Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

On 20th January 1770 William Stephen Poyntz was born to [his father] William Poyntz [aged 35].

On 1st September 1794 William Stephen Poyntz [aged 24] and Elizabeth Mary Browne [aged 26] were married.

On 27th March 1799 [his daughter] Elizabeth Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer was born to William Stephen Poyntz [aged 29] and [his wife] Elizabeth Mary Browne [aged 31]. She married 23rd February 1830 her second cousin Frederick Spencer 4th Earl Spencer, son of George John Spencer 2nd Earl Spencer and Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer, and had issue.

In June 1800 William Stephen Poyntz [aged 30] was elected MP St Albans.

On 6th March 1803 [his daughter] Frances Isabella Selina Poyntz Marchioness of Exeter was born to William Stephen Poyntz [aged 33] and [his wife] Elizabeth Mary Browne [aged 35]. She married (1) 12th May 1824 Brownlow Cecil 2nd Marquess Exeter, son of Henry Cecil 1st Marquess Exeter and Sarah Hoggins Countess Exeter, and had issue (2) July 1835 her third cousin Horace Beauchamp Seymour-Conway.

On 13th May 1809 [his father] William Poyntz [aged 75] died.

In April 1810 William Stephen Poyntz [aged 40] was elected MP Callington.

On 7th July 1815 two sons of William Stephen Poyntz [aged 45] and [his wife] Elizabeth Mary Browne [aged 47]drowned at Bognor Regis, West Sussex.

In February 1823 William Stephen Poyntz [aged 53] was elected MP Chichester.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.

On 12th May 1824 [his son-in-law] Brownlow Cecil 2nd Marquess Exeter [aged 28] and [his daughter] Frances Isabella Selina Poyntz Marchioness of Exeter [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Marchioness Exeter. He the son of Henry Cecil 1st Marquess Exeter and Sarah Hoggins Countess Exeter.

On 23rd February 1830 [his son-in-law] Frederick Spencer 4th Earl Spencer [aged 31] and [his daughter] Elizabeth Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 30] were married. He the son of George John Spencer 2nd Earl Spencer [aged 71] and Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer [aged 68]. They were second cousins.

On 30th December 1830 [his wife] Elizabeth Mary Browne [aged 63] died. Monument sculpted by Francis Leggatt Chantrey [aged 49] in St Mary's Church, Easebourne, Sussex [Map].

Elizabeth Mary Browne: On 5th December 1767 she was born to Anthony Joseph Browne 7th Viscount Montagu and Frances Falconer Mackworth Viscountess Montague. On 1st September 1794 William Stephen Poyntz and she were married. On 7th July 1815 two sons of William Stephen Poyntz and Elizabeth Mary Brownedrowned at Bognor Regis, West Sussex.

In March 1831 William Stephen Poyntz [aged 61] was elected MP Ashburton.

In 1835 William Stephen Poyntz [aged 64] was elected MP Midhurst.

In July 1835 [his son-in-law] Horace Beauchamp Seymour-Conway [aged 43] and [his daughter] Frances Isabella Selina Poyntz Marchioness of Exeter [aged 32] were married. They were third cousins. He a great x 3 grandson of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland.

Rafaelle Monti: In 1818 he was born in Milan. In 1881 he died.
