Biography of Nicholas Slanning 1st Baronet 1643-1691

In 1661 Nicholas Slanning 1st Baronet (age 17) was knighted.

In 1662 Nicholas Slanning 1st Baronet (age 18) and Anne Carteret were married.

Evelyn's Diary. 04 Nov 1662. I was invited to the wedding of the [his wife] daughter of [his father-in-law] Sir George Carteret (age 52) (The Treasurer of the Navy and King's Vice-Chamberlain), married to Sir Nicholas Slaning (age 19), Knight of the Bath, by the Bishop of London (age 64), in the Savoy chapel [Map]; after which was an extraordinary feast.

In 1663 Nicholas Slanning 1st Baronet (age 19) was created 1st Baronet Slanning of Maristow.

On 31 Jul 1665 [his brother-in-law] Philip Carteret (age 24) and Jemima Montagu were married. She the daughter of Edward Montagu 1st Earl Sandwich (age 40) and Jemima Crew Countess Sandwich (age 40).

In 1668 [his wife] Anne Carteret died.

1672 Battle of Solebay

On 28 May 1672 [his former brother-in-law] Philip Carteret (age 31) and Winston Churchill were killed at Solebay, Southwold [Map].

Edward Montagu 1st Earl Sandwich (age 46) was killed. His son Edward Montagu 2nd Earl Sandwich (age 24) succeeded 2nd Earl Sandwich.

George Legge 1st Baron Dartmouth (age 25) fought.

Charles Harbord (age 32) was killed. The inscription on his. Monument in Westminster Abbey [Map] reads ... Sr. Charles Harbord Knt. his Majesties Surveyor General, and First Lieutenant of the Royall James, under the most noble and illustrious captain Edward, Earle of Sandwich (age 46), Vice Admirall of England, which after a terrible fight maintained to admiration against a squadron of the Holland fleet for above six houres, neere the Suffolk coast, having put off two fireships, at last being utterly dissabled and few of her men remaining unhurt, was by a third unfortunately set on fire: but he (though he swam well) neglected to save himselfe as some did, and out of the perfect love to that worthy lord (whom for many yeares he had constantly accompanyed in all his honourable imployments, and in all the engagements of the former warr) dyed with him at the age of XXXIII, much bewailed of his father whom he never offended, and much beloved of all for his knowne piety, vertue, loyalty, fortitude and fidelity.

Captain John Cox was killed in action.

Admiral John Holmes (age 32) fought as commander of Rupert.

In 1673 Nicholas Slanning 1st Baronet (age 29) and Mary Henley were married.

After 1673 [his son] Andrew Slanning 2nd Baronet was born to Nicholas Slanning 1st Baronet (age 29) and [his wife] Mary Henley.

On 17 May 1675 [his father-in-law] Andrew Henley 1st Baronet (age 53) died. His son [his brother-in-law] Robert Henley 2nd Baronet (age 20) succeeded 2nd Baronet Henley of Henley in Somerset.

On 07 Aug 1681 [his brother-in-law] Robert Henley 2nd Baronet (age 26) died unmarried. His brother [his brother-in-law] Andrew Henley 3rd Baronet (age 25) succeeded 3rd Baronet Henley of Henley in Somerset.

In Apr 1691 Nicholas Slanning 1st Baronet (age 47) died. His son [his son] Andrew Slanning 2nd Baronet (age 18) succeeded 2nd Baronet Slanning of Maristow.

James Modyford and [his daughter] Elizabeth Slanning were married.

[his daughter] Elizabeth Slanning was born to Nicholas Slanning 1st Baronet and Mary Henley.
