The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. On 3rd October 1755 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth was born to William Legge 2nd Earl Dartmouth (age 24) and Frances Catherine Gounter Nicoll Countess Dartmouth (age 22).
Around 1765 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 9) educated at Eton College [Map].
From 1770 to 1771 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 16) was educated at Harrow School. On 22nd October 1771 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth matriculated Christ Church College, Oxford University. He was awarded MA on 3rd July 1775, D.C.L. on 28th October 1778.
Between 1775 and 1778 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 19) undertook a Grand Tour. On 3rd February 1777 his father [his father] William Legge 2nd Earl Dartmouth (age 43) wrote to him: "I wish you to be home by the 14th or 15th of April, though if Parliament should be up as early as we suppose it will, you will not then be in time to take your seat in the House of Commons, of which there seems to me to be great probability that you will at that time be a member. Lord North has proposed to me a seat that you will not dislike and in a manner you will be pleased with, and if it should be vacated in two or three weeks as is likely the whole business will be over without giving you any other trouble than to make a visit to your constituents when you come home."

On 5th June 1778 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 22) was elected MP Plymouth which seat he held until 1780. He made his maiden speech 17th March 1779 against the bill for the relief of protestant dissenters.
On 12th March 1779 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 23) was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel of the Staffordshire Militia. He became Colonel in 1781. He resigned the command in 1783 when the regiment was disembodied at the end of the American War of Independence.
In 1780 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 24) was elected MP Horsham and MP Staffordshire. He chose to sit for the latter which he represented until 1784.
On 3rd May 1781 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 25) was admitted a Fellow of the Royal Society.

She the daughter of Heneage Finch 3rd Earl Aylesford and Charlotte Seymour Countess Aylesford (age 52). He the son of William Legge 2nd Earl Dartmouth (age 51) and Frances Catherine Gounter Nicoll Countess Dartmouth (age 49). They were second cousin once removed.
In 1783 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 27) was appointed Warden of the Stannaries which office he held until 1798.

On 29th November 1784 William Legge 4th Earl Dartmouth was born to George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 29) and Frances Finch Countess Dartmouth (age 23). He married (1) 5th April 1820 Frances Charlotte Chetwynd-Talbot Countess Dartmouth, daughter of Charles Chetwynd-Talbot 2nd Earl Talbot and Frances Thomasina Lambart Countess Talbot, and had issue (2) 25th October 1828 Frances Barrington Countess Dartmouth, daughter of George Barrington 5th Viscount Barrington and Elizabeth Adair Viscountess Barrington, and had issue.
On 20th February 1786 George Legge was born to George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 30) and Frances Finch Countess Dartmouth (age 25).
On 8th March 1787 Louisa Legge Baroness Bagot was born to George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 31) and Frances Finch Countess Dartmouth (age 26). She married 17th February 1807 William Bagot 2nd Baron Bagot, son of William Bagot 1st Baron Bagot and Elizabeth St John Baroness Bagot, and had issue.

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." In 15th June 1801 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 45) by writ of acceleration 4th Baron Dartmouth. His father died a month later when he succeeded to his other titles.
On 15th July 1801 [his father] William Legge 2nd Earl Dartmouth (age 70) died. His son George (age 45) succeeded 3rd Earl Dartmouth. [his wife] Frances Finch Countess Dartmouth (age 40) by marriage Countess Dartmouth. He took his seat in the Lords on 29th October 1801.

On 25th September 1803 Henry Legge was born to George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 47) and Frances Finch Countess Dartmouth (age 42). He married 12th May 1842 Marian Rogers, daughter of Frederick Rogers 7th Baronet.
On 14th May 1804 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 48) was appointed Lord Chamberlain.

The British Institution was founded in June 1805 by a group of private subscribers who met in the Thatched House Tavern in London. The founding "Hereditory Governors" included Sir George Beaumont (age 51), 7th Baronet and Charles Long, 1st Baron Farnborough. George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 49) was appointed the first President of the British Institution.
On 17th February 1807 [his son-in-law] William Bagot 2nd Baron Bagot (age 33) and [his daughter] Louisa Legge Baroness Bagot (age 19) were married. She by marriage Baroness Bagot of Bagot's Bromley in Staffordshire. She the daughter of George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 51) and [his wife] Frances Finch Countess Dartmouth (age 46). They were second cousin once removed.
On 10th November 1810 George Legge 3rd Earl Dartmouth (age 55) died in Cornwall. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Minories [Map] on 24th November 1810. His sonWilliam (age 25) succeeded 4th Earl Dartmouth, 5th Baron Dartmouth.
On 21st November 1838 [his former wife] Frances Finch Countess Dartmouth (age 77) died.
