The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Around 1225 [his daughter] Margaret Somery Baroness Basset Drayton was born to Roger Somery 2nd Baron Dudley (age 35) and [his future wife] Nicole D'Aubigny Baroness Dudley (age 15) in Dudley, Worcestershire.
Around 1227 [his daughter] Mabel Somery was born to Roger Somery 2nd Baron Dudley (age 37) and [his future wife] Amabilia Chaucombe Baroness Dudley at Dudley, Staffordshire.
In 1232 [his daughter] Joan Somery was born to Roger Somery 2nd Baron Dudley (age 42) and [his future wife] Nicole D'Aubigny Baroness Dudley (age 22) at Dudley, Staffordshire.
In or before 1237 [his daughter] Matilda Somery was born to Roger Somery 2nd Baron Dudley (age 46) and [his future wife] Nicole D'Aubigny Baroness Dudley (age 26).
Before 1240 Roger Somery 2nd Baron Dudley (age 49) and Nicole D'Aubigny Baroness Dudley (age 29) were married. She by marriage Baroness Dudley of Somery. The difference in their ages was 20 years. She the daughter of William D'Aubigny 3rd Earl Lincoln 3rd Earl of Arundel and Mabel Gernon Countess Lincoln and Arundel.
Around 1240 [his wife] Nicole D'Aubigny Baroness Dudley (age 30) died at Dudley Castle [Map].
After 1240 Roger Somery 2nd Baron Dudley (age 50) and Amabilia Chaucombe Baroness Dudley were married. She by marriage Baroness Dudley of Somery.
In 1250 [his son] John Somery was born to Roger Somery 2nd Baron Dudley (age 60) and [his wife] Amabilia Chaucombe Baroness Dudley at Dudley, Staffordshire.
On 24th June 1255 [his son] Roger Somery 3rd Baron Dudley was born to Roger Somery 2nd Baron Dudley (age 65) and [his wife] Amabilia Chaucombe Baroness Dudley at Dinas Powys.
In 1262 Roger Somery 2nd Baron Dudley (age 72) rebuilt Dudley Castle [Map].
On 31st October 1266 the Dictum of Kenilworth was issued. The Dictum was a peace agreement between King Henry III of England (age 59) and the rebels who were besieged in the impregnable Kenilworth Castle [Map]. The committee included:

Robert Ferrers 6th Earl of Derby (age 27) and Henry Hastings (age 31) were fined seven times their annual income. The Dictum, however, required the rebels to pay their fines before being restored to their lands; something of a Catch-22 since if they weren't restored to their lands, they would have no income to pay the fine.
