Biography of Edward Smith-Stanley 13th Earl of Derby 1775-1851

On 23rd June 1774 [his father] Edward Smith-Stanley 12th Earl of Derby (age 21) and [his mother] Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Derby (age 21) were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] James Hamilton 6th Duke Hamilton 3rd Duke Brandon and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Gunning Duchess Hamilton and Argyll (age 40).

On 21st April 1775 Edward Smith-Stanley 13th Earl of Derby was born to [his father] Edward Smith-Stanley 12th Earl of Derby (age 22) and [his mother] Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Derby (age 22).

In 1776 [his father] Edward Smith-Stanley 12th Earl of Derby (age 23) was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire.

On 22nd February 1776 Edward Stanley 11th Earl of Derby (age 86) died. His grandson [his father] Edward (age 23) succeeded 12th Earl Derby, 6th Baronet Stanley of Bickerstaffe. [his mother] Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Derby (age 23) by marriage Countess Derby.

On 14th March 1797 [his mother] Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Derby (age 44) died of tuberculosis.

On 1st May 1797 [his father] Edward Smith-Stanley 12th Earl of Derby (age 44) and [his step-mother] Elizabeth Farren Countess Derby (age 38) were married. She by marriage Countess Derby. The marriage taking place six weeks after the death of his estranged wife [his mother] Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Derby.

On 30th June 1798 Edward Smith-Stanley 13th Earl of Derby (age 23) and Charlotte Margaret Hornby Countess Derby were married. He the son of Edward Smith-Stanley 12th Earl of Derby (age 45) and Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Derby.

On 29th March 1799 [his son] Edward Smith-Stanley 14th Earl of Derby was born to Edward Smith-Stanley 13th Earl of Derby (age 23) and [his wife] Charlotte Margaret Hornby Countess Derby. He married 31st May 1825 Emma Caroline Bootle-Wilbraham Countess Derby, daughter of Edward Bootle-Wilbraham 1st Baron Skelmersdale, and had issue.

On 29th November 1821 [his brother-in-law] Thomas Grosvenor 2nd Earl Wilton (age 21) and [his half-sister] Mary Smith-Stanley Countess Wilton (age 20) were married. She by marriage Countess Wilton. She the daughter of [his father] Edward Smith-Stanley 12th Earl of Derby (age 68) and [his step-mother] Elizabeth Farren Countess Derby (age 62). He the son of Robert Grosvenor 1st Marquess Westminster (age 54) and Eleanor Egerton Marchioness Westminster (age 51).

On 31st May 1825 [his son] Edward Smith-Stanley 14th Earl of Derby (age 26) and [his daughter-in-law] Emma Caroline Bootle-Wilbraham Countess Derby (age 20) were married. She by marriage Countess Derby. He the son of Edward Smith-Stanley 13th Earl of Derby (age 50) and [his wife] Charlotte Margaret Hornby Countess Derby.

On 21st October 1834 [his father] Edward Smith-Stanley 12th Earl of Derby (age 81) died. His son Edward (age 59) succeeded 13th Earl Derby, 7th Baronet Stanley of Bickerstaffe. [his wife] Charlotte Margaret Hornby Countess Derby by marriage Countess Derby.

In 1839 Edward Smith-Stanley 13th Earl of Derby (age 63) was appointed 683rd Knight of the Garter by Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom (age 19).

On 30th June 1851 Edward Smith-Stanley 13th Earl of Derby (age 76) died. His son Edward (age 52) succeeded 14th Earl Derby, 8th Baronet Stanley of Bickerstaffe.
