All About History Books

The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

Biography of Wilfrid Lawson 2nd Baronet 1664-1704

Paternal Family Tree: Lawson of Isel Hall in Cumbria

On 31st October 1664 Wilfrid Lawson 2nd Baronet was born to William Lawson and Milcah Strickland.

On 13th December 1688 [his grandfather] Wilfrid Lawson 1st Baronet (age 78) died. His grandson Wilfrid (age 24) succeeded 2nd Baronet Lawson of Isel Hall in Cumbria. He was buried at St Michael's Church, Isel where his memorial has the inscription: "Here lies Sir Wilfrid Lawson, baronet, and his [his grandmother] Lady Jane. He departed this life 13th day of December 1688 aged 79 And she the 8th June 1677 aged 65. Having married four sons and eight daughters. Vivit post funers virtue [He lives after the funeral by virtue].

In or before 1697 Wilfrid Lawson 2nd Baronet (age 32) and Elizabeth Preston were married. They had three sons; Wilfrid, William who died a bachelor; and John, an army officer, accidentally killed during a review at Dublin, when struck by a ball aimed towards a fellow officer. Their eldest daughter Elizabeth also met an unfortunate death, falling from a horse whilst riding in the park at Castle Howard, Yorkshire. Reports suggest that she lost her life owing to an over-excess of modesty. For as her servant tried to disentangle her petticoat from the saddle she screamed, frightening the horse, which kicked her.

In 1697 [his son] Wilfrid Lawson 3rd Baronet was born to Wilfrid Lawson 2nd Baronet (age 32) and [his wife] Elizabeth Preston.
