Biography of Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough 1679-1758

Before 1679 [his father] William Ponsonby 1st Viscount Duncannon (age 19) and [his mother] Mary Moore were married.

In 1679 Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough was born to William Ponsonby 1st Viscount Duncannon (age 20) and Mary Moore.

Before 1704 Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough (age 24) and Sarah Margetson (age 25) were married. They were second cousins.

In 1704 [his son] William Ponsonby 2nd Earl Bessborough was born to Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough (age 25) and [his wife] Sarah Margetson (age 25).

On 29th March 1713 [his son] John Ponsonby was born to Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough (age 34) and [his wife] Sarah Margetson (age 35).

On 26th May 1713 [his mother] Mary Moore died.

On 17th November 1724 [his father] William Ponsonby 1st Viscount Duncannon (age 65) died. His son Brabazon (age 45) succeeded 2nd Viscount Duncannon of Duncannon in Wexford, 2nd Baron Bessborough of Bessborough in Kilkenny.

In 1727 [his son-in-law] Edward Moore 5th Earl Drogheda (age 26) and [his daughter] Sarah Ponsonby were married. She the daughter of Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough (age 48) and [his wife] Sarah Margetson (age 48). They were third cousins.

In May 1733 [his wife] Sarah Margetson (age 55) died.

On 19th January 1737. Or 1736. [his daughter] Sarah Ponsonby died.

In 1738 Jean Etienne Liotard (age 35) accompanied Lord Duncannon (age 59) to Constantinople, where he worked for the next four years.

In 1739 Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough (age 60) was created 1st Earl Bessborough.

All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

His younger brother [his son] John Ponsonby (age 26) would marry her younger sister [his future daughter-in-law] Elizabeth Cavendish (age 13) four years later. She the daughter of William Cavendish 3rd Duke Devonshire (age 40) and Catherine Hoskins Duchess Devonshire (age 40). He the son of Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough (age 60) and [his former wife] Sarah Margetson.

In 1743 [his son] John Ponsonby (age 29) and [his daughter-in-law] Elizabeth Cavendish (age 17) were married. His elder brother [his son] William Ponsonby 2nd Earl Bessborough (age 39) had married her elder sister [his daughter-in-law] Caroline Cavendish Countess Bessborough (age 23) four years before. She the daughter of William Cavendish 3rd Duke Devonshire (age 44) and Catherine Hoskins Duchess Devonshire (age 44). He the son of Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough (age 64) and [his former wife] Sarah Margetson.

On 4th July 1758 Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough (age 79) died. His son [his son] William (age 54) succeeded 2nd Earl Bessborough, 3rd Viscount Duncannon of Duncannon in Wexford, 3rd Baron Bessborough of Bessborough in Kilkenny. [his daughter-in-law] Caroline Cavendish Countess Bessborough (age 39) by marriage Countess Bessborough.

[his daughter] Sarah Ponsonby was born to Brabazon Ponsonby 1st Earl Bessborough and Sarah Margetson.
