Biography of Field-Marshal Alan Brooke 1st Viscount Alanbrooke 1883-1963

On 28th July 1864 [his father] Victor Alexander Brooke 3rd Baronet (age 21) and [his mother] Alice Bellingham (age 20) were married.

On 23rd July 1883 Field-Marshal Alan Brooke 1st Viscount Alanbrooke was born to Victor Alexander Brooke 3rd Baronet (age 40) and Alice Bellingham (age 39).

On 23rd November 1891 [his father] Victor Alexander Brooke 3rd Baronet (age 48) died.

On 9th January 1920 [his son] Thomas Brooke 2nd Viscount Alanbrooke was born to Field-Marshal Alan Brooke 1st Viscount Alanbrooke (age 36).

On 27th July 1920 [his mother] Alice Bellingham (age 76) died.

In 1929 Field-Marshal Alan Brooke 1st Viscount Alanbrooke (age 45) and Benita Pelly (age 37) were married.

On 24th November 1932 [his son] Victor Brooke 3rd Viscount Alanbrooke was born to Field-Marshal Alan Brooke 1st Viscount Alanbrooke (age 49).

The London Gazette 37315. Whitehall, October 19, 1945. The King has been pleased, by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, bearing date the 19th ultimo, to confer the dignity of a Barony of the United Kingdom upon Field-Marshal Sir Alan Francls Brooke (age 62), G.C.B., D.S.O., and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style and title of Baron Alanbrooke, of Brookeborough in the County of Fermanagh.

In 1946 Field-Marshal Alan Brooke 1st Viscount Alanbrooke (age 62) was appointed 898th Knight of the Garter by King George VI of the United Kingdom (age 50).

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed."
