Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

3rd. 1446. John Foix 1st Earl Kendal. Renounced. 1462.

Summary

16th May 1414. John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford [aged 24] created. See Henry V awards his brothers Dukedoms.

14th September 1435. John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford extinct. See Death of John of Bedford.

On 16th May 1414 King Henry V of England [aged 27] created Dukedoms for his two brothers:

Humphrey Lancaster 1st Duke Gloucester [aged 23] was created 1st Duke Gloucester, 1st Earl Pembroke.

John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford [aged 24] was created 1st Duke Bedford, 1st Earl Kendal.

On 14th September 1435 John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford [aged 46] died at Rouen Castle [Map] without legitimate issue. Duke Bedford, Duke Bedford, Earl Kendal and Earl Richmond extinct. Humphrey Lancaster 1st Duke Gloucester [aged 44] became heir to the throne.

Earl Kendal 2nd Creation 1443

Summary

28th August 1443. John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset [aged 40] created.

30th May 1444. John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset extinct.

On 28th August 1443 John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset [aged 40] was created 1st Duke Somerset, 1st Earl Kendal by King Henry VI of England and II of France [aged 21]. Margaret Beauchamp Duchess Somerset [aged 33] by marriage Duchess Somerset.

On 30th May 1444 John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset [aged 41] committed suicide. Suicide not certain but likely. Duke Somerset, Earl Kendal extinct. His brother Edmund [aged 38] succeeded 4th Earl Somerset. Eleanor Beauchamp Duchess Somerset [aged 35] by marriage Countess Somerset.

His only child Margaret Beaufort Countess Richmond aged one was his heir. King Henry VI of England and II of France [aged 22] granted her wardship to William "Jackanapes" de la Pole 1st Duke of Suffolk [aged 47] who married her to his son John de la Pole 2nd Duke of Suffolk [aged 1].

1462. John Foix 1st Earl Kendal renounced.

In 1446 John Foix 1st Earl Kendal [aged 35] was created 1st Earl Kendal. Margaret Kerdeston Countess Foix [aged 20] by marriage Countess Foix.

In 1462 John Foix 1st Earl Kendal [aged 51] renounced his title of Earl Kendal. There is some confusion as to whether he did or not? His descendants in France continued to use the title under the name 'Candale'.
