In 1439 William Tresham bought manor of Westhall, in Rushton St Peter, in which Rushton Hall, Rushton would later be built.

Battle of Tewkesbury

On 06 May 1471 those captured at the Battle of Tewkesbury: Edmund Beaufort 3rd Duke of Somerset (age 32), Hugh Courtenay (age 44), Gervase Clifton (age 66) and Humphrey Tuchet (age 37) were executed. Duke Somerset extinct.

Thomas Tresham (age 51) was executed. His estates including manor of Westhall, in Rushton St Peter, were forfeit.

In 1485 the manor of manor of Westhall, in Rushton St Peter, were restored to John Tresham (age 23) in which he commissioned the building of Rushton Hall.

In 1521 John Tresham (age 59) died. His son Thomas Tresham (age 21) inherited Rushton Hall who commissioned further building work.

On 08 Mar 1559 Thomas Tresham (age 59) died. His grandson Thomas Tresham (age 16) inherited Rushton Hall who enclosed the park, and constructed the surviving Triangular Lodge (1594-7) and the Hawkfield Tower (1593-8) which does not survive. He also made alterations to the house, and began the construction of Lyvedon New Bield with its extensive formal gardens, around 15km east-north-east of Rushton.

On 11 Sep 1605 Thomas Tresham (age 62) died. His son Francis Tresham inherited Rushton Hall although he died three months later.

Gunpowder Plot

On 30 Dec 1605 Francis Tresham died whilst imprisoned at the Tower of London [Map] for his part in the Gunpowder Plot. His brother Lewis Tresham 1st Baronet (age 30) inherited Rushton Hall.

In 1619 Lewis Tresham 1st Baronet (age 44) sold Rushton Hall to William Cockayne (age 58).

On 20 Oct 1626 William Cockayne (age 65) died. His son Charles Cockayne 1st Viscount Cullen (age 24) inherited Rushton Hall. The Hall descended in the Cullen fmaily until the death of the last Viscount Borlase Cockayne 6th Viscount Cullen in 1810.

In 1810 Borlase Cockayne 6th Viscount Cullen (age 70) died unmarried. Viscount Cullen extinct. The trustees of his estate sold Rushton Hall 1828 to William W Hope.
