Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

He the son of William Anne Capell 4th Earl Essex and Harriet Bladen Countess Essex [aged 67].

On 27th January 1803 Arthur Algernon Capell 6th Earl Essex was born to [his father] John Thomas Capell [aged 34] and [his mother] Caroline Paget [aged 29].

In 1819 [his father] John Thomas Capell [aged 50] died.

On 14th July 1825 Arthur Algernon Capell 6th Earl Essex [aged 22] and Caroline Janetta Beauclerk Countess Essex [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Countess Essex. She the daughter of William Beauclerk 8th Duke St Albans [aged 58] and Maria Janetta Nelthorpe Duchess St Albans. They were fourth cousin once removed. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 17th July 1825 [his father-in-law] William Beauclerk 8th Duke St Albans [aged 58] died. His son [his brother-in-law] William [aged 24] succeeded 9th Duke St Albans, 9th Earl Burford, 9th Baron Heddington, 6th Baron Vere of Hanworth in Middlesex.

On 22nd July 1826 [his son] Arthur de Vere Capell was born to Arthur Algernon Capell 6th Earl Essex [aged 23] and [his wife] Caroline Janetta Beauclerk Countess Essex [aged 22]. He a great x 4 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married 1853 Emma Martha Meux, daughter of Henry Meux 1st Baronet and Elizabeth-Mary Smith Lady Meux.

On 16th June 1827 [his brother-in-law] William Beauclerk 9th Duke St Albans [aged 26] and Harriet Mellon Duchess St Albans [aged 49] were married. She by marriage Duchess St Albans. The difference in their ages was 23 years; she, unusually, being older than him. He the son of [his father-in-law] William Beauclerk 8th Duke St Albans and Maria Janetta Nelthorpe Duchess St Albans.

On 23rd April 1839 [his uncle] George Capell Coningsbury 5th Earl Essex [aged 81] died. His nephew Arthur [aged 36] succeeded 6th Earl Essex, 7th Baron Capell Hadham.

On 29th May 1839 [his brother-in-law] William Beauclerk 9th Duke St Albans [aged 38] and Elizabeth Catherine Gubbins Duchess St Albans [aged 21] were married at Church of St Mary the Virgin Harby, Leicestershire. She by marriage Duchess St Albans. William Beauclerk 9th Duke St Albans donated a new clock, a bible, a prayer book, and £30 with the rector to be invested for the poor. He the son of [his father-in-law] William Beauclerk 8th Duke St Albans and Maria Janetta Nelthorpe Duchess St Albans.

On 22nd August 1862 [his wife] Caroline Janetta Beauclerk Countess Essex [aged 58] died.

On 11th September 1892 Arthur Algernon Capell 6th Earl Essex [aged 89] died. His grandson George [aged 34] succeeded 7th Earl Essex, 8th Baron Capell Hadham.
