Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

Duke Northumberland 1st Creation 1551

11th October 1551, the day before his fourteenth birthday, King Edward VI [aged 13] celebrated at Hampton Court Palace [Map] by rewarding his guardians; it may have been a case of his guardians rewarding themselves.

John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 47] was created 1st Duke Northumberland. Jane Guildford Duchess Northumberland [aged 42] by marriage Duchess Northumberland. His son Henry Dudley [aged 25] was knighted.

Henry Grey 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 34] was created 1st Duke Suffolk for having married King Edward VI's first cousin Frances Brandon Duchess of Suffolk [aged 34]. Frances Brandon Duchess of Suffolk by marriage Duchess Suffolk.

William Paulet [aged 68] was created 1st Marquess Winchester. Elizabeth Capell Marchioness Winchester by marriage Marchioness Winchester.

His guardian William Herbert [aged 50] was created 1st Earl Pembroke. Anne Parr Countess Pembroke [aged 36] by marriage Countess Pembroke.

Edward Seymour 1st Duke of Somerset [aged 51], the King's uncle attended.

Henry Dudley was knighted at Hampton Court Palace, Richmond [Map].

On 22nd August 1553 John Dudley 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 49] was beheaded at Tower Hill [Map]. Duke Northumberland, Earl Warwick and Viscount Lisle forfeit. John Dudley 2nd Earl Warwick [aged 26], his son, was also attainted, with the Earldom of Warwick forfeit.

Thomas Palmer and John Gates [aged 49] were hanged, drawn and quartered.

On 6th April 1683 George Fitzroy 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 17] was created 1st Duke Northumberland by King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 52].

On 28th June 1716 George Fitzroy 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 50] died at Epsom, Surrey without legitimate issue. Duke Northumberland, Earl of Northumberland, Viscount Falmouth, Baron Pontefract extinct.

In 1766 Hugh Percy 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 50] was created 1st Duke Northumberland. Elizabeth Seymour Duchess Northumberland [aged 49] by marriage Duchess Northumberland.

On 6th June 1786 Hugh Percy 1st Duke Northumberland [aged 70] died. His son Hugh [aged 43] succeeded 2nd Duke Northumberland, 2nd Baron Lovain, 5th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire. Frances Julia Burrell Duchess Northumberland [aged 33] by marriage Duchess Northumberland.

On 10th July 1817 Hugh Percy 2nd Duke Northumberland [aged 74] died. His son Hugh [aged 32] succeeded 3rd Duke Northumberland, 3rd Baron Lovain, 4th Baron Percy, 6th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire. Charlotte Herbert Duchess Northumberland [aged 29] by marriage Duchess Northumberland.

William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 11th February 1847 Hugh Percy 3rd Duke Northumberland [aged 61] died without issue at Alnwick, Northumberland [Map].

Algernon Percy 4th Duke Northumberland [aged 54] succeeded 4th Duke Northumberland, 4th Baron Lovain, 5th Baron Percy, 7th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire. Eleanor Grosvenor Duchess Northumberland [aged 26] by marriage Duchess Northumberland.

On 12th February 1865 Algernon Percy 4th Duke Northumberland [aged 72] died without issue. His first cousin George [aged 86] succeeded 5th Duke Northumberland, 8th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire. His great nephew John [aged 24] succeeded 6th Baron Percy. Baron Lovain extinct.

On 22nd August 1867 George Percy 5th Duke Northumberland [aged 89] died. His son Algernon [aged 57] succeeded 6th Duke Northumberland, 3rd Earl Beverley, 9th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire. Louisa Drummond Duchess Northumberland by marriage Duchess Northumberland.

On 2nd January 1899 Algernon George Percy 6th Duke Northumberland [aged 88] died. He was buried at Northumberland Vault, Crypt, Westminster Abbey. His son Henry [aged 52] succeeded 7th Duke Northumberland, 4th Earl Beverley, 10th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire. Edith Campbell Duchess Northumberland [aged 49] by marriage Duchess Northumberland.

On 14th May 1918 Henry George Percy 7th Duke Northumberland [aged 71] died. He was buried at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Lesbury [Map]. His son Alan [aged 38] succeeded 8th Duke Northumberland, 5th Earl Beverley, 11th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire. Helen Gordon-Lennox Duchess Northumberland [aged 31] by marriage Duchess Northumberland.

On 23rd August 1930 Alan Ian Percy 8th Duke Northumberland [aged 50] died. His son Henry [aged 18] succeeded 9th Duke Northumberland, 6th Earl Beverley, 12th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire.

On 21st May 1940 Henry George Alan Percy 9th Duke Northumberland [aged 27] was killed in action at Pecq in Belgium, serving with the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, in a brave charge against overwhelming odds that was described as suicidal. His body is interred in the Esquelmes War Cemetery. His brother Hugh [aged 26] succeeded 10th Duke Northumberland, 7th Earl Beverley, 13th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire.

On 11th October 1988 Hugh Algernon Percy 10th Duke Northumberland [aged 74] died. His son Henry [aged 35] succeeded 11th Duke Northumberland, 8th Earl Beverley, 10th Baron Percy, 14th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire.

On 31st October 1995 Henry Percy 11th Duke of Northumberland [aged 42] died from an overdose of amphetamines. He was unmarried. His brother Ralph [aged 38] succeeded 12th Duke Northumberland, 9th Earl Beverley, 11th Baron Percy, 15th Baronet Smithson of Stanwick in Yorkshire.
