Biography of Louis "Strict" Wittelsbach II Duke Upper Bavaria 1229-1294

Paternal Family Tree: Wittelsbach

Around 1222 [his father] Otto "Illustrious" Wittelsbach II Duke Bavaria (age 15) and [his mother] Agnes Welf Duchess Bavaria (age 21) were married. He the son of [his grandfather] Louis Wittelsbach I Duke Bavaria (age 48) and [his grandmother] Ludmilla Bohemia Duchess Bavaria.

On 13th April 1229 Louis "Strict" Wittelsbach II Duke Upper Bavaria was born to [his father] Otto "Illustrious" Wittelsbach II Duke Bavaria (age 23) and [his mother] Agnes Welf Duchess Bavaria (age 28) at Heidelburg. He a great x 2 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

On 15th September 1231 [his grandfather] Louis Wittelsbach I Duke Bavaria (age 57) was murdered. His son [his father] Otto (age 25) succeeded II Duke Bavaria. [his mother] Agnes Welf Duchess Bavaria (age 30) by marriage Duchess Bavaria.

In 1250 [his brother] Henry Wittelsbach I Duke Lower Bavaria I Duke Bavaria (age 14) and [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Duchess Bavaria (age 14) were married. She by marriage Duchess Bavaria. He the son of [his father] Otto "Illustrious" Wittelsbach II Duke Bavaria (age 43) and [his mother] Agnes Welf Duchess Bavaria (age 49).

On 29th September 1253 [his father] Otto "Illustrious" Wittelsbach II Duke Bavaria (age 47) died. His son Louis (age 24) succeeded II Duke Upper Bavaria, Count Palatine of the Rhine.

In 1254 [his brother] Henry Wittelsbach I Duke Lower Bavaria I Duke Bavaria (age 18) succeeded I Duke Lower Bavaria.

On 2nd August 1254 Louis "Strict" Wittelsbach II Duke Upper Bavaria (age 25) and Maria Reginar Duchess Bavaria (age 28) were married. She by marriage Duchess Bavaria. She the daughter of Henry Reginar II Duke Brabant and Marie Swabia Duchess Brabant. He the son of Otto "Illustrious" Wittelsbach II Duke Bavaria and Agnes Welf Duchess Bavaria (age 53). They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Stephen I England.

On 16th January 1255 Guy Chatillon III Count Saint Pol (age 28) and [his sister-in-law] Matilda Reginar Countess Saint Pol (age 31) were married. She the daughter of Henry Reginar II Duke Brabant and Marie Swabia Duchess Brabant. He the son of Hugh Chatillon I Count Blois V Count Saint Pol and Mary Avesnes. They were fourth cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King William "Conqueror" I of England. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Stephen I England.

Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

In 1261 [his daughter] Maria Wittelsbach was born to Louis "Strict" Wittelsbach II Duke Upper Bavaria (age 31) and [his wife] Louis Anna Glogau Duchess Bavaria. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

In 1262 [his daughter] Agnes Wittelsbach was born to Louis "Strict" Wittelsbach II Duke Upper Bavaria (age 32) and [his wife] Louis Anna Glogau Duchess Bavaria. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England. She died aged seven in 1269.

In 1267 [his mother] Agnes Welf Duchess Bavaria (age 66) died.

On 13th September 1267 [his son] Ludwig Wittelsbach was born to Louis "Strict" Wittelsbach II Duke Upper Bavaria (age 38) and [his wife] Louis Anna Glogau Duchess Bavaria. He a great x 3 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

In 1269 [his daughter] Agnes Wittelsbach (age 7) died.

On 24th October 1273 Louis "Strict" Wittelsbach II Duke Upper Bavaria (age 44) and Matilda Habsburg Duchess Bavaria (age 20) were married. She by marriage Duchess Bavaria. The difference in their ages was 23 years. She the daughter of Rudolph I King Romans (age 55) and Gertrude Hohenburg (age 48). He the son of Otto "Illustrious" Wittelsbach II Duke Bavaria and Agnes Welf Duchess Bavaria. They were fourth cousin twice removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

In 1274 [his brother-in-law] Albert Habsburg I Duke Austria (age 18) and Elizabeth Carinthia Duchess Austria were married. She by marriage Duchess Austria. He the son of [his father-in-law] Rudolph I King Romans (age 55) and [his mother-in-law] Gertrude Hohenburg (age 49).

On 4th October 1274 [his son] Rudolf Wittelsbach I Duke Bavaria was born to Louis "Strict" Wittelsbach II Duke Upper Bavaria (age 45) and [his wife] Matilda Habsburg Duchess Bavaria (age 21). He a great x 3 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 1st April 1282 [his son] Louis Wittelsbach IV Holy Roman Emperor was born to Louis "Strict" Wittelsbach II Duke Upper Bavaria (age 52) and [his wife] Matilda Habsburg Duchess Bavaria (age 29). He a great x 3 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England. He married (1) 1308 Beatrix Świdnica Holy Roman Empress and had issue (2) 1324 his third cousin three times removed Margaret Hainaut Holy Roman Empress, daughter of William of Avesnes I Count Hainaut III Count Avesnes III Count Holland II Count Zeeland and Joan Valois Countess Zeeland Holland Avesnes and Hainaut, and had issue.

In 1289 [his brother-in-law] Rudolf Habsburg II Duke Austria (age 19) and Agnes Přemyslid Duchess Austria (age 19) were married. She by marriage Duchess Austria. She the daughter of Ottokar "Iron King" II King Bohemia and Kunigunda Rostislavna Přemyslovna. He the son of [his father-in-law] Rudolph I King Romans (age 70) and [his mother-in-law] Gertrude Hohenburg.

On 3rd February 1290 [his brother] Henry Wittelsbach I Duke Lower Bavaria I Duke Bavaria (age 54) died. His son [his nephew] Otto (age 28) succeeded III Duke Bavaria.

On 10th May 1290 [his brother-in-law] Rudolf Habsburg II Duke Austria (age 20) died at Prague.

On 23rd November 1290 [his son] Ludwig Wittelsbach (age 23) was killed in a tournament at Nuremburg.

On 15th July 1291 [his father-in-law] Rudolph I King Romans (age 73) died at Speyer. He was buried at Speyer Cathedral. His son [his brother-in-law] Albert (age 36) succeeded I Duke Austria.

On 2nd February 1294 Louis "Strict" Wittelsbach II Duke Upper Bavaria (age 64) died at Heidelburg. His son Rudolf (age 19) succeeded Rudolph I Duke Bavaria.

Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness.
