On 23rd January 1544 [her grandfather] William Fitzalan 11th or 18th Earl of Arundel [aged 68] died. He was buried at Arundel Castle [Map]. His son [her father] Henry [aged 31] succeeded 12th or 19th Earl Arundel, 9th Baron Maltravers, 9th Baron Arundel. [her step-mother] Mary Arundell Countess Arundel by marriage Countess Arundel.
Around 1552 [her brother-in-law] John Lumley 1st Baron Lumley [aged 19] and [her sister] Jane Fitzalan Baroness Lumley [aged 15] were married. She by marriage Baroness Lumley. She the daughter of [her father] Henry Fitzalan 12th or 19th Earl of Arundel [aged 39] and [her mother] Katherine Grey. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward IV of England.
On 25th August 1554 Thomas Howard 3rd Duke of Norfolk [aged 81] died at Kenninghall, Norfolk. He was buried at Church of St Michael the Archangel, Framlingham [Map]. His grandson [her future husband] Thomas [aged 18] succeeded 4th Duke Norfolk, 3rd Earl Surrey.
In 1556 Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk [aged 19] and Mary Fitzalan Duchess Norfolk [aged 16] were married. She by marriage Duchess Norfolk, Countess Surrey. She the daughter of Henry Fitzalan 12th or 19th Earl of Arundel [aged 43] and Katherine Grey. They were second cousin once removed.
On 28th June 1557 [her son] Philip Howard 13th or 20th Earl of Arundel was born to [her husband] Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk [aged 21] and Mary Fitzalan Duchess Norfolk [aged 17] in the Arundel House [Map]. His mother died eight weeks later. He was baptised with the Royal Family present. Named after his godfather Philip "The Prudent" II King Spain [aged 30]. He married 1571 his half third cousin once removed Anne Dacre Countess Arundel, daughter of Thomas Dacre 4th Baron Dacre Gilsland 8th Baron Greystoke and Elizabeth Leybourne Duchess Norfolk, and had issue.
Around 23rd August 1557 Mary Fitzalan Duchess Norfolk [aged 17] died from childbirth at Arundel House [Map].
The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy
The Gesta Normannorum Ducum [The Deeds of the Dukes of Normandy] is a landmark medieval chronicle tracing the rise and fall of the Norman dynasty from its early roots through the pivotal events surrounding the Norman Conquest of England. William’s history emphasizes the legitimacy, military prowess, and governance of the Norman line, framing their expansion, including the conquest of England, as both divinely sanctioned and noble in purpose. Later chroniclers such as Orderic Vitalis and Robert of Torigni continued the history, extending the coverage into the 12th century, providing broader context on ducal rule and its impact. Today this classic work remains a foundational source for understanding Norman identity, medieval statesmanship, and the historical forces that reshaped England and Western Europe between 800AD and 1100AD.

The furst day of September at after-none be[ried the] yonge duches of Northfoke [deceased], and the chyrche and the plasse and the strett [hangyd with black] and armes; and be iij of the cloke she was browth to [the church with] a c morners; and her grasse [grace] had a canepe [canopy] of blake [velvet, with] iiij stayffes, borne ower her; and many baners, and baner[-rolls borne ab]owt here; and the byshope of London [aged 57] in ys cope and ys myter [on his head,] and all the qwyre of Powlles; and with ij grett whytt branchys, and xij dosen stayffes torchys; and viij haroldes of armes; and my [[her sister] lady Lumley [aged 20]] the cheyff morner, and mony lordes and knyghtes, and gentyll lades and gentyll-women.
Note. P. 149. Death of the duchess of Norfolk. She had not recovered from the birth of her first and only child. "This Mary duches of Norffolk, late wyff to the right highe and myghty prynce Thomas duke of Norffolk, erl of Surrey and Waren, lord Mowbray, Segrave and Brusse, and erl marshall of England, departed on Wensday the 25. of August at th'erl of Arundell her father's howsse, called Arundell place in St. Clementes parishe called the Danes withowt temple barre in London, 1557, in the 4. and 5. of kyng Phelyp and queen Mary, and was beryed the fyrst of Septembre next foloing in the parish churche of St. Clementes the Danes." In 1567 [her former husband] Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk [aged 30] and Elizabeth Leybourne Duchess Norfolk [aged 31] were married. She by marriage Duchess Norfolk, Countess Surrey.
On 2nd June 1572 [her former husband] Thomas Howard 4th Duke of Norfolk [aged 36] was executed for his involvement in the Ridolphi Plot. He was buried at St Peter ad Vincula Church, Tower of London [Map]. Duke Norfolk, Earl Surrey, Baron Mowbray, Baron Segrave forfeit.
