Biography of Stafford Henry Northcote 1st Earl Iddesleigh 1818-1887

Paternal Family Tree: Northcote

On 27th October 1818 Stafford Henry Northcote 1st Earl Iddesleigh was born to [his father] Henry Stafford Northcote (age 26) at 23 Portland Place, Marylebone.

In 1843 Stafford Henry Northcote 1st Earl Iddesleigh (age 24) and Cecilia Frances Farrer Countess Iddesleigh were married. They had seven sons and three daughters.

On 7th August 1845 [his son] Walter Stafford Northcote 2nd Earl Iddesleigh was born to Stafford Henry Northcote 1st Earl Iddesleigh (age 26) and [his wife] Cecilia Frances Farrer Countess Iddesleigh. He married 23rd September 1868 Elizabeth Lucy Meysey-Thompson, daughter of Harry Meysey-Thompson 1st Baronet, and had issue.

On 18th November 1846 [his son] Henry Northcote 1st Baron Northcote was born to Stafford Henry Northcote 1st Earl Iddesleigh (age 28) and [his wife] Cecilia Frances Farrer Countess Iddesleigh.

On 3rd January 1850 [his son] Reverend John Stafford Northcote was born to Stafford Henry Northcote 1st Earl Iddesleigh (age 31) and [his wife] Cecilia Frances Farrer Countess Iddesleigh.

On 22nd February 1850 [his father] Henry Stafford Northcote (age 57) died.

On 17th March 1851 [his grandfather] Stafford Henry Northcote 7th Baronet (age 88) died. His grandson Stafford (age 32) succeeded 8th Baronet Northcote of Hayne in Devon.

On 23rd September 1868 [his son] Walter Stafford Northcote 2nd Earl Iddesleigh (age 23) and [his daughter-in-law] Elizabeth Lucy Meysey-Thompson (age 24) were married. He the son of Stafford Henry Northcote 1st Earl Iddesleigh (age 49) and [his wife] Cecilia Frances Farrer Countess Iddesleigh.

In 1875 Stafford Henry Northcote 1st Earl Iddesleigh (age 56) was elected Fellow of the Royal Society.

In 1881 Stafford Henry Northcote 1st Earl Iddesleigh (age 62) was living at 30 St James' Place, Westminster; Census.

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

The Queen (age 66) has been pleased to direct Letters Patent to be passed under the Great Seal, granting the dignities of a Viscount and an Earl of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland unto the Right Honourable Sir Stafford Henry Northcote (age 66), Bart, GCB, and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the names, styles, and titles of Viscount Saint Gyres, of Newton Saint Gyres, in the county of Devon, and Earl of Iddesleigh, in the said county.

On 12th January 1887 Stafford Henry Northcote 1st Earl Iddesleigh (age 68) died at 10 Downing Street, Westminster [Map]. His son Walter (age 41) succeeded 2nd Earl of Iddesleigh in Devon, 2nd Viscount St Gyres of Newton St Gyres in Devon, 9th Baronet Northcote of Hayne in Devon

In 1910 [his former wife] Cecilia Frances Farrer Countess Iddesleigh died.
