Biography of Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan 1735-1799

Paternal Family Tree: Bingham

In 1730 [his father] John Bingham 5th Baronet [aged 40] and [his mother] Anne Vesey Lady Bingham [aged 30] were married. She by marriage Lady Bingham of Castlebar in County Mayo.

On 22nd September 1735 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan was born to [his father] John Bingham 5th Baronet [aged 45] and [his mother] Anne Vesey Lady Bingham [aged 36].

On 21st September 1749 [his father] John Bingham 5th Baronet [aged 59] died. His son [his brother] John [aged 20] succeeded 6th Baronet Bingham of Castlebar in County Mayo.

On 27th November 1750 John Bingham 6th Baronet [aged 22] died unmarried. His brother Charles [aged 15] succeeded 7th Baronet Bingham of Castlebar in County Mayo.

In 1756 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 20] was appointed High Sheriff of Mayo.

In 1761 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 25] was elected MP Mayo.

In February 1761 [his mother] Anne Vesey Lady Bingham [aged 61] died.

William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

Before 1762 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 26] and Margaret Smith Countess Lucan [aged 21] were married at Bath, Somerset [Map]. She by marriage Lady Bingham of Castlebar in County Mayo.

In 1762 [his daughter] Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer was born to Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 26] and [his wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan [aged 22]. She married 6th March 1781 George John Spencer 2nd Earl Spencer, son of John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer, and had issue.

On 4th December 1764 [his son] Richard Bingham 2nd Earl Lucan was born to Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 29] and [his wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan [aged 24]. He married 26th May 1794 Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk, daughter of Henry Belasyse 2nd Earl Fauconberg and Charlotte Lamb Countess Fauconberg, and had issue.

In 1776 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 40] was created 1st Baron Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo. [his wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan [aged 36] by marriage Baroness Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo.

On 6th March 1781 [his son-in-law] George John Spencer 2nd Earl Spencer [aged 22] and Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer [aged 19] were married. She the daughter of Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 45] and Margaret Smith Countess Lucan [aged 41]. He the son of John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 46] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 43].

In 1782 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 46] was elected MP Northampton.

On 26th May 1794 Richard Bingham 2nd Earl Lucan [aged 29] and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 24] were married. She the daughter of Henry Belasyse 2nd Earl Fauconberg [aged 52] and Charlotte Lamb Countess Fauconberg. He the son of Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 58] and Margaret Smith Countess Lucan [aged 54].

In 1795 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 59] was created 1st Earl Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo. [his wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan [aged 55] by marriage Countess Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo.

On 29th March 1799 Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 63] died. His son Richard [aged 34] succeeded 2nd Earl Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo, 2nd Baron Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo, 8th Baronet Bingham of Castlebar in County Mayo. Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 29] by marriage Countess Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo.

On 27th February 1814 [his former wife] Margaret Smith Countess Lucan [aged 74] died at St James's Palace [Map].

[his daughter] Margaret Bingham was born to Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan and Margaret Smith Countess Lucan. She married Thomas Lindsey and had issue.

[his daughter] Anne Bingham was born to Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan and Margaret Smith Countess Lucan.
