Biography of Arthur Chichester 1st Marquess Donegal 1739-1799

Before 13th June 1739 [his father] John Chichester (age 33) and [his mother] Elizabeth Newdigate were married. He the son of [his grandfather] Arthur Chichester 3rd Earl Donegal and [his grandmother] Catherine Forbes (age 49).

On 13th June 1739 Arthur Chichester 1st Marquess Donegal was born to [his father] John Chichester (age 33) and [his mother] Elizabeth Newdigate.

In 1757 [his uncle] Arthur Chichester 4th Earl Donegal (age 62) died. His nephew Arthur (age 17) succeeded 5th Earl Donegal.

On 11th September 1761 Arthur Chichester 1st Marquess Donegal (age 22) and Anne Hamilton Countess Donegal (age 23) were married. She by marriage Countess Donegal. She the daughter of James Hamilton 5th Duke Hamilton 2nd Duke Brandon and Anne Spencer Duchess Hamilton Duchess Brandon (age 51).

On 25th May 1765 [his brother-in-law] Archibald Hamilton 9th Duke Hamilton 6th Duke Brandon (age 24) and Harriet Stewart were married. She the daughter of Alexander Stewart 6th Earl Galloway (age 71) and Catherine Cochrane Countess Galloway (age 56). He the son of James Hamilton 5th Duke Hamilton 2nd Duke Brandon and [his mother-in-law] Anne Spencer Duchess Hamilton Duchess Brandon (age 55). They were half fifth cousin once removed.

On 14th August 1769 [his son] George Chichester 2nd Marquess Donegal was born to Arthur Chichester 1st Marquess Donegal (age 30) and [his wife] Anne Hamilton Countess Donegal (age 31) at St James'. He married before 1818 Anna May.

On 3rd May 1771 [his son] Arthur Chichester was born to Arthur Chichester 1st Marquess Donegal (age 31) and [his wife] Anne Hamilton Countess Donegal (age 33).

On 20th April 1775 [his son] Spencer Stanley Chichester was born to Arthur Chichester 1st Marquess Donegal (age 35) and [his wife] Anne Hamilton Countess Donegal (age 37). He married before 8th January 1797 Anne Harriet Stewart, daughter of John Stewart 7th Earl Galloway and Anne Dashwood Countess Galloway, and had issue.

On 11th November 1780 [his wife] Anne Hamilton Countess Donegal (age 42) died.

On 24th April 1787 [his daughter] Elizabeth Juliana Chichester died.

On 11th September 1788 [his son] Arthur Chichester (age 17) died.

On 24th October 1788 Arthur Chichester 1st Marquess Donegal (age 49) and Charlotte Spencer were married. She died less than a year later.

On 19th September 1789 [his wife] Charlotte Spencer died at Fisherwick, Staffordshire.

In October 1790 Arthur Chichester 1st Marquess Donegal (age 51) and Barbara Godfey Marchioness Donegal were married.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
