Biography of Dean Edward Townshend 1719-1765

Paternal Family Tree: Townshend

Before 11th May 1711 [his father] Charles Townshend 2nd Viscount Townsend (age 37) and Elizabeth Pelham Viscountess Townsend were married. She by marriage Viscountess Townsend.

Before 25th July 1713 [his father] Charles Townshend 2nd Viscount Townsend (age 39) and [his mother] Dorothy Walpole Viscountess Townsend (age 26) were married. She by marriage Viscountess Townsend.

On 25th October 1719 Dean Edward Townshend was born to Charles Townshend 2nd Viscount Townsend (age 45) and Dorothy Walpole Viscountess Townsend (age 33).

On 29th March 1726 [his mother] Dorothy Walpole Viscountess Townsend (age 39) died although the circumstances are somewhat mysterious; possibly smallpox.

On 21st June 1738 [his father] Charles Townshend 2nd Viscount Townsend (age 64) died. His son [his half-brother] Charles (age 37) succeeded 3rd Viscount Townsend, 3rd Baron Townshend of Lynn Regis in Norfolk, 5th Baronet Townshend.

In 1743 Dean Edward Townshend (age 23) was ordained.

In 1745 Dean Edward Townshend (age 25) became Rector of St Mary's Church, Pulham St Mary.

In 1746 Dean Edward Townshend (age 26) was appointed Deputy Clerk of the Closet.

In 1748 Dean Edward Townshend (age 28) became Rector of Church of St Nicholas, Oakley.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

In 1761 Dean Edward Townshend (age 41) was appointed Dean of Norwich.
