Edward Stanley and Lucy Percy were married. She the daughter of Thomas Percy 7th Earl of Northumberland and Anne Somerset Countess Northumberland. They were fourth cousins.

The two epitaphs at each end of the monument are believed to have been written by William Shakespeare:

Ask who lyes heare but do not weep He is not dead he doth but sleep This stoney register is for his bones His fame is more perpetual than these stones And his own goodness with himself being gone Shall lyve when earthlie monument is none

Not monumental stone preserve our Fame Nor sky aspyring pyramids our name The memory of Him for whom this stands Shall outlive marble and defacers hands When all to tyme's consumption shall be geaven Standley for whom this stands shall be in Heaven

Thomas Stanley: he was born to Edward Stanley 3rd Earl of Derby and Dorothy Howard Countess Derby. In or before 1563 Thomas Stanley and Margaret Vernon were married. He the son of Edward Stanley 3rd Earl of Derby and Dorothy Howard Countess Derby. They were third cousin once removed. In 1576 Thomas Stanley died.

Margaret Vernon: In 1540 she was born to George Vernon "King of the Peak" and Margaret Tailboys. In 1610 Margaret Vernon died.

In or before 1563 [his father] Thomas Stanley and [his mother] Margaret Vernon [aged 22] were married. He the son of [his grandfather] Edward Stanley 3rd Earl of Derby [aged 53] and [his grandmother] Dorothy Howard Countess Derby [aged 51]. They were third cousin once removed.

Around 1563 Edward Stanley was born to Thomas Stanley and Margaret Vernon [aged 23].

In 1576 [his father] Thomas Stanley died.

In 1600 [his daughter] Venetia Stanley was born to Edward Stanley [aged 37] and Lucy Percy at Tong Castle, Shropshire [Map]. She married 1625 Kenelm Digby and had issue.

In 1610 [his mother] Margaret Vernon [aged 70] died.

In 1613 Edward Stanley [aged 50] sold Tong Castle, Shropshire [Map] to Thomas Harries aka Harris 1st Baronet [aged 63].

In 1613 Thomas Harries aka Harris 1st Baronet [aged 63] purchased Tong Castle, Shropshire [Map] from Edward Stanley [aged 50].

In 1625 [his son-in-law] Kenelm Digby [aged 22] and [his daughter] Venetia Stanley [aged 25] were married.

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

In 1632 Edward Stanley [aged 69] died.

[his daughter] Frances Stanley Lady Fortescue was born to Edward Stanley and Lucy Percy. She married her second cousin John Fortescue 1st Baronet and had issue.
