Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

On 15th October 1857 Wilbraham Egerton 1st Earl Egerton (age 25) and Mary Amherst Baroness Egerton (age 20) were married. She the daughter of William Amherst 2nd Earl Amherst (age 52) and Gertrude Percy Countess Amherst (age 43).
In 1859 [his father] Wilbraham Egerton 1st Baron Egerton Tatton (age 52) was created 1st Baron Egerton Tatton. [his mother] Charlotte Elizabeth Loftus Baroness Egerton Tatton by marriage Baroness Egerton Tatton.
In 1861 [his daughter] Gertrude Egerton Countess Albemarle was born to Wilbraham Egerton 1st Earl Egerton (age 28) and [his wife] Mary Amherst Baroness Egerton (age 23). She married 1881 Arnold Keppel 8th Earl Albermarle, son of William Keppel 7th Earl Albermarle and Sophia Mary MacNab of Dundurn Castle, and had issue.
On 27th August 1862 [his brother-in-law] William Archer Amherst 3rd Earl Amherst (age 26) and Julia Mann Countess Amherst were married at Linton, Kent [Map]. She the daughter of James Mann 5th Earl Cornwallis. He the son of [his father-in-law] William Amherst 2nd Earl Amherst (age 56) and [his mother-in-law] Gertrude Percy Countess Amherst (age 47).
In 1867 [his brother] Alan Egerton 3rd Baron Egerton Tatton (age 21) and [his sister-in-law] Anna Louisa Taylor Baroness Egerton (age 16) were married.
In 1881 [his son-in-law] Arnold Keppel 8th Earl Albermarle (age 22) and [his daughter] Gertrude Egerton Countess Albemarle (age 20) were married. She the daughter of Wilbraham Egerton 1st Earl Egerton (age 48) and [his wife] Mary Amherst Baroness Egerton (age 43). The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

In 1885 Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (age 61) and [his future wife] Alice Graham-Montgomery Duchess Buckingham and Chandos (age 38) were married. She by marriage Duchess of Buckingham and Chandos. The difference in their ages was 23 years. He the son of Richard Temple-Nugent-Brydges-Chandos-Grenville 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos and Mary Campbell Duchess Buckingham and Chandos.
On 26th March 1886 [his father-in-law] William Amherst 2nd Earl Amherst (age 80) died at Montreal Park, Sevenoaks. His son [his brother-in-law] William (age 50) succeeded 3rd Earl Amherst, 4th Baron Amherst of Montreal in Kent. Julia Mann Countess Amherst by marriage Countess Amherst.
On 17th December 1892 [his wife] Mary Amherst Baroness Egerton (age 55) died.
On 8th August 1894 Wilbraham Egerton 1st Earl Egerton (age 62) and Alice Graham-Montgomery Duchess Buckingham and Chandos (age 47) were married.
In 1897 Wilbraham Egerton 1st Earl Egerton (age 64) was created 1st Earl Egerton. [his wife] Alice Graham-Montgomery Duchess Buckingham and Chandos (age 50) by marriage Countess Egerton.

On 28th March 1902 William Stephen Temple Gore-Langton 4th Earl Temple (age 54) died at Cairo, Egypt to where he had travelled with his wife [his sister-in-law] Helen for his health. His son Algernon (age 30) succeeded 5th Earl Temple of Stowe.
On 16th March 1909 Wilbraham Egerton 1st Earl Egerton (age 77) died. Earl Egerton extinct. His brother [his brother] Alan (age 63) succeeded 3rd Baron Egerton Tatton. [his sister-in-law] Anna Louisa Taylor Baroness Egerton (age 58) by marriage Baroness Egerton Tatton.
In 1931 [his former wife] Alice Graham-Montgomery Duchess Buckingham and Chandos (age 84) died.
