She by marriage Countess Gloucester, Countess Hertford. The difference in their ages was 20 years. She the daughter of [his grandfather] William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke [aged 71] and [his grandmother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke [aged 45]. He the son of Richard Clare 3rd Earl Hertford and Amice Fitzrobert Countess Hertford. They were third cousins. He a great x 2 grandson of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England.

On 4th August 1222 Richard de Clare 6th Earl Gloucester 5th Earl Hertford was born to Gilbert Clare 5th Earl Gloucester 4th Earl Hertford [aged 42] and Isabel Marshal Countess Cornwall, Gloucester and Hertford [aged 21]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England.

On 25th October 1230 [his father] Gilbert Clare 5th Earl Gloucester 4th Earl Hertford [aged 50] died. His son Richard [aged 8] succeeded 6th Earl Gloucester, 5th Earl Hertford, 8th Lord Clare, 2nd Lord Glamorgan.

On 30th March 1231 [his step-father] Richard of Cornwall 1st Earl Cornwall [aged 22] and [his mother] Isabel Marshal Countess Cornwall, Gloucester and Hertford [aged 30] were married at Fawley, Lambourn. She by marriage Countess Cornwall. She the daughter of [his grandfather] William Marshal 1st Earl Pembroke and [his grandmother] Isabel Clare Countess Pembroke. He the son of King John of England and Isabella of Angoulême Queen Consort England [aged 43]. They were fifth cousins.

About the same time, the king's anger was again kindled against the earl of Kent, [his future father-in-law] Hubert de Burgh [aged 67], because Richard, earl of Gloucester [aged 14], still a boy, under the king's care, secretly married Earl Hubert's daughter [his future wife] Margaret [aged 15], without his, the king's, permission or connivance. For he had determined (as it was stated) to unite the said youth, the earl of Gloucester, together with his county and all his honours, to a young lady, a near relative of William, bishop elect of Valentia, a native of Provence. The king's anger was, however, at length set at rest by the intercession of a great many people, and on Hubert's declaring that he had not been aware of it, and that it had not been done by him, and on his promising a sum of money to the king. On 17th January 1240 [his mother] Isabel Marshal Countess Cornwall, Gloucester and Hertford [aged 39] died.

On 2nd September 1243 [his son] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford was born to Richard de Clare 6th Earl Gloucester 5th Earl Hertford [aged 21] and [his wife] Maud Lacy Countess Gloucester and Hertford [aged 20]. He married (1) 1253 his half fifth cousin Alice or Alix Lusignan Countess Gloucester and Hertford, daughter of Hugh XI of Lusignan VI Count of La Marche II Count Angoulême and Yolande Capet Countess Lusignan, La Marche and Angoulême, and had issue (2) 2nd May 1290 his half fifth cousin Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford, daughter of King Edward I of England and Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England, and had issue.

Around 1245 [his son] Thomas de Clare was born to Richard de Clare 6th Earl Gloucester 5th Earl Hertford [aged 22] and [his wife] Maud Lacy Countess Gloucester and Hertford [aged 21] at Tonbridge, Kent [Map]. She the daughter of Hugh XI of Lusignan VI Count of La Marche II Count Angoulême and Yolande Capet Countess Lusignan, La Marche and Angoulême [aged 34]. He the son of Richard de Clare 6th Earl Gloucester 5th Earl Hertford [aged 30] and Maud Lacy Countess Gloucester and Hertford [aged 29]. They were half fifth cousins. Around 1255 [his daughter] Rohese Clare Baroness Mowbray was born to Richard de Clare 6th Earl Gloucester 5th Earl Hertford [aged 32] and [his wife] Maud Lacy Countess Gloucester and Hertford [aged 31]. On 14th July 1262 Richard de Clare 6th Earl Gloucester 5th Earl Hertford [aged 39] died. His son Gilbert [aged 18] succeeded 7th Earl Gloucester, 6th Earl Hertford, 9th Lord Clare, 3rd Lord Glamorgan. Alice or Alix Lusignan Countess Gloucester and Hertford [aged 26] by marriage Countess Gloucester, Countess Hertford.

On 10th March 1289 [his former wife] Maud Lacy Countess Gloucester and Hertford [aged 66] died.

William de de Clare was fatally poisoned by his steward whilst having breakfast with his brother Richard, who was also poisoned but survived, and Prince Edward.
