The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Before 1600 [his father] Thomas Culpepper (age 38) and [his mother] Anne Slaney were married.

Around 1600 John Culpepper 1st Baron Culpeper was born to Thomas Culpepper (age 39) and Anne Slaney.

In 1613 [his father] Thomas Culpepper (age 52) died.

On 29th October 1628 John Culpepper 1st Baron Culpeper (age 28) and Philippa Snelling were married.

Around 1629 [his son] Alexander Culpepper was born to John Culpepper 1st Baron Culpeper (age 29) and [his wife] Philippa Snelling.

Before 16th September 1630 [his wife] Philippa Snelling died. She was buried on 16th September 1630 at Hollingbourne, Kent.

After 16th September 1630 John Culpepper 1st Baron Culpeper (age 30) and Judith Culpeper (age 24) were married. They were second cousins.

In April 1632 [his daughter] Elizabeth Culpepper was born to John Culpepper 1st Baron Culpeper (age 32) and [his wife] Judith Culpeper (age 26).

On 21st March 1635 [his son] Thomas Culpepper 2nd Baron Culpepper was born to John Culpepper 1st Baron Culpeper (age 35) and [his wife] Judith Culpeper (age 29) in Hollingbourne, Kent.

In 1640 [his son] John Colepeper 3rd Baron Culpepper was born to John Culpepper 1st Baron Culpeper (age 40) and [his wife] Judith Culpeper (age 34).

In 1642 [his son] Cheney Colepeper 4th Baron Culpepper was born to John Culpepper 1st Baron Culpeper (age 42) and [his wife] Judith Culpeper (age 36).

On 21st October 1644 John Culpepper 1st Baron Culpeper (age 44) was created 1st Baron Culpeper of Thoresway in Lincolnshire.

On 2nd March 1648 [his son] Alexander Culpepper (age 19) died without issue.

On 2nd March 1648 [his son] Alexander Culpepper (age 19) and [his daughter-in-law] Catherine Anna Ford (age 13) were married.

In 1653 [his wife] Judith Culpeper (age 47) died.

Samuel Pepys' Diary. 6th June 1660. My letters tell me, that Mr. Calamy¹ had preached before the King in a surplice (this I heard afterwards to be false); that my Lord, Gen. Monk (age 51), and three more Lords, are made Commissioners for the Treasury²; that my Lord had some great place conferred on him, and they say Master of the Wardrobe³; that the two Dukes [Duke of York and Duke of Gloucester.] do haunt the Park much, and that they were at a play, Madam Epicene,-["Epicene, or the Silent Woman", a comedy, by Ben Jonson.] the other day; that Sir. Ant. Cooper (age 38), Mr. Hollis (age 60), and Mr. Annesly (age 45), & late President of the Council of State, are made Privy Councillors to the King. At night very busy sending Mr. Donne away to London, and wrote to my father for a coat to be made me against I come to London, which I think will not be long. At night Mr. Edward Montagu came on board and staid long up with my Lord. I to bed and about one in the morning,

Note 1. Edmund Calamy, D.D., the celebrated Nonconformist divine, born February, 1600, appointed Chaplain to Charles II., 1660. He refused the bishopric of Lichfield which was offered to him. Died October 29th, 1666.

Note 2. The names of the Commissioners were Sir Edward Hyde (age 51), afterwards Earl of Clarendon, General Monk, Thomas, Earl of Southampton (age 53), John, Lord Robartes (age 54), Thomas, Lord Colepeper (age 60), Sir Edward Montagu, with Sir Edward Nicholas (age 67) and Sir William Morrice (age 57) as principal Secretaries of State. The patents are dated June 19th, 1660.

Note 3. The duty of the Master of the Wardrobe was to provide "proper furniture for coronations, marriages, and funerals" of the sovereign and royal family, "cloaths of state, beds, hangings, and other necessaries for the houses of foreign ambassadors, cloaths of state for Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Prince of Wales, and ambassadors abroad", as also to provide robes for Ministers of State, Knights of the Garter, &c. The last Master of the Wardrobe was Ralph, Duke of Montague (age 21), who died 1709.

On 11th June 1660 John Culpepper 1st Baron Culpeper (age 60) died. His son [his son] Thomas (age 25) succeeded 2nd Baron Culpeper of Thoresway in Lincolnshire.
