Published March 2025. The Deeds of King Henry V, or in Latin Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

Before 1138 Baldwin Redvers 1st Earl Devon and Adelisa Baluun Countess Devon were married. She by marriage Baroness Strange Knockin, Countess Devon.

In 1141 Baldwin Redvers 1st Earl Devon was created 1st Earl Devon.

On 4th June 1155 Baldwin Redvers 1st Earl Devon died. His grandson Richard succeeded 2nd Earl Devon.

In 1162 Richard Redvers 2nd Earl Devon died. His son Baldwin (age 2) succeeded 3rd Earl Devon.

In 1188 Baldwin Redvers 3rd Earl Devon (age 28) died. His brother Richard succeeded 4th Earl Devon and Hawyse aka Denise de Dunstanville.

In 1193 Richard Redvers 4th Earl Devon died. His great uncle William succeeded 5th Earl Devon.

On 10th September 1217 William Redvers 5th Earl Devon died. His grandson Baldwin succeeded 6th Earl Devon.

On 15th February 1245 Baldwin Redvers 6th Earl Devon (age 28) died. His son Baldwin (age 9) succeeded 7th Earl Devon.

In 1255 Baldwin Redvers 6th Earl Devon and Amice Clare Countess Devon (age 34) were married. She by marriage Countess Devon. She the daughter of Gilbert Clare 5th Earl Gloucester 4th Earl Hertford and Isabel Marshal Countess Cornwall, Gloucester and Hertford. They were fourth cousins. He a great x 3 grandson of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England.

In 1257 Baldwin Redvers 7th Earl Devon (age 20) and Margherita Savoy Countess Devon were married. She by marriage Countess Devon. She the daughter of Thomas Savoy I Count Savoy and Margaret Geneva Countess Savoy. He the son of Baldwin Redvers 6th Earl Devon and Amice Clare Countess Devon (age 36).

In 1262 Baldwin Redvers 7th Earl Devon (age 25) died. His sister Isabella (age 24) succeeded 8th Countess Devon.

On 10th November 1293 Isabella Redvers 8th Countess Devon and Albemarle (age 56) died. Earl Devon extinct.

In 1335 Hugh Courtenay 9th Earl Devon (age 58) was restored 9th Earl Devon. Some regard this as a new creation. Agnes St John Countess Devon (age 60) by marriage Countess Devon.

On 23rd December 1340 Hugh Courtenay 9th Earl Devon (age 64) died. His son Hugh (age 37) succeeded 10th Earl Devon, 5th Baron Okehampton, 2nd Baron Courtenay. Margaret Bohun Countess Devon (age 29) by marriage Countess Devon.

On 2nd May 1377 Hugh Courtenay 10th Earl Devon (age 73) died at Exeter, Devon [Map]. His grandson Edward (age 20) succeeded 11th Earl Devon, 6th Baron Okehampton.

In or before 1385 Edward "Blind Earl" Courtenay 11th Earl Devon (age 27) and Maud Camoys Countess Devon were married. She by marriage Countess Devon.

On 5th December 1419 Edward "Blind Earl" Courtenay 11th Earl Devon (age 62) died. His son Hugh (age 30) succeeded 12th Earl Devon, 7th Baron Okehampton, 5th Baron Courtenay. Anne Talbot Countess Devon (age 26) by marriage Countess Devon.

On 16th June 1422 Hugh Courtenay 12th Earl Devon (age 33) died. His son Thomas (age 8) succeeded 13th Earl Devon, 8th Baron Okehampton, 6th Baron Courtenay. Margaret Beaufort Countess Devon (age 13) by marriage Countess Devon.

After 9th September 1456 Thomas Courtenay 14th Earl Devon (age 24) and Mary Capet Countess Devon (age 10) were married at Coventry, Warwickshire [Map]. She by marriage Countess Devon. She the illegitmate daughter of Charles Valois Anjou Count Maine (age 42). He the son of Thomas Courtenay 13th Earl Devon (age 42) and Margaret Beaufort Countess Devon. They were fifth cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England.

In 1458 Thomas Courtenay 13th Earl Devon (age 44) died at Yattendon Castle [Map]. He was buried at Courtenay Chantry Chapel Exeter Cathedral. His son Thomas (age 26) succeeded 14th Earl Devon, 9th Baron Okehampton, 7th Baron Courtenay.

On 3rd April 1461 Thomas Courtenay 14th Earl Devon (age 29) was beheaded at York [Map] following his capture at the Battle of Towton. he was attainted; Earl Devon forfeit.

In 1471 John Courtenay 15th Earl Devon (age 36) was restored 15th Earl Devon, 8th Baron Courtenay, 10th Baron Okehampton. Laura Bourchier Countess Devon (age 31) by marriage Countess Devon.

On 4th May 1471 King Edward IV of England (age 29) was victorious at the 4th May 1471 Battle of Tewkesbury. His brother Richard (age 18), Richard Beauchamp 2nd Baron Beauchamp Powick (age 36), John Howard 1st Duke of Norfolk (age 46), George Neville 4th and 2nd Baron Abergavenny (age 31), John Savage (age 49), John Savage (age 27), Thomas St Leger (age 31), John Tuchet 6th Baron Audley, 3rd Baron Tuchet (age 45), Thomas Burgh 1st Baron Burgh of Gainsborough (age 40) fought. William Brandon (age 46), George Browne (age 31), Ralph Hastings, Richard Hastings Baron Willoughby (age 38), James Tyrrell (age 16), Roger Kynaston of Myddle and Hordley (age 38) were knighted. William Hastings 1st Baron Hastings (age 40) commanded.

Margaret of Anjou (age 41) was captured. Her son Edward of Westminster Prince of Wales (age 17) was killed. He was the last of the Lancastrian line excluding the illegitmate Charles Somerset 1st Earl of Worcester (age 11) whose line continues to the present.

John Courtenay 15th Earl Devon (age 36) was killed and attainted. Earl Devon, Baron Courtenay forfeit. Some sources refer to these titles as being abeyant?

John Wenlock 1st Baron Wenlock (age 71) was killed. Baron Wenlock extinct.

John Delves (age 49), John Beaufort (age 30), William Vaux of Harrowden (age 35) and Robert Whittingham (age 42) were killed.

Edmund Beaufort 3rd Duke of Somerset (age 32), Humphrey Tuchet (age 37) and Hugh Courtenay (age 44) were captured.

Henry Roos fought and escaped to Tewkesbury Abbey [Map] where he sought sanctuary. He was subsequently pardoned.

William Carey (age 34) was killed.

Earl Devon (2nd Creation)

On 7th May 1469 Humphrey Stafford 1st Earl Devon (age 30) was created 1st Earl Devon. See Warkworth Note 4.

In August 1469 Humphrey Stafford 1st Earl Devon (age 30) forfeit Earl Devon, Baron Stafford of Southwick.

On 17th August 1469 Humphrey Stafford 1st Earl Devon (age 30), having escaped after the Battle of Edgecote Moor, was captured and executed by a mob at Bridgwater, Somerset [Map]. He was buried at Glastonbury Abbey [Map]. Earl Devon, Baron Stafford of Southwick extinct.

Earl Devon (3rd Creation)

On 28th October 1485 Jasper Tudor 1st Duke Bedford (age 53) was created 1st Duke Bedford by Henry VII (age 28) for having supported Henry's claim to the throne. Catherine Woodville Duchess Buckingham and Bedford (age 27) by marriage Duchess Bedford.

Thomas Stanley 1st Earl of Derby (age 50) was created 1st Earl Derby.

Edward Courtenay 1st Earl Devon (age 26) was created 1st Earl Devon. It is believed he was restored 11th Baron Okehampton at the same time?

Reginald Bray (age 45), John Fitzwalter, Thomas Cokesge, Roger Lewknor, Henry Haydon and John Verney were appointed Knight of the Bath.

Around 27th May 1509 Edward Courtenay 1st Earl Devon (age 50) died. Earl Devon, Baron Okehampton, Baron Courtenay forfeit since his son William Courtenay 1st Earl Devon (age 34) had been attainted in Feb 1504.

In December 1512 Henry Courtenay 1st Marquess Exeter (age 16) was restored 2nd Earl Devon, 11th Baron Okehampton by an Act of Parliament.

On 9th December 1538 Henry Pole 1st Baron Montagu (age 46) and Henry Courtenay 1st Marquess Exeter (age 42) were beheaded at Tower Hill [Map]. Henry Courtenay 1st Marquess Exeter, his wife Gertrude Blount Marchioness of Exeter (age 35) and their son Edward Courtenay 1st Earl Devon (age 11) were attainted; Marquess Exeter, Earl Devon, Earl Devon, Baron Okehampton, Baron Courtenay forfeit.

His son was subsequently created 1st Earl Devon in 1553. Marquess Exeter,

Earl Devon (4th Creation)

On 10th May 1511 William Courtenay 1st Earl Devon (age 36) was created 1st Earl Devon. He died a month later. Catherine York Countess Devon (age 31) by marriage Countess Devon.

On 9th June 1511 William Courtenay 1st Earl Devon (age 36) died of pleurisy. His son Henry (age 15) succeeded 2nd Earl Devon. His widow Catherine York Countess Devon (age 31) subsequently took a vow of celibacy in the presence of Bishop Richard Fitzjames on 13th July 1511.

After June 1515 Henry Courtenay 1st Marquess Exeter (age 19) and Elizabeth Grey Countess Devon (age 10) were married. She by marriage Countess Devon. He the son of William Courtenay 1st Earl Devon and Catherine York Countess Devon (age 35). They were fifth cousin once removed. He a grandson of King Edward IV of England.

On 25th October 1519 Henry Courtenay 1st Marquess Exeter (age 23) and Gertrude Blount Marchioness of Exeter (age 16) were married. She by marriage Countess Devon. He the son of William Courtenay 1st Earl Devon and Catherine York Countess Devon (age 40).

Earl Devon (5th Creation)

Henry Courtenay 1st Marquess Exeter, his wife Gertrude Blount Marchioness of Exeter (age 35) and their son Edward Courtenay 1st Earl Devon (age 11) were attainted; Marquess Exeter, Earl Devon, Earl Devon, Baron Okehampton, Baron Courtenay forfeit.

His son was subsequently created 1st Earl Devon in 1553. Marquess Exeter,

On 3rd September 1553 Edward Courtenay 1st Earl Devon (age 26) was created 1st Earl Devon. The Earldom was created with a special remainder i.e. to his heirs male forever, rather than to the heirs male of his body, so that on his death in 1556 he was succeeded by his fourth cousin William Courtenay 2nd Earl Devon (age 24) who was not a descendant of his. The position was not made clear, however, until 1831, when the 9th Earl, William "Kitty" Courtenay 9th Earl Devon claimed the Earldom and became the de facto Earl of Devon.

On 18th September 1556 Edward Courtenay 1st Earl Devon (age 29) died. His fourth cousin William (age 27) de jure 2nd Earl Devon. Elizabeth Paulett Countess Devon by marriage Countess Devon. John Trelawny of Poole in Cornwall (age 52) was one of his co-heirs.

On 29th September 1557 William Courtenay 3rd Earl Devon (age 4) de jure 3rd Earl Devon.

After 25th August 1595 William Courtenay 3rd Earl Devon (age 42) and Jane Hill Countess Devon (age 30) were married. She by marriage Countess Devon. He the son of William Courtenay 2nd Earl Devon and Elizabeth Paulett Countess Devon.

On 23rd June 1630 William Courtenay 3rd Earl Devon (age 77) died at London. He was buried at Powderham Church Powderham, Devon. His son Francis (age 54) de jure 4th Earl Devon. Elizabeth Seymour Countess Devon (age 23) by marriage Countess Devon.

On 3rd June 1638 Francis Courtenay 4th Earl Devon (age 62) died at Berry Pomeroy, Devon. On 3rd June 1638 His son William (age 9) de jure 5th Earl Devon. Margaret Waller Countess Devon by marriage Countess Devon.

On 1st August 1702 William Courtenay 5th Earl Devon (age 73) died. His grandson William (age 26) de jure 6th Earl Devon.

On 6th October 1735 William Courtenay 6th Earl Devon (age 59) died. His son William (age 26) de jure 7th Earl Devon.

On 2nd April 1741 William Courtenay 7th Earl Devon (age 32) and Frances Finch Countess Devon were married. She by marriage Countess Devon. She the daughter of Heneage Finch 2nd Earl Aylesford (age 58) and Mary Fisher Countess Aylesford. He the son of William Courtenay 6th Earl Devon and Anne Bertie Countess Devon.

On 16th May 1762 William Courtenay 7th Earl Devon (age 53) died. His son William (age 19) de jure 8th Earl Devon, 2nd Viscount Courtenay. Frances Clack Countess Devon by marriage Countess Devon.

On 14th October 1788 William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon (age 45) died. His son William (age 20) de jure 9th Earl Devon, 3rd Viscount Courtenay.

In 1831 it was decided that the Earldom of Devon had been created in 1553 for "heirs male forever", rather than to the "heirs male of his body" so William Courtenay 2nd Earl Devon should have succeeded his cousin Edward Courtenay 1st Earl Devon. William "Kitty" Courtenay 9th Earl Devon (age 62) was granted 9th Earl Devon.

On 26th May 1835 William "Kitty" Courtenay 9th Earl Devon (age 66) died at Paris [Map]. His second cousin William (age 57) succeeded 10th Earl Devon. Viscount Courtenay extinct. Henrietta Leslie Pepys Countess Devon (age 57) by marriage Countess Devon.

On 19th March 1859 William Courtenay 10th Earl Devon (age 81) died. His son William (age 51) succeeded 11th Earl Devon. Elizabeth Fortescue Countess Devon (age 57) by marriage Countess Devon.

On 18th November 1888 William Courtenay 11th Earl Devon (age 81) died at Powderham Castle [Map]. His son Edward (age 52) succeeded 12th Earl Devon.

On 15th January 1891 Edward Baldwin Courtenay 12th Earl Devon (age 54) died. His uncle Henry (age 80) succeeded 13th Earl Devon.

In 1904 Henry Hugh Courtenay 13th Earl Devon (age 93) died. His grandson Charles (age 34) succeeded 14th Earl Devon.

In 1927 Charles Pepys Courtenay 14th Earl of Devon (age 57) died. His brother Henry (age 55) succeeded 15th Earl Devon.

Before 19th June 1935 Henry Hugh Courtenay 15th Earl of Devon (age 63) died. His brother Frederick (age 59) succeeded 16th Earl Devon.

On 19th June 1935 Frederick Leslie Courtenay 16th Earl of Devon (age 59) died. His son Charles (age 19) succeeded 17th Earl Devon.

In 1998 Charles Courtenay 17th Earl of Devon (age 82) died. His son Hugh (age 55) succeeded 18th Earl Devon.

On 18th August 2015 Hugh Courtenay 18th Earl of Devon (age 73) died. His son Charles (age 40) succeeded 19th Earl Devon.
