The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Biography of Arthur Wellesley 2nd Duke Wellington 1807-1884

On 10th April 1806 [his father] Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke Wellington (age 36) and [his mother] Catherine "Kitty" Pakenham Duchess Wellington (age 33) were married at Dublin [Map]. He the son of [his grandfather] Garrett Wellesley 1st Earl Mornington and [his grandmother] Anne Hill Countess Mornington (age 63).

On 3rd February 1807 Arthur Wellesley 2nd Duke Wellington was born to Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke Wellington (age 37) and Catherine "Kitty" Pakenham Duchess Wellington (age 34) at Harley Street Marylebone.

On 24th April 1831 [his mother] Catherine "Kitty" Pakenham Duchess Wellington (age 58) died.

In 1839 Arthur Wellesley 2nd Duke Wellington (age 31) and Elizabeth Hay Duchess Wellington (age 18) were married. She the daughter of George Hay 8th Marquess Tweedale (age 51) and Susan Montagu Marchioness Teviotdale (age 38). He the son of Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke Wellington (age 69) and Catherine "Kitty" Pakenham Duchess Wellington.

On 14th September 1852 [his father] Arthur Wellesley 1st Duke Wellington (age 83) died at Deal Castle [Map]. His son Arthur (age 45) succeeded 2nd Duke Wellington, 2nd Viscount Wellington of Talavera. [his wife] Elizabeth Hay Duchess Wellington (age 31) by marriage Duchess Wellington.

George Gammon Adams (age 31) took the death mask of the Duke of Wellington, the marble bust he executed from it being highly regarded by the Duke's heirs.

1858 Appointment of Garter Knights

In 1858 Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom (age 38) appointed five Knights of the Garter:

720th Frederick III King Prussia (age 26).

721st Arthur Wellesley 2nd Duke Wellington (age 50).

722nd William Cavendish 7th Duke Devonshire (age 49).

723rd King Pedro V of Portugal (age 20).

724th The Prince of Wales (age 16).

On 8th October 1873 [his brother-in-law] Arthur Hay 9th Marquess Tweedale (age 48) and Julia Charlotte Sophia Stewart-Mackenzie Marchoness Tweedale (age 27) were married. The difference in their ages was 21 years. He the son of [his father-in-law] George Hay 8th Marquess Tweedale (age 86) and [his mother-in-law] Susan Montagu Marchioness Teviotdale.

On 10th October 1876 [his father-in-law] George Hay 8th Marquess Tweedale (age 89) died. His son [his brother-in-law] Arthur (age 51) succeeded 9th Marquess Teviotdale. Julia Charlotte Sophia Stewart-Mackenzie Marchoness Tweedale (age 30) by marriage Marchioness Teviotdale.

On 29th December 1878 [his brother-in-law] Arthur Hay 9th Marquess Tweedale (age 54) died without issue. His brother [his brother-in-law] William (age 52) succeeded 10th Marquess Teviotdale.

On 13th August 1884 Arthur Wellesley 2nd Duke Wellington (age 77) died. His nephew Henry (age 38) succeeded 3rd Duke Wellington, 7th Earl Mornington, 7th Viscount Wellesley of Dangan Castle, 3rd Viscount Wellington of Talavera. Evelyn Katrine Gwenfra Williams Duchess Wellington (age 29) by marriage Duchess Wellington.

On 13th August 1904 [his former wife] Elizabeth Hay Duchess Wellington (age 83) died.
