Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

In 1770 Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk was born to [her father] Henry Belasyse 2nd Earl Fauconberg [aged 27] and [her mother] Charlotte Lamb Countess Fauconberg [aged 27].
On 8th February 1774 [her grandfather] Thomas Belasyse 1st Earl Fauconberg [aged 74] died. His son [her father] Henry [aged 31] succeeded 2nd Earl Fauconberg, 5th Viscount Faunconberg, 6th Baronet Belasyse of Newborough.
On 23rd April 1789 Bernard Howard 12th Duke of Norfolk [aged 23] and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 19] were married. She the daughter of Henry Belasyse 2nd Earl Fauconberg [aged 47] and Charlotte Lamb Countess Fauconberg [aged 46].
In 1790 [her mother] Charlotte Lamb Countess Fauconberg [aged 47] died.
On 12th August 1791 [her son] Henry Charles Howard 13th Duke of Norfolk was born to [her husband] Bernard Howard 12th Duke of Norfolk [aged 25] and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 21]. He married before 1815 Charlotte Sophia Leveson-Gower Duchess Norfolk, daughter of George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland and Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland, and had issue.
On 26th May 1794 Richard Bingham 2nd Earl Lucan [aged 29] and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 24] were married. She the daughter of Henry Belasyse 2nd Earl Fauconberg [aged 52] and Charlotte Lamb Countess Fauconberg. He the son of Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 58] and Margaret Smith Countess Lucan [aged 54].
On 1st March 1798 [her daughter] Louisa Bingham Countess Wemyss was born to [her husband] Richard Bingham 2nd Earl Lucan [aged 33] and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 28]. She married 22nd August 1817 Francis Charles Charteris 9th Earl of Wemyss, son of Francis Charteris 8th Earl of Wemyss Douglas 4th Earl March, and had issue.
The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

His son [her husband] Richard [aged 34] succeeded 2nd Earl Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo, 2nd Baron Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo, 8th Baronet Bingham of Castlebar in County Mayo. Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 29] by marriage Countess Lucan of Castlebar in Mayo.
On 16th April 1800 [her son] George Charles Bingham 3rd Earl Lucan was born to [her husband] Richard Bingham 2nd Earl Lucan [aged 35] and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 30]. He married 29th June 1829 Anne Brudenell Countess Lucan, daughter of Robert Brudenell 6th Earl Cardigan and Penelope Cooke Countess Cardigan, and had issue.
On 23rd March 1802 [her father] Henry Belasyse 2nd Earl Fauconberg [aged 59] died without male issue. Earl Fauconberg extinct. His second cousin Rowland [aged 52] succeeded 6th Viscount Faunconberg, 7th Baronet Belasyse of Newborough.
Before 1815 Henry Charles Howard 13th Duke of Norfolk [aged 23] and Charlotte Sophia Leveson-Gower Duchess Norfolk [aged 26] were married. She the daughter of George Granville Leveson-Gower 1st Duke Sutherland [aged 56] and Elizabeth Sutherland Duchess Sutherland 19th Countess Sutherland [aged 49]. He the son of Bernard Howard 12th Duke of Norfolk [aged 49] and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 44].
On 27th March 1815 [her son-in-law] George Harcourt [aged 29] and Elizabeth Bingham were married. She the daughter of Richard Bingham 2nd Earl Lucan [aged 50] and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 45]. He the son of Archbishop Edward Venables-Vernon-Harcourt [aged 57] and Anne Leveson-Gower [aged 54]. They were sixth cousins.
On 16th December 1815 Charles Howard 11th Duke of Norfolk [aged 69] died. His third cousin [her husband] Bernard [aged 50] succeeded 12th Duke Norfolk, 23rd or 30th Earl Arundel, 13th Earl Surrey, 10th Earl Norfolk, 20th Baron Maltravers, 20th Baron Arundel. Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 45] by marriage Duchess Norfolk.
On 22nd August 1817 [her son-in-law] Francis Charles Charteris 9th Earl of Wemyss [aged 21] and Louisa Bingham Countess Wemyss [aged 19] were married in Paris [Map]. She the daughter of Richard Bingham 2nd Earl Lucan [aged 52] and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 47]. He the son of Francis Charteris 8th Earl of Wemyss Douglas 4th Earl March [aged 45].
In 1819 Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk [aged 49] died.
Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke
Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

Charlotte Sophia Leveson-Gower Duchess Norfolk [aged 54] by marriage Duchess Norfolk.
[her daughter] Georgiana Bingham was born to Richard Bingham 2nd Earl Lucan and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk. She married 15th June 1821 Charles Nevill of Nevill Holt, Leicestershire and had issue.
[her daughter] Elizabeth Bingham was born to Richard Bingham 2nd Earl Lucan and Elizabeth Belasyse Duchess Norfolk. She married 27th March 1815 her sixth cousin George Harcourt, son of Archbishop Edward Venables-Vernon-Harcourt and Anne Leveson-Gower, and had issue.
