Biography of Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey 1729-1807

Paternal Family Tree: Grey

In or before 1722 [his father] Henry Grey 1st Baronet (age 30) and [his mother] Hannah Wood were married.

On or before 23rd October 1729 Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey was born to Henry Grey 1st Baronet (age 37) and Hannah Wood at Howick Hall, Northumberland [Map]. He was baptised on 23rd October 1729.

Around May 1749 [his father] Henry Grey 1st Baronet (age 57) died. His son [his brother] Henry (age 27) succeeded 2nd Baronet Grey of Howick in Northumberland.

In 1762 Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 32) and Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 18) were married.

On 13th March 1764 [his son] Charles Grey 2nd Earl Grey was born to Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 34) and [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 20).

In 1766 [his son] Henry George Grey was born to Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 36) and [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 22).

On 10th October 1767 [his son] George Grey 1st Baronet was born to Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 37) and [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 23) at Fallodon Hall, Northumberland [Map].

In 1777 [his son] Lieutenant-Colonel William Grey was born to Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 47) and [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 33).

On 25th May 1782 [his son] Bishop Edward Grey was born to Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 52) and [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 38).

In 1785 [his daughter] Hannah Althea Grey was born to Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 55) and [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 41).

On 26th December 1787 [his son-in-law] Samuel Charles Whitbread (age 23) and [his daughter] Elizabeth Grey were married. See Marriage of Two Sets of Siblings. She the daughter of Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 58) and [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 43).

On 20th February 1792 [his granddaughter] Eliza Courtenay was born illegitimately to [his son] Charles Grey 2nd Earl Grey (age 27) and Georgiana Spencer Duchess Devonshire (age 34) at Aix en Provence whilst she, Georgiana Spencer Duchess Devonshire was married to William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire (age 44). The Duchess was forced to relinquish the child shortly after her birth, to be raised by Charles Grey's parents, Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 62) and [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 48). The surname Courtenay was derived from her great-uncle, her maternal grandmother's brother, William Poyntz (age 57).

In 1793 HMS Boyne sailed for the West Indies carrying Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 63).

On 18th November 1794 [his son] Charles Grey 2nd Earl Grey (age 30) and [his daughter-in-law] Mary Elizabeth Ponsonby Countess Grey (age 18) were married. She the daughter of William Ponsonby 1st Baron Ponsonby of Imokilly in County Cork (age 50) and Louisa Molesworth Countess Fitzwilliam (age 45). He the son of Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 65) and [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 50).

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." The King has been pleased to grant the Dignity of a Baron of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, unto the Right Honorable General Sir Charles Grey (age 71), KB aud the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten, by the Name, Stile, and Title of Baron Grey, of Howick, in the County of Northumberland.

On 7th May 1805 [his son] Lieutenant-Colonel William Grey (age 28) and [his daughter-in-law] Maria Shirreff (age 23) were married. He the son of Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 75) and [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 61).

The King has been pleased to grant the Dignity of an Earl of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland to the Right Honorable Horatio Baron Walpole (age 82), and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten, by the Name, Stile, and Title of Earl of Orford, in the County of Suffolk.

The King has been pleased to grant the Dignities of Viscount and Earl of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and Ireland to the Right Honorable Charles Lord Grey (age 76), of Howick; Knight of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath, and General of His Majesty's Forces, and the Heirs Male of his Body lawfully begotten, by the Names, Stile, and Titles of Viscount Howick, in the County of Northumberland, and Earl Grey. [Note. [his wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 62) by marriage Countess Grey.]

On 14th November 1807 Charles Grey 1st Earl Grey (age 78) died. His son [his son] Charles (age 43) succeeded 2nd Earl Grey, 2nd Viscount Grey of Howick in Northumberland, 2nd Baron Grey of Howick in Northumberland. In 1822 [his former wife] Elizabeth Grey Countess Grey (age 78) died.
