Biography of Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex 1773-1843

On 8th September 1761 [his father] King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 23) and [his mother] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 17) were married at Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. She by marriage Queen Consort England. He the son of [his grandfather] Frederick Louis Hanover Prince of Wales and [his grandmother] Augusta Saxe Coburg Altenburg (age 41). They were third cousins. He a grandson of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 27th January 1773 Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex was born to King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 34) and Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 28) at Buckingham House [Map].

On 25th February 1773 Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex was christened at Great Council Chamber St James's Palace.

On 4th April 1793 Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 20) and Augusta Murray Duchess Sussex (age 25) were married at Rome, Italy [Map] in secret contrary to the Royal Marriages Act which required him to seek permission before marrying. She the daughter of John Murray 4th Earl Dunmore (age 63) and Charlotte Stewart Countess Dunmore (age 63). He the son of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland (age 54) and Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 48).

On 5th December 1793 Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 20) and [his wife] Augusta Murray Duchess Sussex (age 25) were married at St George's Church, Hanover Square. Their second marriage; again contrary to the Royal Marriages Act.

In 1794 [his daughter] Augustus Frederick d'Este Hanover was born to Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 20) and [his wife] Augusta Murray Duchess Sussex (age 25). She a granddaughter of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland.

In August 1794 Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 21) and Augusta Murray Duchess Sussex (age 26) marriage annulled by the Court of Arches which deemed the marriage contrary to the Royal Marriages Act. The couple continued to live together until 1801 when they separated. She received a grant of £4000 each year and custody of their children.

In 1801 [his daughter] Augusta Emma d'Este Hanover was born to Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 27) and [his former wife] Augusta Murray Duchess Sussex (age 32). She a granddaughter of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 24th November 1801 Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 28) was created 1st Duke Sussex. [his former wife] Augusta Murray Duchess Sussex (age 33) by marriage Duchess Sussex.

In 1803 [his former brother-in-law] George Murray 5th Earl Dunmore (age 40) and Susan Hamilton Countess Dunmore (age 29) were married. She the daughter of Archibald Hamilton 9th Duke Hamilton 6th Duke Brandon (age 62) and Harriet Stewart. He the son of [his former father-in-law] John Murray 4th Earl Dunmore (age 73) and [his former mother-in-law] Charlotte Stewart Countess Dunmore (age 73). They were first cousins.

On 25th February 1809 [his former father-in-law] John Murray 4th Earl Dunmore (age 79) died. His son [his former brother-in-law] George (age 46) succeeded 5th Earl Dunmore. Susan Hamilton Countess Dunmore (age 35) by marriage Countess Dunmore.

On 17th November 1818 [his mother] Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England (age 74) died.

In 1830 Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 56) was elected President of the Royal Society.

On 5th March 1830 [his former wife] Augusta Murray Duchess Sussex (age 62) died at Ramsgate, Kent.

On 2nd May 1831 Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 58) and Cecilia Gore aka Underwood Duchess of Inverness (age 46) were married contrary to the Royal Marriages Act. On the same day she assumed the surname Underwood by Royal Licence. She did not assume the title Duchess of Sussex. She the daughter of Arthur Saunders Gore 2nd Earl Arran and Elizabeth Underwood Countess of Arran. He the son of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland and Charlotte Mecklenburg Strelitz Queen Consort England.

1837. Thomas Phillips (age 66). Portrait of Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 63) sat in the chair of the President of the Royal Society.

On 20th January 1837 [his brother-in-law] Arthur Saunders Gore 3rd Earl Arran (age 75) died without issue. His nephew Philip (age 35) succeeded 4th Earl Arran, 3rd Viscount Sudley of Castle Gore in County Mayo, 3rd Baron Saunders of Deeps in County Wexford, 6th Baronet Gore of Newtown in County Mayo. Elizabeth Marianne Napier Countess Arran (age 17) by marriage Countess Arran.

On 21st April 1843 Prince Augustus Frederick Hanover 1st Duke Sussex (age 70) died at Kensington Palace. He was buried at Kensal Green Cemetery [Map]. Duke Sussex extinct.

In 1873 [his former wife] Cecilia Gore aka Underwood Duchess of Inverness (age 88) died. Duke of Inverness extinct.
