Antiquities de la Gaule Belgique is in Late Medieval Books.
In the year 1462, René of Anjou, King of Sicily, urged and begged the King of France, Louis XI, who was his nephew and the son of his sister, Marie of Anjou, wife of Charles VII. And so the children of the said King René—namely John, Duke of Calabria and Lorraine, and the said Margaret, Queen of England in exile were first cousins to King Louis XI. Through this connection, Louis gave assistance to the said Queen of England and to her young son Edward, Prince of Wales, who were at that time in France. He dispatched, under the command of Sir Pierre de Brézé, Seneschal of Normandy, an army of two thousand combatants, whom he sent to England against Edward, the usurper of the said realm. They departed from Normandy with the Queen and her son, and made their way toward Scotland, from there entering the kingdom of England, and at first made some conquests, while awaiting the Duke of Somerset, who had preceded them and gone into Scotland to raise troops so he could join them as he had promised.
But he failed to keep his promise, and did not come; on the contrary, he made an agreement with King Edward, their enemy. And so, the French, the said Queen, and her son were forced to return to France without accomplishing anything. As a result, soon after, King Henry VI, her husband, who was rather ineffective and had secretly taken refuge in certain fortresses near the Scottish border while awaiting French support, was captured and fell into the hands of Edward and the Earl of Warwick, who sent him to the Tower of London.
They executed several great English lords who had supported his cause, all due to the betrayal of the Duke of Somerset, his cousin, who broke his oath. And thus Edward remained king of England, keeping Henry VI imprisoned, while the said Margaret and her son remained in France, awaiting better fortune.
Soon after, around mid-July in the year 1470, King Louis XI summoned King René of Sicily to meet him in the city of Angers, and to bring there his daughter Margaret, Queen of England, together with her son, the young Edward, Prince of Wales, who had been expelled from England, as we have said. These mother and son, since their last return to France, which had been in the year 1463, had been residing most often in the Duchy of Bar, which was the true patrimony of King René, in a castle called Kœur, near the town of Saint-Mihiel, in our diocese of Verdun. They presented themselves at the king's command in Angers, together with the said King René. During that same time, on the last day of July, the Queen of France, being at the château of Amboise, gave birth to a beautiful son, named Charles, who would later become King of France. His godfathers were: Monsieur Charles de Bourbon, Cardinal and Archbishop of Lyon, and Edward, Prince of Wales, son of the said Margaret of Anjou; his godmother was Lady Jeanne of France.
