The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." The King has been pleased to direct Letters Patent to be passed under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, granting the dignity of a Baron of the said United Kingdom unto the Right Honourable Sir Ughtred James Kay-Shuttleworth (age 57), Baronet, and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style, and title of Baron Shuttleworth, of Gawthorpe, in the County Palatine of Lancaster.
On 20th December 1939 Ughtred Kay-Shuttleworth 1st Baron Shuttleworth (age 95) died. His grandson Richard (age 26) succeeded 2nd Baron Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe in Lancashire, Richard Kay-Shuttleworth 2nd Baron Shuttleworth, 3rd Baronet Kay-Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe Hall in Lancashire.
On 8th August 1940 Richard Kay-Shuttleworth 2nd Baron Shuttleworth (age 26) was killed in action when his Hawker Hurricane went missing during a battle over a convoy in the English Channel, south of the Isle of Wight. He was a Flying Officer with 145 Sqdn. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve; Service No: 70356. His brother Ronald (age 22) succeeded 3rd Baron Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe in Lancashire, 4th Baronet Kay-Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe Hall in Lancashire.
On 17th November 1942 Ronald Kay-Shuttleworth 3rd Baron Shuttleworth (age 25) was killed in action. He was buried at the Tabarka Ras Rajel War Cemetery, Tabarka, Jandūbah, Tunisia. His half first cousin Charles (age 25) succeeded 4th Baron Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe in Lancashire, 5th Baronet Kay-Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe Hall in Lancashire.
On 5th October 1975 Charles Kay-Shuttleworth 4th Baron Shuttleworth (age 58) died. His son Charles (age 27) succeeded 5th Baron Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe in Lancashire, 6th Baronet Kay-Shuttleworth of Gawthorpe Hall in Lancashire.
