Biography of Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere 1708-1774

Maternal Family Tree: Mary Colley Viscountess Moore and Wilmot 1654

On 24th January 1704 [his father] George Rochfort (age 22) and [his mother] Elizabeth Moore (age 17) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Henry Hamilton Moore 3rd Earl of Drogheda (age 48) and [his grandmother] Mary Cole Countess of Drogheda (age 44).

On 27th March 1708 Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere was born to George Rochfort (age 26) and Elizabeth Moore (age 21).

On 8th July 1730 [his father] George Rochfort (age 48) died.

On 16th December 1731 Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 23) and Elizabeth Tenison were married. She died a year later from smallpox.

In 1732 [his wife] Elizabeth Tenison died of smallpox.

On 7th August 1736 Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 28) and Mary Molesworth were married.

On 30th October 1737 [his daughter] Jane Rochfort Countess Lanesborough was born to Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 29) and [his wife] Mary Molesworth.

On 6th March 1738 Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 29) was created 1st Baron Belfield by King George II of Great Britain and Ireland (age 54).

On 12th October 1738 [his son] George Rochfort 2nd Earl Belvedere was born to Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 30) and [his wife] Mary Molesworth.

Around 1746 Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 37) heard that his wife was being unfaithful with his brother Arthur. He locked her up at his house for the remaining thirty-one years of his life. He took his brother Arthur to court for criminal conversation and was awarded the then huge sum of £2,000 in damages. Arthur, unable to pay, fled the country, but on his return to Ireland, he was thrown into Browne's Castle, (used as Dublin's debtors' prison at that time, and famous for being "the worst prison in the country",) where he died.

On 23rd August 1746, Saturday, Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 38) and Richard Herbert (age 42) engaged in a duel over a long-standing debt of honour at the fields between Tottenham Court Road and Marylebone. Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere was badly wounded. Richard Herbert received a ball in the eye which came out at the back of the skull. He survived albeit with mentaal impairment.

On 5th October 1751 Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 43) was created 1st Viscount Belfield by King George II of Great Britain and Ireland (age 67).

On 22nd June 1754 [his son-in-law] Brinsley Butler 2nd Earl Lanesborough (age 26) and [his daughter] Jane Rochfort Countess Lanesborough (age 16) were married. She by marriage Countess Lanesborough. She the daughter of Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 46) and [his wife] Mary Molesworth. He the son of Humphrey Butler 1st Earl Lanesborough.

On 29th November 1756 Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 48) was created 1st Earl Belvedere by King George II of Great Britain and Ireland (age 73).

All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 13th November 1774 Robert Rochfort 1st Earl of Belvedere (age 66) died. His son [his son] George (age 36) succeeded 2nd Earl Belvedere, 2nd Viscount Belfield, 2nd Baron Belfield.
