Biography of Robert Greville 4th Baron Brooke 1639-1677

Paternal Family Tree: Greville

Maternal Family Tree: Anne Windsor 1466-1500

Before 1638 [his father] Robert Greville 2nd Baron Brooke (age 30) and [his mother] Catherine Russell Baroness Brooke were married. She by marriage Baroness Brooke of Beauchamps Court in Warwickshire. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Francis Russell 4th Earl Bedford (age 44) and [his grandmother] Catherine Brydges Countess Bedford (age 57). They were half sixth cousins.

On 4th January 1639 Robert Greville 4th Baron Brooke was born to Robert Greville 2nd Baron Brooke (age 31) and Catherine Russell Baroness Brooke.

On 24th January 1639 Robert Greville 4th Baron Brooke was baptised at Warwick, Warwickshire [Map].

On 2nd March 1643 [his father] Robert Greville 2nd Baron Brooke (age 35) died. His son [his brother] Francis succeeded 3rd Baron Brooke of Beauchamps Court in Warwickshire.

John Evelyn's Diary. 3rd August 1654. We passed next through Warwick [Map], and saw the castle [Map], the dwelling house of the Lord Brook (age 15), and the furniture noble. It is built on an eminent rock which gives prospect into a most goodly green, a woody and plentifully watered country; the river running so delightfully under it, that it may pass for one of the most surprising seats one should meet with. The gardens are prettily disposed; but might be much improved. Here they showed us Sir Guy's great two-handed sword, staff, horse-arms, pot, and other relics of that famous knight-errant. Warwick is a fair old town, and hath one church full of ancient. Monuments.

In November 1658 [his brother] Francis Greville 3rd Baron Brooke died unmarried. His brother Robert (age 19) succeeded 4th Baron Brooke of Beauchamps Court in Warwickshire.

On 1st October 1660 Robert Greville 4th Baron Brooke (age 21) and Ann Dodington Baroness Brooke (age 18) were married. She by marriage Baroness Brooke of Beauchamps Court in Warwickshire.

Samuel Pepys' Diary. 25th June 1666. At noon, without staying to eat my dinner, I down by water to Deptford, Kent [Map], and there coming find Sir W. Batten (age 65) and Sir Jeremy Smith (whom the dispatch of the Loyall London detained) at dinner at Greenwich at the Beare Taverne, and thither I to them and there dined with them. Very good company of strangers there was, but I took no great pleasure among them, being desirous to be back again. So got them to rise as soon as I could, having told them the newes Sir W. Coventry (age 38) just now wrote me to tell them, which is, that the Dutch are certainly come out. I did much business at Deptford, Kent [Map], and so home, by an old poor man, a sculler, having no oares to be got, and all this day on the water entertained myself with the play of Commenius, and being come home did go out to Aldgate, there to be overtaken by Mrs. Margot Pen (age 15) in her father's coach, and my wife and Mercer with her, and Mrs. Pen carried us to two gardens at Hackny, (which I every day grow more and more in love with,) Mr. Drake's one, where the garden is good, and house and the prospect admirable; the other my Lord Brooke's (age 27), where the gardens are much better, but the house not so good, nor the prospect good at all. But the gardens are excellent; and here I first saw oranges grow: some green, some half, some a quarter, and some full ripe, on the same tree, and one fruit of the same tree do come a year or two after the other. I pulled off a little one by stealth (the man being mighty curious of them) and eat it, and it was just as other little green small oranges are; as big as half the end of my little finger. Here were also great variety of other exotique plants, and several labarinths, and a pretty aviary. Having done there with very great pleasure we away back again, and called at the Taverne in Hackny by the church, and there drank and eate, and so in the Goole of the evening home. This being the first day of my putting on my black stuff bombazin suit, and I hope to feel no inconvenience by it, the weather being extremely hot.

All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.
