tailboys Countess Warwick (age 32) by marriage Countess Warwick.

In 1556 [her future husband] Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk (age 19) and Mary Fitzalan Duchess Norfolk (age 16) were married. She by marriage Duchess Norfolk, Countess Surrey. She the daughter of Henry Fitzalan 12th or 19th Earl of Arundel (age 43) and [her aunt] Katherine Grey. They were second cousin once removed.

Battle of St Quentin

On 10 Aug 1557 Henry Manners 2nd Earl of Rutland (age 30) fought being Captain-General of the cavalry at the Battle of St Quentin.

Jean Bourbon Count Soissons and Enghien (age 29) was killed at the Battle of St Quentin. His brother Louis Bourbon Prince Condé (age 27) succeeded Count Soissons 1367.

[her husband] Henry Dudley (age 26) was killed.

In 1558 Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk (age 21) and Margaret Audley Duchess Norfolk (age 18) were married. She by marriage Duchess Norfolk, Countess Surrey. They were fourth cousins.

Lady Margaret Strange married Henry Stanley Lord Strange (age 30) on 07 Feb 1555. In 1561 he had not succeeded to Earldom of Derby and was known by the courtesy title Lord Strange. She is listed first since she was one of the few remaining direct descendants of Henry VII, being a great-granddaughter by his daughter Mary Tudor. Margaret Clifford was first in line to succeed in 1568 but died in 1596 before Elizabeth I.

Henry Machyn's Diary. 08 Oct 1562. The viij day of October my lord the [her husband] duke of Northfoke (age 26) and the duches my good lade ys wyff (age 22) cam rydyng thrughe London and thrughe Byshope-gatt [Map] to Leydyn-hall [Map], and so to Chrychyre to ys own plase, with a C [100] horse in ys leverey was ys men gentyll-men a-fore cottes gardyd with velvett, and with iiij haroldes a-for hym, master Clarenshux kyng at armes (age 52), master Somersett and master Ruge-crosse and master Blumantylle ryd a-fore.... to be bered at sant [Note. Possibly St Dunstan's in the West, Fleet Street [Map]] mastores Chamley the wyff of master Ch[amley recorder? of Lo]ndon, with a palle of blake velvett and with .... ther dyd pryche at her berehyng master (blank) ... mornars, and she had a harold of arm .... dosen of skochyons of armes; and after home t[o dinner.]

Note. P. 294. Funeral of mistress Chamley. This paragraph is so imperfect that it is not certain that it relates to the wife of the Recorder. He, however, was buried at St. Dunstan's in the West in the following April (see p. 395), and his epitaph commenced—"Ranulphus Cholmeley chara hic cum conjuge dormit."

On 19 Dec 1563 [her son] William Howard was born to [her husband] Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk (age 27) and Margaret Audley Duchess Norfolk (age 23) at Saffron Walden, Essex [Map].

In 1564 [her mother] Elizabeth Grey Baroness Audley died.

On 09 Jan 1564 Margaret Audley Duchess Norfolk (age 24) died at Norwich, Norfolk [Map] following the birth of her fourth child. She was initially buried at Church of St John the Baptist, Norwich [Map]. Her remains were moved to the Church of St Michael the Archangel, Framlingham [Map].

In 1567 [her former husband] Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk (age 30) and Elizabeth Leybourne Duchess Norfolk (age 31) were married. She by marriage Duchess Norfolk, Countess Surrey.

Ridolphi Plot

On 02 Jun 1572 [her former husband] Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk (age 36) was executed for his involvement in the Ridolphi Plot. He was buried at St Peter ad Vincula Church, Tower of London [Map]. Duke Norfolk forfeit..

In 1597 [her son] Thomas Howard 1st Earl Suffolk (age 35) was created 1st Baron Howard de Walden by writ of summons. [her daughter-in-law] Catherine Knyvet Countess Suffolk (age 33) by marriage Baroness Howard de Walden. His mother's [her father] father was the first and last Baron Audley Walden in Essex.
