The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 19th September 1862 George Leveson-Gower aka Egerton 2nd Earl Ellesmere (age 39) died. His son Francis (age 15) succeeded 3rd Earl Ellesmere.

On 9th December 1868 Francis Egerton 3rd Earl Ellesmere (age 21) and Katherine Louisa Phipps Countess Ellesmere (age 18) were married. She by marriage Countess Ellesmere. She the daughter of George Phipps 2nd Marquess Normanby (age 49) and Laura Russell Marchioness Normanby (age 52). He the son of George Leveson-Gower aka Egerton 2nd Earl Ellesmere and Mary Louisa Campbell Countess Ellesmere (age 43).

On 13th July 1914 Francis Egerton 3rd Earl Ellesmere (age 67) died. His son John (age 41) succeeded 4th Earl Ellesmere. Violet Lambton Countess Ellesmere (age 34) by marriage Countess Ellesmere.

On 24th August 1944 John Francis Granville Scrope Egerton 4th Earl Ellesmere (age 71) died. His son John (age 29) succeeded 5th Earl Ellesmere. Diana Evelyn Percy (age 26) by marriage Countess Ellesmere.

On 21st September 2000 John Sutherland Egerton 6th Duke Sutherland (age 85) died. His first cousin once removed Francis (age 60) succeeded 7th Duke Sutherland, 7th Marquess Stafford, 6th Earl Ellesmere, 9th Earl Gower, 10th Baron Gower, 14th Baronet Gower of Stittenham in Yorkshire.
