The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Biography of Humphrey Briggs 4th Baronet 1670-1734

In or before 1670 [his father] Humphrey Briggs 3rd Baronet (age 19) and [his mother] Barbara Wyndham (age 20) were married.

Around 1670 Humphrey Briggs 4th Baronet was born to Humphrey Briggs 3rd Baronet (age 20) and Barbara Wyndham (age 20).

On 2nd July 1687 Humphrey Briggs 4th Baronet (age 17) matriculated Wadham College, Oxford University.

In 1700 [his father] Humphrey Briggs 3rd Baronet (age 50) died. His son Humphrey (age 30) succeeded 4th Baronet Briggs of Haughton in Shropshire.

In February 1701 Humphrey Briggs 4th Baronet (age 31) was elected MP Shropshire. He was defeated for the seat in Nov 1701.

In July 1702 Humphrey Briggs 4th Baronet (age 32) was elected MP Bridgnorth unopposed. He was re-elected in 1705 and 1708. He was defeated in 1710.

On 13th July 1716 Humphrey Briggs 4th Baronet (age 46) was elected MP Much Wenlock at a by-election. He was returned in the 1722 General Election. He stood down in 1727.

On 8th December 1734 Humphrey Briggs 4th Baronet (age 64) died unmarried. His brother [his brother] Hugh (age 50) succeeded 5th Baronet Briggs of Haughton in Shropshire.
