Henry Windsor 1st Duke Gloucester 1900-1974

On 6th July 1893 [his father] King George V of the United Kingdom [aged 28] and [his mother] Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England [aged 26] were married at Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. She by marriage Duchess York. He the son of King Edward VII of the United Kingdom [aged 51] and Alexandra of Denmark Queen Consort England [aged 48]. They were second cousin once removed. She a great granddaughter of King George III of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 6th May 1910 [his grandfather] King Edward VII of the United Kingdom [aged 68] died. His son [his father] George [aged 44] succeeded V King of the United Kingdom. [his mother] Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England [aged 42] by marriage Queen Consort England.

In 1912 George Holford [aged 51] and Susannah West Wilson [aged 47] were married at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. [his brother] King George VI of the United Kingdom [aged 16], [his future sister-in-law] Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England [aged 11], [his grandmother] Alexandra of Denmark Queen Consort England [aged 67] and [his aunt] Princess Victoria Windsor [aged 43] were present. The Times reported ... "The aisle was lined by non-commissioned officers of the bridegroom's old regiment the 1st Life Guards. The bride who was given away by her two sons, wore a gown of old Point d'Alençon lace with a train of gold brocade veiled in chiffon. Instead of a hat she wore a headdress of gold lace and pink roses and she carried a bouquet of orchids ... The King and Queen gave Sir George Holford a pair of sleeve links bearing the Royal monogram in diamonds and rubies."

In 1921 Henry Windsor 1st Duke Gloucester [aged 20] was appointed 863rd Knight of the Garter.

On 28th February 1922 [his brother-in-law] Henry Lascelles 6th Earl Harewood [aged 39] and [his sister] Princess Mary Windsor Countess Harewood [aged 24] were married at Westminster Abbey [Map]. His best-man was Major Victor Mackenzie 3rd Baronet [aged 39]. Her bridesmaids included Doris Hilda Gordon-Lennox [aged 25], Mary Cambridge Duchess Beaufort [aged 24], [his future sister-in-law] Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon [aged 21], Princess Maud Duff Countess Southesk [aged 28], Rachel Cavendish [aged 20], Helen Diana Bridgeman [aged 14], Mary Beatrice Thynne Baroness Nunburnholme [aged 18] and Princess May of Teck [aged 16]. The wedding was attending by her father and mother King George V of the United Kingdom [aged 56] and Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England [aged 54]. On 6th October 1929 Henry Ulrick Lascelles 5th Earl Harewood [aged 83] died. His son [his brother-in-law] Henry [aged 47] succeeded 6th Earl Harewood in Yorkshire, 6th Viscount Lascelles, 6th Baron Harewood of Harewood in Yorkshire. [his sister] Princess Mary Windsor Countess Harewood [aged 32] by marriage Countess Harewood in Yorkshire.

On 9th October 1934 [his brother] Prince George Windsor 1st Duke Kent [aged 31] was created 1st Duke Kent.

On 29th November 1934 [his brother] Prince George Windsor 1st Duke Kent [aged 31] and [his sister-in-law] Princess Marina Glücksburg Duchess Kent [aged 27] were married at Westminster Abbey [Map]. She by marriage Duchess Kent. The wedding was followed by a Greek ceremony in the private chapel at Buckingham Palace [Map]. She had eight bridesmaids: her first cousins Princess Irene Glücksburg [aged 30], He the son of [his father] King George V of the United Kingdom [aged 69] and [his mother] Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England [aged 67]. They were second cousins. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King George II of Great Britain and Ireland.

On 6th November 1935 Henry Windsor 1st Duke Gloucester [aged 35] and Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott Duchess Gloucester [aged 33] were married at Buckingham Palace [Map]. She by marriage Duchess Gloucester. She the daughter of John Scott 7th Duke Buccleuch 9th Duke Queensberry [deceased] and Margaret Alice "Molly" Bridgeman Duchess Buccleuch Duchess Queensbury [aged 63]. He the son of King George V of the United Kingdom [aged 70] and Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England [aged 68].

On 20th January 1936 [his father] King George V of the United Kingdom [aged 70] died. His son [his brother] Edward [aged 41] succeeded VIII King of the United Kingdom. Duke York merged with the crown.

On 3rd June 1937 [his brother] King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom [aged 42] and [his sister-in-law] Wallis Warfield aka Simpson Duchess of Windsor [aged 40] were married at the Château de Candé. No member of his family attended. He the son of [his father] King George V of the United Kingdom and [his mother] Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England [aged 70].

The Duke [aged 37] and [his wife] Duchess of Gloucester [aged 36] have sent a silver condiments set to Mr. John Nevill, Life Guards, elder son of Major [aged 54] and Mrs. Guy Larnach-Nevill [aged 47], of Uckfield House, and Miss Patricia Harrison, daughter of Major and the Hon. Mrs. J. F. Harrison, of Kings Walden Bury, Hitchin, whose marriage took place yesterday at St. Paul's, Knightsbridge. The Rev. G. S. Shackleford officiated, assisted by the Rev. E. C. Dunford. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a gown of ivory-tinted panne velvet, embossed with sprays of silver flowers. The bodice was fashioned with a square neckline and long sleeves, slightly full at the shoulder, and the square train was lined with silver tissue. A headdress of silver-tipped doves' wings surmounted her long tulle veil, and she carried a spray of mixed white flowers. A retinue of six little girls and four pages folowed the bride. They were Penelope Harrison (sister of the bride), the Hon. Clare Beckett, Marye Pepys (niece of the bridegroom), Margaret Rosselli, Caroline Bury, Joanna Spencer, Hugh Lawson (cousin of the bride), David Myddelton (cousin of the bridegroom), Thomas Pilkington (nephew of the bride), and Charles Smith-Bingham. The pages wore replicas of the uniform of the Life Guards of the early nineteenth century, and the little girls wore long frocks of silver lame, the high-waisted bodices cut with short, puff sleeves, and square necks. They wore caps of silver lame, trimmed with white fur, and carried white fur muffs. Lord Roderic Pratt [aged 22], Life Guards, was best man, and there was a guard of honour from the same regiment. The Hon. Mrs. J. F. Harrison afterwards held a reception at 28, Grosvenor Square, W1. The honeymoon wil be spent in Switzerland.

Before 25th April 1939 Thomas William Anson [aged 26] and Anne Ferelith Bowes-Lyon [aged 21] were married at St Margaret's Church, Westminster [Map]. The wedding was attended by the [his brother] King [aged 43] and [his sister-in-law] Queen [aged 38], Princesses [his niece] Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom [aged 13] and Princess Margaret [aged 8] - see Pathe. He the son of Thomas Edward Anson 4th Earl Lichfield [aged 55] and Evelyn Maud Keppel Countess Lichfield [aged 52].

In 1941 Hugh Molyneux 7th Earl of Sefton [aged 42] and Josephine Gwynne Armstrong Countess Sefton [aged 38]. Whilst he was a good friend of the [his brother] Duke of Windsor [aged 46], his wife was a good friend of the Duke's wife [his sister-in-law] Wallis Warfield aka Simpson Duchess of Windsor [aged 44]. Josephine Gwynne Armstrong Countess Sefton by marriage Countess Sefton.

On 26th April 1943 Alastair Windsor 2nd Duke Connaught and Strathearn [aged 28] died at Ottawa. He was buried at St Ninian's Chapel, Mar Lodge Estate. Duke Connaught and Strathearn extinct. The diaries of Sir Alan Lascelles [aged 56], [his brother] King George VI's [aged 47] private secretary, published in 2006, recorded that both the regiment and Athlone had rejected him as incompetent, and he fell out of a window when drunk and perished of hypothermia overnight.

On 26th August 1944 [his son] Richard Alexander Walter Windsor 2nd Duke Gloucester was born to Henry Windsor 1st Duke Gloucester [aged 44] and [his wife] Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott Duchess Gloucester [aged 42]. He a grandson of King George V of the United Kingdom.

On 21st October 1947 David Allan Bethell 5th Baron Westbury [aged 25] and Ursula James [aged 23] were married at St Martin in the Fields Church [Map]. Princesses [his niece] Elizabeth [aged 21] and Margaret [aged 17] attended the wedding, as did the Duke [aged 47] and Duchess [aged 45] of Gloucester.

On 29th September 1949 [his nephew] George Henry Hubert Lascelles 7th Earl Harewood [aged 26] and Marion Stein Countess Harewood [aged 22] were married at St Mark's Church North Audley Street. [his brother] King George VI of the United Kingdom [aged 53], his uncle, [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon Queen Consort England [aged 49], Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England [aged 82] Princess Mary Windsor Countess Harewood [aged 52], his mother, and other members of the Royal family attended the wedding. He the son of Henry Lascelles 6th Earl Harewood and Princess Mary Windsor Countess Harewood.

Marion Stein Countess Harewood: On 18th October 1926 she was born at Vienna [Map]. On 6th March 2014 she died.

In 24th March 1953 [his mother] Victoria Mary Teck Queen Consort England [aged 85] died.

On 28th May 1972 [his brother] King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom [aged 77] died. He was buried at Royal Burial Ground Frogmore Estate Home Park Windsor, Berkshire.

On 4th October 1973 [his brother-in-law] Walter Scott 8th Duke Buccleuch 10th Duke Queensberry [aged 78] died. His son Walter [aged 50] succeeded 9th Duke Buccleuch, 11th Duke Queensberry, 9th Earl Doncaster, 9th Baron Scott of Tynedale. Jane McNeill Duchess of Buccleuch [aged 43] by marriage Duchess Buccleuch.

On 10th June 1974 Henry Windsor 1st Duke Gloucester [aged 74] died. His son Richard [aged 29] succeeded 2nd Duke Gloucester. Memorials at St Andrews Church, Barnwell [Map] to Henry Windsor 1st Duke Gloucester who lived nearby and worshipped at the church.

Richard Alexander Walter Windsor 2nd Duke Gloucester: On 26th August 1944 he was born to Henry Windsor 1st Duke Gloucester and Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott Duchess Gloucester. He a grandson of King George V of the United Kingdom.

On 29th October 2004 [his former wife] Alice Christabel Montagu-Douglas-Scott Duchess Gloucester died.
