Biography of Hugh Grandesmil 1032-1098

Hugh Grandesmil and Adelize Beaumont Oise were married. She the daughter of Ivo Beaumont Oise Count Beaumont sur l'Oise.

In 1032 Hugh Grandesmil was born to Robert Grandesmil and Hawisa Échauffour.

Around 1040 William Normandy and [his mother] Hawisa Échauffour were married. He the son of Robert Normandy Archbishop of Rouen and Herleva Countess Évreux.

In 1058 Hugh Grandesmil (age 26) was banished from court.

14th October 1066 Battle of Hastings

In 1068 Hugh Grandesmil (age 36) took by storm at Leicester, Leicestershire [Map].

Before 1078 [his son] Robert Grandesmil was born to Hugh Grandesmil (age 45) and Adelize Beaumont Oise. Date adjusted to from 1086 to be consistent with birth of son William in 1092.

A History of the County of Leicestershire: Volume 5 Gartree Hundred: Stonton Wyville. In 1086 STONTON WYVILLE formed part of the extensive estates of Hugh de Grentemesnil (age 54). About 1130 Richard Basset held it, probably as an under-tenant of the Earl of Leicester to whose descendants it later passed, ultimately becoming part of the Duchy of Lancaster. Ralph Basset seems to have made claim to Stonton in 1252, but nothing further is known of the Bassets' tenancy.

On 22nd February 1098 Hugh Grandesmil (age 66) died at Leicester, Leicestershire [Map]. He was buried in the Chapter House of the Abbey of Saint-Evroul.

Before 1100 Henry Ferrers was captured by Hugh Grandesmil.
